The latest revision of my Sigarda voltron. I've cut several cards to help compete with the decks I face in my local playgroups. Some cards never really work (eg. Exploration - not enough lands) and some just slow me down (eg. Solemn Simulacrum, Guildgate, etc.). A few cards I've never traded for (eg. Iona) so I haven't included them.

Usually my games go as follows:

  • Start off with some kind of basic ramp (hopefully a Sol Ring) so I can get Sigarda out by turn 3 or 4. Turn 5 Sigarda is pretty slow because by that stage people have counterspell or removal mana up or start building their combos.
  • If needed, tutor for more creature-based ramp or Silverblade Paladin for effective DPS. Ramping and tutoring help with cards such as Oracle of Mul Daya, which is nice.
  • Once Sigarda is safely out, start enchanting and equipping simple voltron spells. All of them give at least +2/+2 which make her a 2 turn clock.
  • Solidify your game with cards such as Grand Abolisher, Avacyn, Silence, Armageddon, etc. By that stage you should've hit a couple of people in the face and made some enemies.

Some effective ways to kill people:

Some cards that I've found to be pretty useful:

  • Verdant Embrace: buffs Sigarda AND gives me a LOT of chump blockers to fend off opponents once I start hitting them with an 8/8 flying hexproof angel.
  • Oblation: Target Sigarda in response to a wrath or target a now worthless mana rock and you get 2 cards that should be much better.
  • Silence: Give yourself a free turn by doing it in their upkeep or force a Cyclonic Rift before they do it when you play stuff.
  • Hydra Omnivore: When killing 1 player just isn't enough.

Some cards I've removed:

  • Solemn Simulacrum: Great value but turn 3 or 4 I'd rather cast Sigarda than ramp some more. Card draw is nice but not required.
  • Exploration: Often a dead card because I run out of lands.

Easy opponents:

  • Graveyard-based decks: I've included a lot of good graveyard removal to try to combat their graveyard abuse.
  • Token decks: I should be able to kill them before they have a reasonable force. Throw in some boardwipes for good measure.

Tough opponents:

  • Hyper aggro (eg. Aurelia): Basically it comes down to my opening hand and first few draws. If I don't get some decent ramp to start hitting with Sigarda, I've lost.
  • Control/Heavy Removal: What all voltron player fears.
