Still trying out different builds of B/W Control, to see what has a chance to get a 50% win rate in the long run.

I tried Leyline of Sanctity and Leyline of the Void, both 3x, in the maindeck, which was too many cards that did nothing in too many matchups, and raised the mana curve too much.

I tried Night's Whisper in the mainboard, to have some semblance of blue card draw mainboard, only to find out it was too high a cost to get two random cards.

Now I'm giving Runed Halo a shot Mainboard, which buffs the 1-2 CMC curve a bit, and complements the package of Gideon of the Trials as protection against unfair decks.

I also upped the number of Planeswalkers. Turns out that not playing blue and thus not having access to filtering (oh, for a Search for Azcanta in black ...) means that the threat density has to be really high in order to be able to close out games.

Speaking of filtering: one Phyrexian Arean mainboard for card draw. 2 would be too much, as you never want two at the same time.

I played around with the manabase, in order to squeeze in as many basics as possible. I really, really dislike losing to Blood Moon. So, what I did:

  • if I want 4 colorless utility lands (which I do), then the maximum number of basics seems to be 10 (5 of each): you need 10 dual-color sources to have a 80%+ chance of having one in the first three land drops. This is important, since I have 3 double-color planeswalkers with CMC 3
  • 10 basics, 2 fetches and 1 shock gives me 13 lands with land-type plains or swamp. This in turn means an 80%+ chance of having one in the first 2 lands, and 90%+ in the first 3. This means I can play with 4 Isolated Chapel (mathematically), since chances are more or less 50/50 to have at least one in the first 3 or 4 lands

An added advantage of this mana base is that it has a maximum of 4 damage to take from fetches and shocklands. Before, I had 10, which made some games very, very painful.

The manabase is running incredibly well, and feels like the best part of the deck.
