This deck is built around Thing in the Ice, Chasm Skulker, and Horror creatures. Thing In The Ice, in order to be effective, needs instants and sorcery spells to be played consistantly or have its counters removed by other sources. Chasm Skulker can stave off enemy creature attacks and acquires counters through drawing cards. This makes Power Conduit particularly useful, as it can remove counters from Thing in the Ice and deposit them onto Chasm Skulker. Thrull Parasite serves three purposes. It is in this deck as a backup method of removing counters from Thing in the Ice, but it also serves as a small life gain mechanic with extort and is ultimately a disposable creature through Flesh Carver's sacrifice ability and Skabb Ruinator's additional casting cost. Flesh Carver is useful in a number of ways, as it provides a method of creature removal in case Thing in the Ice or Chasm Skulker are threatened by removal or other inhibiting spells. Saab Ruinator merely benefits from creatures in the graveyard, and is a strong 5/6 flying Horror who can be cast multiple times throughout the game and would survive Awoken Horror's triggered ability. Consuming Aberration is an obvious choice for a blue black horror deck, as it's ability is insanely strong against multiple opponents, and can only benefit from the various milling spells included in this deck, not to mention the amazing combo with Phenax, God of Deception, which turns all your creatures into milling machines. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed is also another obvious choice for this deck, since you may be sacrificing quite a few creatures with Flesh Carver, or just have creatures being removed by opponents. Vela the Night-Clad is a card that pairs well with both Awoken Horror's ability and Mikaeus's Undying. Since Chasm Skulker, when it dies, does not produce "Horror" Squids, but only normal Squids, they're susceptible to Awoken Horror's triggered ability, which would wipe them from the board. With Vela, however, this would be a great thing. And this would pair just as well with any creature who has undying. Let's not forget Duskmantle Guildmage, who I threw in there as a possible game-ending card. For instance, his first ability makes an opponent lose a life for each card put into their graveyard from anywhere on that turn. This could combo well with Startled Awake, having them lose 13 cards AND 13 life, or with Glimpse the Unthinkable, having them lose 10 life. Not to mention how well this combos with Phenax, God of Deception, where I cold potentially tap all my creatures on the battlefield, mill an opponents library to death, and even have them lose that much life at the same time. This deck is crazy powerful when played correctly.

As this deck does rely heavily on drawing mechanics it also relies on milling mechanics to boost Consuming Aberration and But this deck also relies on milling opponent libraries, since the best horror cards rely on large graveyards in order to become unstoppable. There are a few shortcomings worth noting, however. Thing in the Ice and Chasm Skulker are both extremely vulnerable to both unblockable creatures and spells and abilities which remove them or render them unusable. Flesh Carver is useful for this reason. I can cheaply discard any creature I need to on the battlefield and repurpose it for an X/X horror creature, which is extremely useful as it allows me to get tokens from Chasm Skulker whenever I need to and helps me get around detainment spells. Another incredibly useful detail of this card is that its sacrifice feature doesn’t rely on the sacrificed creatures’ power or toughness to determine the amount of counters placed on it. This makes sacrificing 1/1 Squid creatures an easy and painless chore, considering they are not horror creatures and thus might inevitably be swept away by the transformed Awoken Horror. However, Flesh Carver is also not a horror creature, leaving him vulnerable to Awoken Horror’s ability. To get around this, a few Hero’s Downfall are there to help kill him before Awoken Horror transforms.
