SCIENTIA POTENTIA EST - Rielle, the Everwise EDH (EDH / Commander)

For most Magic software, including Magic Workstation and Cockatrice:

For MTG Arena:

For Magic Online (MTGO):

For others:

To play your deck at an official ("DCI-sanctioned") tournament you need a deck registration sheet. Here you can download such a sheet pre-filled with the cards in this deck!

(-> Your Settings)

Please note: This is not an official DCI service. So please always make extra sure that the sheet contains all the cards in your deck and fulfils all DCI requirements. If you notice anything wrong, please let us know. DCI is a trademark of of Wizards of the Coast LLC.

Please select the columns you would like to see:

Knowledge Is Power. Rielle knows this... She knows almost anything. Play your instants and sorceries, write History and let Rielle thrive in the knowledge you give her, thus giving her more power. Knowledge Is Power... You have been warned.

The deck is basically a Voltron shell filled with ways to support Rielle's potential to get huge and her ability to dig deep into the deck to find your best cards. The deck contains a bunch of protections since you are low on creatures (except some notable exceptions, see below).
General rules:

  1. Every card that has an ability that lets you cast it from the graveyard (like Flashback, Escape, Aftermath, etc) is particularly good in the deck. You can discard it early and replay it later on when you need it.
  2. Discarding is not a drawback with Rielle on the battlefield (this is obvious). Looking for cards that normally would have a drawback is part of the fun in the deckbuilding. Go find some cool cards!
  3. I didn't want to include a lot of group wheels, since they tend to draw a ton attention/hate on you.
  4. Don't be afraid to discard aggressively your hand, you will be rewarded as the game goes on.

You have got to know your weaknesses; after all, isn't knowledge what we seek?
Clear weaknesses:

  • Graveyard hate: if your playgroup has a lot of them, you should try to slot in a Disallow instead of another counter to try and get those pesky Bojuka Bog s out of the way. If, instead, they use repeatable effects like Scavenging Ooze, the Control package should have your back covered.
  • Cast-uninteractive creatures: basically creatures that get on the battlefield without being casted: a Landfall trigger from a permanent, a Field of the Dead zombie army, etc. Based on what your playgroup has, you should be packing more or less targeted removal (do you need land destruction? Strip Mine, Ghost Quarters, etc should do it), or a fast way to deal with them while you go for lethal commander damage ( maybe Cyclonic Rift? I don't use it because I hate it and find it too strong and I do not own it, but if you want to play the rift... Eh, go for it. Probably the best card in casual EDH). The point is that you generally suffer from big boards, but you have a couple of tricks to get rid of it. If the creatures consistently enter the battlefield and they are not casted... Then you probably need to adjust to it.

Notes on some cards/slots:

  • Key to the City: this is (forgive in advance for the pun, I don't like making puns) a key piece in the deck, it basically does both things you want to do in this deck, discard and give evasion (the best type of evasion!) to Rielle. All of this for no mana, and it can give you an extra card if you're stuck. Very good card.
  • Lands: I have decided to have just 3 cycle lands in the deck, I feel more than 3 can be too much and I don't want to risk having another land etb tapped. Maybe 4-5 could work, but I'm not completely sold.
  • Commit // Memory: a needed piece in the deck. It helps to delay a big spell/permanent an opponent controls, while serving as a "fresh restart button" when you don't want to deck yourself. Bonus: you can discard it with nonchalance and cast it later for its Aftermath cost.
  • Firestorm: discarding is part of the cost and you need to have X valid targets when you cast it, so be careful when you use it. Either way, it's a pretty darn good card for just a R. It can even help you push those last needed damage points.
  • Turbulent Dreams: it's a shame this is a sorcery, or else it would embarass your friends' Cyclonic Rift. Still a bomb with Rielle in play, it will put people behind while you progress with your game plan. For 2 mana. Is this Rielle? (ok, maybe I like puns).
  • Ox of Agonas: The Golden Ox of the deck. You will always have a good use for the Ox of Agonas, his escape cost being so low and repeatable is so valueable with Rielle, that you will never have enough of him. Crazy good value card, he gets the ValueTown Citizenship.
  • Surly Badgersaur: He's so good if you get a good discard that you will wonder why you didn't play him a turn earlier. He can make your turn last longer if you happen to discard a bunch of lands (hello treasures!) while he simultaneously takes off small to medium sized creatures. Even at his lowest, he is useful. Gets the ValueTown Citizen Badge.
  • MEME Slot: I think every EDH (non-competitive) should have at least a dedicated meme slot, a card or two that have interaction with the deck, but with a fun twist/effect. To me, Bomat Courier is kind of a meme in EDH, so for now I am putting it in the MEME slot. Haters gonna hate, couriers gonna... cour? (Sorry Chapo)

Anger and Wonder are under evaluation, if they happen to be redundant (AKA I have an already sufficient number of other cards that give Rielle haste/evasion) they will be removed.
Update: Wonder has been moved to Maybeboard after feeling unnecessary. Further testing will be made.
