This deck began from a really intense desire to make use of Teneb, the Harvester. At the time, I felt I had too many commander decks already, especially ones using Orzhov and Golgari cards, so I thought about making a 60 card singleton deck, for casual play with friends. I also really wanted to get a Skyrim-feel, partly from being dragged into that game again, partly because I like themed decks, and partly because Teneb, the Harvester seemed like nothing else to me than Alduin, since he can raise the dead and all, both from one's own and from opponents' graveyards.
However, it didn't quite gel, and at the same time I also had a Rith deck that I didn't particularly derive much enjoyment from. They didn't really have a lot of overlap though (and still don't), other than the fact that Rith took up one of the commander slots. Then the idea dawned on me: there was someone else who could really represent Alduin, someone who indeed could - for just the payment of 2 mana - draw upon the graveyard to use Teneb's ability and those of many more dragons: namely, Scion of the Ur-Dragon! This allowed me to make it a five-colour deck, shove in a bunch of dragons I really like (including Teneb, but also others), get that theme, and yet go in a quite different direction from the other Dragon tribal deck in my playgroup (which is an Ur-Dragon deck).
Many of the dragons are chosen because of the way Scion can draw upon their abilities: Silumgar and Ojutai can protect it, Nicol Bolas can shred an opponents hand, while Dragon Mage can scramble everyones and draw us all seven. Savage Ventmaw and Hellkite Charger can work well in conjunction, while the likes of Atarka and Moltensteel Dragon can kill very quickly out of nowhere, while adding a copy of Curiosity provides another win-con with Niv-Mizzet (or Scion copying it). While some non-legendaries made it in due to their abilities, legendaries seemed to get more love, both because of their abilities and because having named dragons seemed more thematic of Alduin's followers.
What with all this putting dragons into the graveyard, that synced well with the graveyard subtheme I was looking at with Teneb (who can either be used by Scion, or raise the dead in his own right), so I added a few more reanimation cards, especially Primevals' Glorious Rebirth, which just seemed really on theme (what with dragons coming back from death) and can comfortably reanimate 2/3rd of my creatures.
Other cards were added that seemed to fit in with the decks plan and the theme. Deciding to plump for the Snow Lands may not make a huge amount of difference (but allowed me to use some cards), but seems really in flavour, and gets the most use out of my two fetchlands, Farseek and Skyshroud Claim (which literally shares its name with a Barrow in the Elder Scrolls universe!). Once snow lands were added, Draugr Necromancer had to be added for similarly themey reasons. So even if this deck can sometimes combo out, hopefully it'll be dripping in flavour when it does so!
[quote]I really wanted to make use of Teneb, the Harvester, but I have too many Commander decks already, making use of my better Orzhov or Golgari cards. And looking at Teneb, I really wanted to make a Skyrim themed deck: he's a dragon who raises the dead, and can even draw strength from opponents graveyards, so he's really Alduin the World-Eater... what to do??
