Heliod's Devout Angels (Modern)

In short, Heliod's Devout Angels is a mono-white devotion deck themed around various angels dishing out divine punishment in service of Heliod, God of the Sun.

This is a slightly altered version of a deck I found on TappedOut.net. One should always give credit where it's due, so you can find the original deck list linked here:

The goal of the deck is to stall the game long enough to get out the beater(s) of your choice and win.

The main changes I made were mostly for thematic purposes and most of the changes were to the sideboard. I replaced Ghostly Prison with Archangel of Tithes, removed Mana Tithe from the sideboard altogether and added Heliod, God of the Sun, Linvala, the Preserver and Linvala, Keeper of Silence. An additional Runed Halo was added to the mainboard.

I wanted Heliod, God of the Sun mostly because he has exellent synergy with Archangel of Tithes. I feel giving her vigilance can make her more annoying for aggro-focused opponents to deal with. Heliod is also a great mana sink in the late game with the 2/1 chump blockers/sacrificial fodder he can pump out if needed. And because he's a Legendary he's easily fetchable with Thalia's Lancers.

As for Archangel of Tithes, I feel she synergizes better with the deck than Ghostly Prison. Her devotion is higher, she can help with offense as well as defense, protects our Plainswalkers and she has synergy with both Cavern of Souls and Emeria, the Sky Ruin.

Linvala, Keeper of Silence has a powerful ability, but since a lot of creatures in my local meta have EtB effects instead of activated abilities she had to be relegated to the SB. I couldn't bring myself to remove her from the deck list entirely.

As for Linvala, the Preserver... she's probably the hardest card to justify in this deck. She's there mostly because I like her, but also because she's beautiful and she's on theme. If you're playing her when you should she's stabilizing you and/or giving you 8 flying damage across two bodies, so that's something.

I love that this deck gives a lot of options to win. The deck is full of various synergies, feels smooth and consistent and is extremely fun to play.

I sincerely hope others enjoy this deck as much as I do.
