With the rise of Kylie's clone of Silumgar, the Drifting Death becoming Silumgar, God of Dragons, and the power he added to the combined force of Kylie, Pharika, Kruphix, the Scarab God, and Thassa, the multiverse was healed. The distortion the planeswalkers planeswalking had caused was undone, giving the multiverse a second chance to live. After the exhausting ritual of The Healing of Worlds, her job at last concluded, Dr. Kylie Moriarty thought she could at last take a nice rest. This was permitted for 48 hours, after which the rest was immediately stopped by the arrival of Klothys. What the real Klothys was doing in England is a question better not asked.

Klothys was outraged at what Kylie had done, both in removing the taint planeswalkers were causing and in raising Silumgar to godhood and trying to raise more creatures to it. She was livid, demanding answers and requiring the whole effort be undone. The only reason Klothys didn't kill Kylie right there was because Kruphix intervened to protect her. He wanted to send Klothys back to the underworld, but she was stronger than he was, finding an unexpected ally in the Scarab God, while Thassa reminded Klothys she controlled Theros' fate, but not everyone else's, and Pharika added that life and death are something to study and manipulate, but that they are not games. This got Klothys' attention. Even Kylie and her clones of planeswalkers and gods weren't enough to stop her, but a game is.

Klothys is not interested in the game Kylie offers, but allows her to create a clone of her and play the game with her. If the game is won, the healing of worlds will not be undone, nor will Silumgar's rise to godhood.. However, if she loses, every part of the multiverse will be subject to radical distortion, a process only Pharika's clone dared to say was "Klothys killing the patient to save it," and she was quite right. So it's a question of who will win. The game is a race between the clone of Klothys' Chance Encounter and Dr. Moriarty's Helix Pinnacle. Whomever wins decides the fate of the planet.

The clone of Vivien Reid is opposed to this and argues with Klothys, so she tells Vivien that she will assist Kylie, and prays to herself that the two women succeed.

The trouble is, only Pharika notices that all this energy has created another problem; Xenagos, God of Revels, has been reborn, a flaw in Klothys' design she did not see.

Xenagos demands someone tell him what is going on, which the Scarab God does, unaware of Xenagos' nature. Now that he knows Klothys' game, he means to take control of it, which Klothys promptly shuts down. Xenagos retaliates by using his restored powers to contact all planeswalkers and inform them of what Kylie has done and where to find her, putting Great Britain and Planet Earth in terrible danger.

Klothys orders Kruphix, Thassa, Pharika, Silumgar, and the Scarab God to form a protective barrier around Planet Earth to keep the planeswalkers from entering it until she is ready. Ready for what, Klothys does not say.

She seizes control of Xenagos and makes him her assistant, then takes him and leaves for somewhere. Kylie knows, however, that this is all part of Klothys' game, including the return of Xenagos. What Klothys doesn't know is that there is a ritual Kylie can use to bind a god. With a spell, Kylie entreats Xenagos to keep Klothys distracted, to which he agrees readily, as he dislikes being unofficially enslaved. Since Klothys cannot see her, Kylie binds her with druidic magic, turning her into the commander (with Xenagos as her assistant) in stopping the arrival of planeswalkers she caused to be a threat in the first place (by using Xenagos and The Scarab God to do it).

Now Klothys has to undo a mess of her own making instead of undoing the Healing of Worlds, aided by a clone of the god she hates most in all the universe. The prize is Klothys' freedom, though to Klothys' surprise, Kylie has merely bound her, not enslaved her. All they have to do is work together to defend Great Britain and the binding is broken (by which time Kruphix will have regained enough power, alongside the other gods, to keep Klothys in check).
