Thesis: Get Lica out early and create havoc. Use the life gain created by Licia to power through the endgame.

Ede's Deck-building Philosophy:
Build your deck to be interactive, resilient, and competitive. Don't sacrifice one for the others. You only get to spend so much time at the table, build your deck so that you are able to PLAY MAGIC at all times. This means being able to bounce back from board wipes, prevent mana screw, plow through mana floods, and not stall out on card draw. Commander games can take a long time, build your deck to guarantee you always have something to do at the table; build to be "in the thick of it."

Specific Notes on Building This Deck:
1) The life gain effects this deck needs are rather narrow. Ideally, you want them in your first main phase. This would allow you to cast Licia and equip a haste effect for combat that turn. This eliminates life gain effects during your opponent's turn and on your end step. While these effects aren't detrimental, I have found that having too many of them dilutes the ability to get Licia involved in your game plan early.

Key:
IB = In Box. This deck is complete yet. In Box means that the cards are already set aside in the deck box.
SC = Shared Card. This card is shared among other EDH Decks and not kept in the box.
Sub = Actual Card not owned. Using named card as a substitute.

Sideboard contains cards that are relevant to the deck in some way, but are currently being played. These may be cards in consideration for inclusion. They may be there in the event the meta game shifts and specific effects are needed. They may just be fun cards I want to play in the deck someday.

Specific Notes on Playing This Deck:
• You are going to be the target as soon as you swing with Licia. Prepare for this attention.
• If you don't finish the game fast, change your win condition away from Licia. If they have an established board, Licia combat damage isn't likely to be effective. Instead, use the life she gains you as a currency to win. Think Sanguine Bond, Exquisite Blood, and Aetherflux Reservoir.
• Opponents will remove the following on sight: Boon Reflection, Greed. They seem less inclined to remove: Venser's Journal, Dawn of Hope, Land Tax.
• The Blood Bond combo is only for games that refuse to end. Don't be that guy. Unless something obnoxious is going on, just keep the second one in your hand. Even if that means letting someone else have the win. And if you do let someone else have the win, don't mention that you had the combo the whole time. That minimizing someone else's victory by being a dick.

Game 1:
This turned out to be a very odd game for Licia. First, it was a very long game. More than 16 turns. Typically, Licia doesn’t see long games. She wins quickly, or is taken out fast.

The initial start was odd too. I didn't ramp a single time, but because of the massive amounts of card draw I include, I also didn't miss a land drop. Oddly comforting.

Most notably, I spent the first 12 turns of that without Licia on the board. ChrisB came out the gate with a bit of quick ramp. Simic…. He had two gods in play by Turn 8. I had already wiped the board with a Merciless Eviction by then. I quickly counted up my outs to remove indestructible creature enchantments. Not many. If they were creatures, four tops? And I had already used one.

Licia has dealt with indestructible blockers before. It's not pretty. Sure you gain lots of life, but actually getting damage through can be difficult. So I immediately started looking to a combo kill to remove Chris. I still had no creatures on the board, but I was keeping my opponents at bay with a No Mercy. The Bright Spear player was so far ahead on board state that I was able to stick a Sanguine Bond. Andy's deck can get out of hand rather quickly. The next turn I was able to double my life total using XXXX, the sanguine bond trigger took out Chris.

By this time Inalla had recovered from a bad start and was able to start poking the Brightspear player. I wiped the board three more times. This seemed to only hit the Inalla player. Boros Charm and Teferi's protection. Yuck. Between the incoming double strike dragons from the Brightspear player and my repeated use of Greed, my life total was back down to 54; within range of the Brightspear player. Then I stuck Licia. She typically lands with a thud followed by a sigh from the other players. This was no exception. These two gentlemen knew what was to happen next. The took one look at the bag of tricks and teamed up. I can't blame them; next turn one of them was dead with just the tricks on the board. It would have been that turn, but they preemptively took out my Swiftfoot Boots.

Inalla passed the turn with lots of mana up. What a blue mage move. The Brightspear player went deep into the tank. Walked through his entire hand. By my count he had 48 on board. I started planning a way of killing one of them without dying to the other. A deal was cut, Inalla wasn't to counter a Brightspear dragon cast. Half a beer later the Bright Spear player pulled me from my planning by moving to combat. He had found the line. Through recasting his commander and a clever flicker he was able to drum up 56 damage in the air. Very nice.

