Chulane Creature Storm EDH - suggestions wanted
« on: August 25, 2020, 08:13:01 pm »
Hi!! I have a Chulane, Teller of Tales deck which is definitely my strongest deck, but I want to make sure it is as optimised as possible, so I'm looking for advice on any cards which you think can be improved.

If you think that a card in the deck could be swapped for a better card please tell me which card you think I could take out and what to replace it with. A reasonable budget is required. For example Gaea's Cradle would obviously get in the deck but I'm not made of money. I'm prepared to spend about £10-15 on a card if it can have big big big impact on the deck. The sideboard are 2 cards that I'm saving for currently so no need to suggest those 2 - Enlightened Tutor and Noble Hierarch.

To give you context here is how the deck wins: it's a creature storm deck. the idea is to play as many creatures as possible in a turn to draw into more creatures and put more lands into play. The deck goes (essentially) infinite with Shrieking Drake bouncing itself and being re-cast over and over again, or with another bounce effect such as Temur Sabertooth or Chulane's own ability combining with Intruder Alarm to untap all my mana dorks every time I cast a creature.

Once the storm has started the win cons are either Aetherflux reservoir or Thassa's Oracle.

Looking forward to your advice.

Hey and welcome!

I'm not going to do all your work for you, so I'm just going to drop a few cards and you can cut for them if you want to.

Basically you're trying to break parity as efficiently as possible so anything that helps that goal is probably in order. Another haste enabler for when you're trying to keep the mana train going and for protection the good old Lightning Greaves, basically does the same thing as Concordant Crossroads for you since you can swap it around and protects Chulane outside of your turns for example. Doubling Cube works for all your mana things and while it's a bit expensive in the real world it's not that different from the CR. Some other mana doublers are also worth considering. Since you haven't jammed the deck full of tutors I'd imagine that's not the route you want to go, but there's power there if you want it. Oh and Biomancer's Familiar makes Chulane and Temur Sabertooth bounce cheaper and it's a creature.

I can understand the appeal for using creature-based ramp like Gold Myr and Gilded Goose, as they also draw cards later in the game, but wouldn't stuff like Boreal Druid and Wild Growth still make better choices?

Thanks for your reply I appreciate your idea. In reality boreal Druid could be better than gold myr however I normally need dorks that provide computer mana as there are not many colorless creatures. The enchantment is probably not strong enough for a slot because I have ways of untapping all creatures to get repeatable mana from them but there is only 1 way to untap lands so having 1extra mana doesn’t seem as powerful.

Just to note, you have a lot of options that are better than the Myrs. For example, Drover of the Mighty, Gemhide Sliver, Harabaz Druid, and Manaweft Sliver are all just objectively better than the Myrs. While they fit better into tribal decks, they are still 2 CMC dorks that add 1 mana of any color to your mana pool. Avacyn's Pilgrim & Fyndhorn Elves are a couple good 1 CMC dorks, if you are interested in more. Lastly, Somberwald Sage & Faeburrow Elder are really good here as they goes mana neutral with themselves (like your 1 CMC dorks). I think some of your subpar dorks like the Myrs, Humble Naturalist, and Llanowar Scout could go out.

While I would usually be inclined to agree with you, Morg, that they might want to run some mana rocks/green ramp instead of dorks, their gameplan is to repeat cast a bunch of dorks to storm through their deck. Instead of including ramp that isn't hosed by boardwipes, I suggest running more protection. You already have a few counterspells for protection, but Heroic Intervention, Arcane Denial, Flawless Maneuver, and Unbreakable Formation are some more good options.

Hope these suggestions help!
