I think u'r not using synergy of ur commander!
Try to get cards that play with counters!

I am looking to get the best bang by getting most of the ultimate's off on my planeswalker's while keeping them on the board as long as possible.

In that case, you'll want Ajani Steadfast and Oath of Gideon. Both give extra loyalty counters, which will bring you closer to activating their final abilities.  Oath of Ajani and Oath of Nissa will also make casting planeswalkers easier, and Oath of Jace will give you limited control of what cards you draw.