After congratulating him on the kill, I went to check on the other pod. Eventually Innalla and Brightspear drew the game. Seemed Inalla had come back with something that was able to level the field after Brightspear took me out.

Lesson's Learned:
• Not ramping even one single time during this long game only reinforced my belief in including excess card draw in my decks.
• I need to spend some time thinking on how to deal with indestructible blockers. Looking back I had more options at my disposal in the deck than I considered.

Game 2:
Chris and I switched pods together. So the indestructible gods were still in my pod. Dan was playing a Brutaclad deck I had not seen before. Trevor was on Inalla. His deck is drastically different than Chris's.

Normal ramp into an early Licia. She was out on turn 5. Chris's simic deck had ramped well, no surprise. And he already had a god out, no surprise. Not much of a board presence out of the other two yet. I swung right into Chris. He chumped two rounds of attack.

Then I finally drew Divine Reckoning. It was new, I had had been hoping to use it all night. Chris responded best he could. He had two gods and a creature up. I counted the pips. I fired off a Path to Exile the remaining creature and render the two gods as solely enchantments. With no blockers, I Boros charmed Licia and took Chris out by commander damage. That was two games in a row that I killed him first. This didn't set well with me. It still doesn't. My rationale at the time: 1) He was the biggest threat at the table at the time, 2) the Simic Snowball is a natural predator to quick decks after midgame, Licia included, 3) Licia has a problem with indestructible creatures. I apologized and he took with class and grace.

This left me with just Licia on the board and two opponents who were about to unite against me. With my newfound stack of life as fuel and drew into Aetherflux Reservoir. The next turn I stuck Reservoir and one shotted the Inalla Player. His board was wider. This brought me down to 5 life. Life is a resource, right?

This left me with a single opponent; Brutaclad, a commander I was not familiar with. I think the riskiest move with this Licia deck is to NOT attack with her in order to leave her up for blocking. Without her to block, I was dead. By my math I needed to block and gain life to live. Any tricks and I was probably dead.

My opponent swung in. With no tricks. With a life gain doubler in play, I actually gained life during the attack. Dan admitted that he underestimated the impact of the life gain doubler. More life meant more cards. More cards meant more blockers. I was able to attack the next turn and Dan conceded. Licia had won on turn 11.

03/02/19 (0-1)- Lost on five person free for all. Ben(Licia), Micah(Xenogos), Justin(Grenko), Trevor(?), Chris(), Winner Micah. Licia out on turn 6. Started hitting people immediately. From then on, the Grenko player continually Goaded Licia. It was fantastic. As if I wasn't going to swing anyway. The Xenogos haste and creature ramp prompted too much to respond to after a board wipe. With a choice of empty boards, he choose me and I can't blame him, a hasty Licia was coming right back out.

Lesson's Learned and Conclusions
• This deck doesn't put up much of a creature board presence. No one attacks an untapped Licia. Everyone loves to attack you when she is tapped. It's time to add some Vigilance to the equation. This would have allowed me to handle the Grenko Goad and keep a blocker back for the Xenogos attack.
Holy shit Xenogos and Hydras is an amazing combination.

02/02/19 (0-1) -
Lost on a 4 person free for all. Ben (Licia), Trevor(Izzet), Micah(Arvad), ChrisB(Kalia), Winner ChrisB. Had a fantastic start. Was able to cast a turn 4 Licia but chose not to. No one else had any kind of a board state. I slowed down my board development a waited until turn 6. On Turn 8, Licia was large enough to kill Izzet or Arvad. Both seemed equal. Izzet lost the dice and took the hit. The board was wiped and my enchantments were removed leaving me with nothing but Mana. The Kaalia deck managed to put two Iona's in play blocking White and Black. I was able to remove the White, but the black remained. The Arvad and Kaalia deck found parity while I struggled far behind. Kaalia was able to give her board vigilence, so I was the punching bag while they danced around each other. Arvad eventually fell to Kaalia's value engine.

Lesson's Learned and Conclusions
• I'm not sure what to make of the Iona. I was sitting on great cards. Demonic Tutor, Hide/Seek, Erebos. I could have used Hide//Seek to put Lica into play. Demonic tutor to find removal. My removal suite does look a little heavy on White. Subbing in a Choas Warp might not be a bad idea.
• Is the deck too fast? In my meta I find I'm ready to swing earlier than most players. But the first king of the mountain falls the hardest. Recovering from that fall can take some time. I have unconsciously started holding back enchantment and artifact synergies until others have been removed.

