Cards that steal from other people's libraries and graves
« on: August 28, 2020, 01:53:19 pm »
Hi forums!

I'm going to put together a theft deck and I don't want to make it as salt inducing as possible so I'm looking for cards that let me cast/steal things from outside of people's hands and boards. This means I'm looking for cards like Bribery. These cards seem to be incredibly hard to search for on Scryfall so I'm wondering what kind of search words or cards I could use.

Thanks for your time!

Morganator put out a good list!

There's the artifact version of Bribery also, called Acquire

Edit: oh graves as well! The new Dredge the Mire and the older Necromancy, Dance of the Dead, Animate Dead. Couple of mass effects: Rise of the dark realms, Command the Dreadhorde and I guess Necromantic Selection also applies :D

Dire Fleet Daredevil
Mindleecher
Hedonist's Trove
Eternal Dominion

On Gatherer I selected to search on text and used the phrases "exile from/search opponent's library/graveyard  you may cast".  Trying variations of this may find more.

I know of a super dumb janky card that does this kind of thing! Surprise!

Thought Dissector.

Hot damn, there are few things I love more in Magic that some of the dumb artifact rares from Mirrodin block. So much jank.

Also, there are things like
Geth, Lord of the Vault
Mnemonic Betrayal

And the best option of all

Eternal Dominion

Epic.

Chainer, Dementia Master is repeatable from the graveyard.  Infernal Denizen does some pretty great repeatable theft, but at a very steep cost.  I run him in my Mairsil, the Pretender deck, though, so once he's caged, I can just tap to steal all I want.  You'll want a Blatant Thievery as well if you're usually playing multi-player.

Wow, thank you so much! How did you find all these cards if I may ask?

Pretty sure I typed in something like "Cast spell opponent" and then added hand, library, or graveyard to the end. You end up getting cards with prowess and stuff like that, but it's easy to just ignore them.

Hmm.. what about Hostage Taker?
It "just" steals from the board, but I think she's still worth mentioning.

@Moganator: you can also exclude words with a "-" before it. E.g. "-prowess" for cards that doesn't have the keyword prowess. That may help thinning out for broad searches.
You say Prison Cell, I hear 'Holiday'.

These are all great cards! I think I'm able to put a deck together using these. Fantastic! Thank you everyone for contributing.

It That Betrays might also be considered an "Annihilator card stealer" as everything that's nontoken can be "stollen" including cards that player sacrifice for triggering an effect. I gave mine to a friend with Tron deck, but it might be useful for you as well.
