To play your deck at an official ("DCI-sanctioned") tournament you need a deck registration sheet. Here you can download such a sheet pre-filled with the cards in this deck!
Please note: This is not an official DCI service. So please always make extra sure that the sheet contains all the cards in your deck and fulfils all DCI requirements. If you notice anything wrong, please let us know. DCI is a trademark of of Wizards of the Coast LLC.
This is a Kaalia commander deck focused on duels, but also has replacements to a multiplayer scenario (side board). The deck uses
Kaalia to soft casting, however to do so it uses disruption and removal spells to control the game.
Avacyn, Angel of Hope + Armageddon is like to end any game if not answered on act. Even Armageddon itself with Kaalia on game will give us a huge advantage it, since mana rocks and soft castings will do the trick.
Kaalia of the Vast + Master of Cruelties is the classical hit kill combo the people loves to hate. At multiplayer this is removed, since I think there's no room for this kind of more hate toward us there. However, taking out an opponent with it would turn our removals more efficient toward the others.
Kaalia of the Vast + Rakdos the Defiler is an effective way to get rid of half the opponent's permanents and it's , most of the time, as definitive as Armageddon itself. Even a second attack may be interesting if sacrificing half of your stuff will grant the advantage over your opponent. This second attack IS NOT advised in a multiplayer game!
In order to provide a removal/blockers/disruption shield over Kaalia there's Earnest Fellowship and to shield it at my turn there's Grand Abolisher, providing anti-counter possibilities and highly advised to tutor against highly permissive opponents. Defense Grid were removed here due to the harm to our light package of removals. Cavern of Souls is here to grant our beautiful lady to unleash our threats on permissive decks. Phyrexian Tower is the best sac outlet available to us, granting a good mana source and answer to split second control changing, for example. Homeward Path could be here too, but the mana fix is very important in this deck and we don't have {G} to grant us that. The relatively large set of discard is here to get rid of removals and counters on Kaalia. Liliana of the Veil dispenses presentation. Sire of Insanity is a all-in strategy when playing against control decks, it also provides a hilarious bulls-eye-effect in multiplayer games.
The tutors on this deck are the classics: Demonic Tutor and Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Consultation and Enlightened Tutor. Rune-scarred Demon uses Kaalia ability to a nice tutoring too. Fetching lands is not so well-developed here (unless fetch lands themselves), but instead of Weathered Wayfarer stuff raw card draw seems plausible. Tithe is a good option to mana fix our early game.
Most of the lands were replaced, taking out EBT lands and adding shocklands, painlands and the like. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth provides mana fix to check lands (Isolated Chapel and Dragonskull Summit). There's lots of mana rocks to ramp and granting a mana base when MLD is applied. Hall of the Bandit Lord and Dragon Tempest provides the essential haste to Kaalia (or other beating creatures), it won more than one game already. Jeweled Amulet is a mana-battery that grants Kaalia an earlier enter on the stage, providing a first turn mana rock (Sol Ring style). 0 CMC mana rocks as Lotus Peta], Mox Diamond and Chrome Mox create a surprising effect to cast Kaalia, so usually it's cast in the same turn that our lovely lady reaches the filed.
Mass removal of creatures is done by Wrath of God, Damnation, Toxic Deluge and Fire Covenant and the beatsticker Balefire Dragon.
As spot removals we have the classical Path to Exile and Swords to Plowshare and Go for the throat (mono color spell really useful when Fellowship is in field, same for Dismember), accompanied by PW killers Dreadbore and Hero's Downfall, multi-task Vindicate, Angel of Despair and Wear / Tear, beside the versatile Council's Judgment. Unexpectedly Absent and Crackling Doom are good answers to indestructible/hexproof targets as well. Vampire Hexmage is a good early beatstick and response to PWs or any counter based permanent. Clock haters here are Mana Tithe and Withering Boon (nobody expects it, really funny to use).
Gisela, Blade of Goldnight is a so cute inclusion that I have few words to her. Most of competitive Kaalia players don't use it, but she is always so good to me that I just can't take her out. It's the same to Iona, Shield of Emeria, she usually insta kill 3/4 of my opponents removals or answers, what grants Kaalia and her more time to finish the game. Mother of Runes acts the same here, as blocking free attacks or removals answer.
This deck should control the board with an aggro/combo style attached to it, so as far as Kaalia swings the game is to be almost over. To accomplish this Ajani Vengeant was added as a more controller PW, providing some protection and clock answer. Cataclysm with Kaa-Lia in-game follows the same philosophy of Armageddon.
Card advantage is granted by Painful Truths, Night's Whisper, Dark Confidant, Skeletal Scrying as an instant speed draw. Bitterblossom provides flying chumps, so good against control decks. Also, a more aggressive strategy of drawing is granted by Necropotence, but in DC it's replaced by Read the Bones. Since this package was included I'm not suffering of out-of-fuel disease at most of the games.
On a multiplayer scenario the following replacements are implemented:
1x Animate Dead
1x Avacyn, Angel of Hope
1x Beacon of Unrest
1x Blinding Angel
1x Bloodgift Demon
1x Boros Signet
1x Chaos Warp
1x Coldsteel Heart
1x Dance of the Dead
1x Defense Grid
1x Fellwar Stone
1x Hallowed Burial
1x Hellkite Tyrant
1x Karmic Guide
1x Magus of the Moat
1x Necromancy
1x Orzhov Signet
1x Phyrexian Arena
1x Rakdos Signet
1x Reanimate
1x Reya Dawnbringer
1x Scourge of Kher Ridges
1x Sun Titan
1x Talisman of Indulgence
1x Thundermaw Hellkite
1x Utvara Hellkite
1x Wrath of God
Planeswalkers are not kept, they are usually aimed by other players and will get even more attention to myself (Kaalia is already a huge decoy, even with more OP generals on my meta). Instead of using one-player disruptions a reanimation strategy is put in use with the cards above. Tariel, Reckoner of Souls seemed to me like a good reanimator, but for now it wasn't as useful as I expected. I replaced it at the main strategy for another beatstick.
The main source (almost all of this list, my guru) I got from http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/forum-1-vs-1-commander-decklists/206319-traditional-commander-kaalia-of-the-vast. My deck improved a lot (it REALLY REALLY changed from what it was at the beggining) since following this discussion thread.
