This deck is a modified version of the deck Javier Dominquez, Martin Muller, and Seth Manfield played at the Mythic Championship. I saw the best of 3 deck list and just knew it would be powerful in 1v1. I have recently given up on my old Gruul build on Arena. It was a great deck for the first month of the format, however it has not held up so well of late. The extra card draw from Edgewall Innkeeper provides a lot of what Gruul lacked. Also, I have found the riot squad a little less explosive since standard has evolved and haste is a little less needed.
My modifications for 1v1 are:
1) Cut x1 Veil of Summer, x1 Embercleave, x1 Domri's Ambush
Veil is a meta card, not nearly as relevant in 1v1.
I find Embercleave to be amazing, but the deck can win without drawing it and really you want to draw it as you go and not start the game with multiple copies.
*Domri's Ambush is very good removal, but I think three is the right 1v1 number. Could be 4 though since there are so many small creatures to clear out of the way.
2) Add x3 Collision Colossus
I have found this to be such a game finisher and relevant removal piece.
Trampling over small creatures in 1v1 is very common.
3) I'm looking very hard at the x4 Kraul Harpooner. I very much understand its purpose. Cooking the old Goose is an amazing turn two play in best of three, but I'm not sure how good it plays in 1v1 where the Goose is a much smaller portion of the meta. It also serves as a very aggressive two drop so I'm leaving it be for now.
*I actually considered some Stonecoil Serpent's here. It can be dropped at any point of the curve and can trample over small blockers nicely. Survives some removal and cannot be blocked by multicolored creatures. My logic in not playing it right now is that the majority of decks online are monocolored or at the very least play mostly monocolored creatures and spells (a lot of mono black, mono red, and green creatures). I expect the serpent to get better as the format evolves in future sets.
