A few years ago I was given a small box of random unused cards and a starter deck. I found Precursor Golem and Sensor Splicer from which I built my first 60 card deck. It was bad but I loved it; the flavor and function of building an army of unstoppable automatons really got me into this whole thing.

Since then I've been trying to find a proper home for the Splicers and friends. Only to subject them to a rouges gallery of commanders who don't know the first thing of what golems do.

I started with Sydri, Galvanic Genius. I was still new to the game and lifelink deathtouch golems seemed neat to me. In her colors there was access to only 7 golem token producers at the time. I learned quickly combo was the way to go with her. It was not very effective trying to pump each 3/3 individually.

Then I built Roon of the Hidden Realm. Now we are getting somewhere. I could use 10 different golem token producers and blink the splicers for more golems! Although this was also sub optimal, bink strategies have no interaction with charge counters and actively work against token strategies. The deck was a mess. Blinking creatures is powerful, just not with splicers.

Now what about Atraxa, Praetors' Voice? Actual synergy with charge counters, up to 10 different golem token producers, not to mention that juicy Phyrexian flavor. But once you try to build the deck you quickly find black does nothing for golem tokens, and the charge counter synergy is nice but only synergyzies with 3 cards. Not even a $30 commander can properly lead a golem army.

There are two golem legends to choose from, Karn, Silver Golem and Bosh, Iron Golem. Either have very limited access to golem token producers and are more suited to being their own solo golem. Legendary golems but no legendary master.

I remember watching the C2019 spoilers live. This was the year. There was a populate commander to be revealed, finally something to synergize with the splicers and foundries I've grown so fond of. Wizards then dropped Ghired, Conclave Exile. At first I was met with excitement, red gives access to much needed speed golems lack, not to mention Dismantle shenanigans. But I thought about it; why should I use ghired to populate 3/3s when he has 4/4s with trample built in? Again a good commander, just not for golems.

Just recently Akim the Soaring Wind seemed viable. Double strike is always good. The bird tokens are neat but don't interact with golems at all. I feel that a golem focused deck would struggle to produce a token on each opponent's turn to get proper value. Neat card but golem tokens would make it play sub optimally.

So Enter Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis. There is no direct synergy with them and golems. But their colors allow for every golem token producer in the game and access to Dismantle. Also mild flavor of theros golems. They give resources; which golems need ton of to function.

The strategy of this deck is to ramp early and start amassing charge on various artifacts. Then start producing golems with one of the 3 cost foundries or splicers. Then into rapidly expanding the army size with populate, clone cards, or huge golems. Ending the game with a large enough army. Which can get ridiculous with the right setup.

Precursor Golem will always be a risk, but is more than worth it. You want to hit it with clone cards and keep it protected. Just Precursor Golem and a clone card yields 8 3/3s. Which is great, 24 damage showing is just a starting point. If you have more golems or a kicked Rite of Replication you can imagine how rapidly things will grow.

Dismantle is never expected. Blow up your own artifacts and turn the energy into more golems, ridiculous amounts of mana, or even several extra turns with Magistrate's Scepter. You want to target surge node, a monstrous Colossus of Akros, or Eternity Vessel. Surge node is a quick 1 mana 6 charge on which ever artifact you have out. Colossus of Akros won't die to Dismantle but you still get to slap 10 energy onto something. Eternity Vessel is the best target, even at half or low life you still get tremendous value dismantling it.

I understand that a dedicated Golem General is not in huge demand, but it's one of the oldest tribes in magic thats still seeing new cards. It deserves a dedicated Commander! Skarecrows and friggen walls have dedicated generals. Do golems really have that much less appeal? It is such a neat tribe in flavor and function. Creatures that are not born but crafted. Lumbering titans waiting eons for their next instruction. That relationship of crafter and creation, each crafter bringing more power thease unstoppable soldiers.

I am banking on the commander legends set to finally create some kooky golem master. Wizards just has too, I am okay with this sub optimal janky deck. It has plenty of fun interactions, I just hope for the day Golems will finally have a proper master.
