DCI is a trademark of of Wizards of the Coast LLC.
My Personal deckbuilding rules and restrictions (and why):
No infinite (win the game) combos that are made up of three or fewer cards including the commander. This means that my decks cannot "win out of nowhere". Also because of this, every decision in the game is meaningful. I find it very unsatisfying when someone wins with a simple two-card combo that required no prior setup or thoughtful decision-making to execute.
Build around a mechanic or idea and not a path to victory. I aim to construct my EDH decks around a mechanic or idea that I think is fun, unique, and interesting. Then from that point when you are in the game you can try to win using the cards available to you, instead of trying to win during deckbuilding.
Run a low amount of tutors and try to make them thematic tutors where possible. This allows for many different cards to be seen from game to game instead of tutoring up the "best" cards every game and winning in the exact same way. Variety is the spice of life, that's why we play a 100 card singleton format is it not?
Abide by a basic deckbuilding template of 38 lands, 10 ramp cards, 10 card advantage cards, 1-2 board wipes, and 6+ spot removal cards. This allows the deck to function so that you can have the mana to cast your spells, not run out of spells too often, and of course, remove your opponent's threats.
