Playing Strategy: This deck is all about delaying until you have the combo pieces (Pili-Pala, Grand Architect, and Train of Thought). Use transmute, Peer From the Depths, and train of thought to dig. Play testing has shown that you can use the Drift of Phantasms as a blocker creature to stall as well (only do this if you already have Architect in hand or have 2 Phantasms). Play Pili-Pala a turn before you plan to combo off as it is subject to Rule 302.6 (must go through untap phase to activate Q ability); The next turn play the Architect and one blue mana to begin the loop. Generate 80 red mana and 80 blue mana. If you get targeted by a removal spell then in response generate the mana again. What could foil your plan is Time Stop. You ride the train to find Pyromatics for the win condition, so draw the deck). Replicate fire to the head 40X FTW. If they can counter one they can't counter all 40!
So what are all the counter spells for? To stall the opponent from winning the game and to protect your combo. I don't play Pili-Pala until I have 5 mana on the board and a counterspell in hand.
