[Brawl] Yarok, the Desecrated (halp)
« on: May 08, 2020, 02:58:33 pm »
Recently started playing magic, looking for help. this is my first brawler deck.
I feel like the deck doesnt have enough heavy hitting cards and relies on ramp from proliferate and amass.
I need to get an Agent of Treachery, Tri-lands, and more double lands. (unfortunately im currently deployed and it will take at least a month to get any new cards...)

I don't really know if this helps, however I do see a few alterations you COULD make.

Ob Nixilis, the Hate Twisted ---> Underworld Dreams (not necessary unless you seem to not get to play Ob Nixilis often)

Remove Sage's Row Denizen, as the primary focus of your deck is not to mill, however it could be a good sideboard card.
Remove Vraska, Swarm's Eminence, as you don't get any ETB triggers from her and she doesn't really do much other than create mid-game blockers.

Adding Cavalier of Gales would allow you to draw an immense amount of cards, but might draw you too many cards. You could also add Lazav, the Multifarious to help you find cards you want with his surveil ability. These cards paired with Thassa, Deep-Dwelling creates incredible amounts of value with the surveiling and card draw but might mill you out if you aren't careful.

Not saying this would be a wise choice, however it could be really fun. But you could make a deck around the Amass ability with cards such as Gleaming Overseer, Enter the God-Eternals, Dreadhorde Invasion, Eternal Skylord, and Vizier of the Scorpion. All of them will buff your token as well as having your commander doubling the Amass triggers. When paired with double proliferate triggers as well as maybe adding in some Simic counter moving tricks, such as Combine Guildmage, Repudiate//Replicate, and Hadana's Climb//Winged Temple of Orazca. Roalesk, Apex Hybrid triggers twice when it enters from Yarok #VALUE (I never thought you could do a Voltron deck with a token until now haha.)

Simic Ascendancy also could work by putting pressure on your opponent with the Amass strategy.

You could also add Impervious Greatwurm as a massive creature to abuse and Moss Viper as an early game blocker.

If I think of anything else I will be sure to let you know, sorry for getting carried away. I love deck building, and this seems like a really fun card to build around.

(Sorry if this didn't help!!!)

Well, I'm back already, because I forgot to mention Polukranos, Unchained. He is a great card for removal, as well as a blocker since he can be returned from the graveyard. Paired with the surveil mechanic. You could potentially always have enough cards in your graveyard to return him back to the field.

Another thing I noticed is you land base. Typically in Brawl I try to run 24 lands, however that is 100% up to the person building the deck. Personally I would try to stick with Simic and Golgari dual lands as well as a lot of Islands and Forests, with the addition of some swamps of course. A solid start for a tri-coloured deck would be 6 of each of the basic lands of your commander's colour identity, and 2 of each of the dual lands for you commander's color identity. In this case: 6 Islands, 6 Forests, 6 Swamps, 1 Golgari Guildgate, 1 Jungle Hallow, 1 Simic Guildgate, 1 Thornwood Falls, 1 Dimir Guildgate, and 1 Dismal Backwater. The triomes aren't a necessity, but could be useful in the deck if you maybe took out 3 of the dual lands and replaced them with 1 triome and 2 utility lands, such as Rogue's Passage(to make a creature unblockable) and probably a Command Tower.

The last thing I forgot about was Risen Reef. I'm honestly ashamed I forgot about this gem. Risen Reef + Yarok + Thassa = VALUE. You could potentially be putting out 5 lands per turn at the maximum when this bad boy comes out and drawing 3 cards per turn reguardless with him out.

(Again, sorry if these suggestions don't help. But I love deck building!)

Well, I'm back already, because I forgot to mention Polukranos, Unchained. Sicne you get a trigger from Yarok, he enters as a powerful 12/12 for a mere 4 mana.

Sorry, that's not true. The counters on Polukranos don't come from a triggered ability. It's still a good creature, but doesn't interact with Yarok.
12/07/2019: Replacement effects are unaffected by Yarok’s ability. For example, a creature that enters the battlefield with one +1/+1 counter on it won’t receive an additional +1/+1 counter.

The suggestions definitely help, sage's  row denizen definitely can go as hes really not doing much here.
I like the idea of risen reef and a friend of my actually pulled it from the booster box, so i might be able to get it for a trade.
Simic Ascendancy would be pretty silly, as one of my bump options for thassa is Pollenbright Druid.. might have to buy a single of him.

im surprised you dont like Vraska, Swarm's Eminence though. Shes creates some good pressure with my deathtouch creatures.
If players dont want my deathtouch creatures to ramp up, they have to let their guys die.
If they eat the damage to save their creatures, i get a +1/+1 counter, then i use pollenbright druid to add two more!

Making a deck around amass was an idea i had, but it seems most of the cards i have to have amass are red... which is sad.

Ah I see where you're taking the Vraska concept. You were mainly focused on the passive ability instead of her -2. That makes a lot more sense. If you're going for something like that, you could probably get away with Knight of the Ebon Legion as well. Maybe add in Manifold Key and another utility Artifact to make him unblockable and let him grow with 2 counters each time he deals combat damage. Then they'd have a growing threat to worry about first before dealing with the 2 or 3 other deathtouch creatures you have. I hadn't thought of using Vraska like that, but it makes sense!