01/05/19 (0-0) -
Game cancelled on gameplay error. Lesson's Learned 1) Double strike creatures don't dmg opponents if no remaining creatures are left in the main cmb dmg phase. 2) Still need more trample effects to fully utilize doublestrike and lifegain together. Deck performed well. It again found itself the target of early removal. Licia was removed on turn 5. Alhammeret's removed on 7. Once greed came out I was able to keep fueling the deck. I had enough black mana to draw three or four cards per turn and gain the life back through an assortment of means.

12/09/18 (1-1) -
Game 1 - Lost on a 4 person free for all. Chris on Mimoplasm, Micah on ??, Tim on Dinos. Took three flickers from a Mimoplasm's Terrastadon to clear my enchantments and artifacts. Last one to go was ghostly prison, after that, the flood came in and took me out. Dinos came back and took the victory over Micah though.

Game 2 - Won a 4 person free for all, but shouldn't have. Chris on Saheeli, Micah and Ezuri, Tim on Merfolk. Saheeli and Micah went after each other in a war of attrition. Tim seems to focus me the entire game. Barely stayed above 20 through non-combat lifegain. I had Licia out, but no defense. Drained Ezuri with ##. Merfolk returned all creatures to hand and posed Saheeli with a choice on who to kill. Saheeli chose Dinos. Saheel had a 40 permanent board state, I had 5. I drew Enlightened Tutor on the end step and was able to cast it to tutor up Sanguine Bond. I was able to cast it, attack and give Serra Ascendant double strike with a Boros Charm, healing salve, then Swords to Plowshares Serra Ascendant to bring Saheeli exactly to 0. Epic ending.

Lesson's Learned and Conclusions:
Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth needs to go back in the deck. I forgot about the card greed. I found myself with excess mana and life at the end of turns, but not black mana. Having this would allow me to burn it all for card draw.
Expedition Map needs to be added. I don't know why I didn't include it earlier. The Expedition Map, Maze of Ith, Strip Mine set is already included in the rest of my decks.
• This deck needs more Vigilance. Often I couldn't attach because I would leave myself open. A large Licia is a great preventative measure, but if she is preventing people from attacking you without vigilance you aren't gaining life from her attacks. That lifegain is currency in this deck. She has to be able to attack and defend at the same time.
• The deck is thin on creatures and opponents love to remove this deck's Artifacts and Enchantments.
Venser's Journal is a fantastic way to get Licia on the board.

12/01/18 (0-1) - Lost a 4 person free for all, but was the main target the entire time. Tim was playing my own Cat deck and started off fast with an infect Voltron cat. Tim nearly killed Andy this way. I killed him on turn 7 with commander damage by giving double strike to Licia. Two remaining players turned on me together. I was able to hold them off by gaining massive amounts of life each turn. I was kinda drunk, but the deck was massively fun to play.

Change Log:
03/12/2019
Removed: Agent of Masks, Lone Rider, Scholar of Abhorrent, Mortify, Norn's Annex, Vizkopa Guildmage
Added: Sword of Vengeance, Haunted Cloak, Expedition Map, Blade of the Bloodchief, Teferi's Protection, Divine Reckoning, Chaos Warp

Revision 19 through ## - 11/25/18
Benchmarks were bad from revision 17 were bad. These revisions continue to focus on lifegain in the precombat main phase. Continuing to cut cards that have effects after Licia is already on the board. I am still under the impression that the power of this deck is centered around getting Licia out early. Removed: Tymna the Weaver; Brutal Hordechief; Cliffhaven Vampire; Path to Exile; Test of Endurance; Tresspasser's Curse; True Conviction; Wall of Reverence. Added: Chaplain's Blessing; Healing Grace; Healing Salve; Hide//Seek; Lightning Helix; Pristine Talisman; Venser's Journal.

Benchmark observations: Mana efficiency greatly increased. Licia cast time dropped by two full turns. On average it drew 1 more card than the previous revision.

Testing Observations: I had mana color problems on at least two test runs. Current list is has utility lands and combo lands in place of checklands. Increasing the fixing in the mana base may further increase the speed at which Licia hits the table. Serra Ascendant, Hide//Seek, Twilight Prophet are great at getting Licia out by Turn 5. Still haven't tested Venser's Journal.

Purchasing the remaining of the list. Next set of benchmarks will be completed in paper.
