I've been doing a best build series where I take a cool card from the new set and see what kinds of decks I can build around it. This time I decided to tackle Gutterbones.

The first thing I noticed was that it is a skeleton, which led me to think "this would go nicely with Death Baron". The deck had some pieces since there are good zombies: Diregraf Ghoul, Graveyard Marshall, Midnight Reaper. It is almost there, except it comes short of a quality 2cmc creature for an aggro shell. You could push it, but I wouldn't.

So moving on, I next thought a lot of these cards have graveyard interaction or recursion capabilities. So I thought Aristocrats? Yeah, it just makes sense.

a) You can sac them off or let them die in combat and get advantages from that.
b) The deck still is somewhat aggressive with overpowered creatures on curve early.
c) A lot of the skeletons and zombies have recursion so they actually are perfect for aristocrats.

I'm going to quickly run through the purpose of each card in the deck (remembering there is a zombie/skeleton subtheme).

1) Death Baron
pretty obvious, the Lord for our aggro backup plan.
one Lord is not really enough, but we have ways to get him into and out of the yard so the likely of seeing him is pretty good.

2) Find // Finality
Find gets us two creatures back from the yard, and the yard will be pretty full.
Finality is not of much use, normally it would be a game-ender with a card like Judith, the Scourge diva, but our aristocrat abilities are activated.

3) Graveyard Marshall
one of the decks all-star cards. Making a crap ton of zombie tokens is pretty sweet since they can then be sacked or can build up a nice army along side Death Baron.
nive aggressive creature in the early turns.
*unfortunately, does not work well with Midnight Reaper.

4) Open the Graves
I was originally playing Gruesome Menagerie, but I totally forgot this card existed.
when the nontoken creatures die (which will happen often) we get a 2/2 zombie. This powers up our sac outlets in a big way.
*does not work with Graveyard Marshall tokens and Midnight Reaper will not trigger from its own tokens, but the upside outweighs the down.

5) Gutterbones
*aggressive and great recursion.

6) Midnight Reaper
*will draw a crap ton of cards. Just be careful not to kill yourself.

7) Priest of Forgotten Gods
our main sac outlet and aristocrat damage source.
drawing a card each time is excellent, especially since you get two mana to help cast it.

8) Ravenous Chupacabra.
removal on a stick.
can be sacrificed and retrieved again.

9) Stitcher's Supplier
hurts the aggressive subtheme, but in the end is a better play then Diregraf Ghoul.
so much synergy with Graveyard Marshall, Find, and sac outlets

10) Tattered Mummy
this was the toughest inclusion. I just wanted something better as my backup 2cmc creature.
the truth is whatever creature it was it is included as sac fodder, thus getting to deal 2 extra damage and being a zombie made it a decent choice.

11) Vicious Offering
perfect removal for this deck. Gives us a way to kill early turn creatures such as Llanowar Elves, and kills that nasty little Vanguard pest. All for 2cmc.
can upgrade to killing most the threats in the format while doubling as a sac outlet.

12) Vraska, Golgari Queen
a sac outlet that draws a card is great.
gaining that one life is important, especially with Midnight Reaper.
*a lot of times you will tick her down for that removal, and it will be totally worth it.

Sideboard:
just answers for problems that might arise from problem cards or strategies.
the core of the deck cannot change much as you want to keep both the zombie/skeleton and sacrifice synergies in tact.

Overall:

a) The deck is not going to take over standard anytime soon or anything, however if you are looking for a deck that is very different to try out then this can be a pretty cheap deck to try out at FNM or on arena.

b) I feel the decks strength is the card advantage. You draw a ton of cards throughout the game and you can return so many cards from your graveyard. This makes it possible to simply outlast your opponents.

c) Arena- if I were to play this on Bo1 onarena I would have to move Assassin's Trophy into the (main) deck. You need answers to enchantments in this upcoming standard.

d) Kraul Harpooner lacks a zombie synergy, but I might have to look at it over Tattered Mummy. It is just such a better card and still triggers dying triggers, without a sac outlet. It is also such a better card to retrieve to your hand.
