How Many Lands in Commander Decks?
« on: October 13, 2020, 09:03:20 pm »
Hello,

i am relative new to the commander format but I like it a lot. In n my Playgroup the more experienced players recommend at least 39 Lands better 40 or 41. But I recognized that in many decklists here but also mtggoldfish there are very different numbers of Lands, the go even down to 32.

What are your Opinion and Recommendations. Would be nice if you share.

Best, Arcanist.

I've got some reading for you!

Having said that I think the most common advise is 36-37 lands with 10 ramp sources. That should add up to a total of 45-50 mana sources in a deck. Generally speaking the lower the curve the fewer lands you can run. My Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy runs 28 lands but its average converted mana cost is around 1.5. Once you get to landfall decks or other lands matter builds you'll start seeing 40+ lands. It all really depends on what you're doing and how you're going about it. But generally you don't see anything below 30 or above 40.

I usually start my deck building with 34 lands.  And then I make sure I have a minimum of 6 low cost mana ramp.  Low cost is CMC 3 or less for a casual deck, 2 or less for a more competetive deck.  And then another 4 sources of ramp that could be higher CMC or are situational (Thran Dynamo, Black Market, Carpet of Flowers).

Then I play the deck a couple times and adjust from there.
Happy Brewing!

What the guys in your playgroup say is reasonable. If you are only new to commander and experienced in other formats like modern, just take it like this:
Commonly you play a 60-card deck (if it's not aggro or control) with 24 land which would be 40%. If you play 40% lands in your commander deck it would make 39-40 lands.  ;)
