Overview

  • Description: Casual control and big creature deck, good for players who like to interact with opponents and make meaningful casting and timing choices. It doesn't have many triggered or activated abilities to manage.
  • Strategy: control opponents' battlefields, put their cards in exile, then win with Umbris, Fear Manifest commander damage or Essence Harvest. Alternatively, win by decking opponents with mass exile, including Doomsday Excruciator (ideally followed by Maddening Cacophony) or with the large Horrors and Nightmares themselves.
  • Strong against: Voltron/combo/single key card-dependent decks, mid range decks, graveyard/reanimator decks. Weak against: Aggressive decks, other control decks.
  • Alternate commanders: Captain N'ghathrod and Toxrill, the Corrosive.
    • Captain N'ghathrod can work now that there is enough Horror support, and it is less of a target for removal than Umbris.
    • Toxrill, the Corrosive is a more powerful commander than N'ghathrod, and there is enough ramp to support it, but it's just as big of a target for removal as Umbris.
