Pauper EDH is an alternative format that uses any uncommon creature as the commander, and the 99 are commons.
Izzet Equipment? Yes! (I'm sorry.)
This deck, helmed by Maverick Thopterist is built around the really cool mechanic Improvise which makes all our equipment into mana rocks for our commander, and a few other cards. Even if tapped for mana they still can be equipped and used, they can also pay for the commander tax!
This means that once we've filled our board with equipment we'll have a repeatable cheap commander to swing in with, dealing respectable damage. As an added bonus we get tons of Thopter tokens. Since our commander is so replaceable our main concern isn't keeping him protected but cards like Vanishing (keeps our equipment safe too!), Neurok Stealthsuit and Whispersilk Cloak are still solid additions. Just make sure to shroud after putting on other equipment!
Beyond our commander we also have Goblin Gaveleer, Myr Adapter and Kazuul's Toll Collector that can swing in for massive damage.
To flood the board with equipment we run a solid amount of draw, notably Drift of Phantasms can tutor for one of the big hitters mentioned.
For removal we have some counterspells, Gorilla Shaman for artifact removal (our own nightmare) and sweepers like Fireball, Swirling Sandstorm and Rolling Thunder.
I do love me some quirky combos and this deck runs this one:
Reckless Fireweaver / Hissing Iguanar + Etherium Sculptor / Golem Foundry + Ashnod's Altar + Workshop Assistant + Myr Retriever
For infinite damage. Obviously a 5 card combo is hefty but every card is fine on its own & Ashnod can be on board and one of the artifact creatures can be in the graveyard. Keep an eye out for the stars to align!
Weaknesses of the deck would be artifact removal, we can live with the occasional piece being removed and thankfully Vandalblast isn't legal in the format, but as mentioned Gorilla Shaman is a bit of a nightmare.
I've decided to omit Rhystic Study and graveyard hate; Tormod's Crypt & Relic of Progenitus. Run them if you wish.
If you have any thoughts or suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em!
