And just me personally I don't really feel like the one red card(Temur Battle Rage) is worth splashing the 4th color.
If you're building a deck around Assault Formation there are plenty of cards with high defense and low mana cost.

I play an Abzan version of this deck and have the Ox (0/4) as a white one drop. There is a superior black version (Disowned Ancestor) with outlast. I highly recommend one if not both creatures as this would give you a quick  defense or, if you are lucky, a strong attack turn 2.

besides dark petition, how do you plan on getting assault formation when you don't draw it?

Card off the top of my head, taigam's scheming will manipulate your deck.

If you are looking for further tutors, you can also play Sidisi, Undead Vizier.

She allows you to search your library for a card, has a beefy toughness, and has deathtouch.  Maybe a better option than your other tutor?
