I made a similar deck. Does damping matrix do the same as torpor orb?

No, it doesn't, the difference is activated (damping matrix) and triggered (torpor orb) ability, it is just for fun in that deck, because i dont have any creature that can activate an ability so its just against opponent, Tocatli Honor Guard  does the same as torpor orb
