I've seen cards like choke and boil at FNM and it helps against the mirror match

so im having some real trouble against lantern control. i know it is a bad match up for merfolk but lantern has been taking top at my LGS for weeks now and its getting old lol.

heres my sideboard strategy:
+3 echoing truth
+2 negate
+2 hurkyls recall
+2 wizard's retort
-4 spreading seas
-2 dismember
-3 master of waves

i think the sideboard strategy is solid but im still not sure how to play against lantern. should i play conservatively and hold up counter magic while playing creatures when i can or should i be more aggresive and hope i draw a bounce spell for the ensnaring bridge.

Thanks man. Still getting used to the modern Meta. I'm thinking of main deck I g the counterspells and putting dismember in the side. I usually side it out against most decks

FNM Results

Round 1: 2-1
This was against valakut shift. wasnt very good game one but post board i didnt have too much trouble winning the next two

Round 2: 2-1
This was against B/R hollow one. game one i had to mulligan down to 5 and it was down hill from there but the next two games master of waves and tidebinder mage FTW.

Round 3: 1-2
This was against absant company. i was not ready to face this deck. he did infinite damage, gained infinite life and had an infinite amount of 1/1 deathtouch snakes.

Round 4: 2-1
This was aginst R/B pyromancer. This round went well post board. Side in a bunch of counterspells and master of waves came in for the win.

So pretty successful night. finally went 3-1 and out of my prize packs i pulleda fatal push, heart of kiran, and a foil spire of industry and out of my pre release pack i pulled a foil karn, scion of urza.

FNM results

Round 1:
this was against a mono red burn deck. i havent had much practice against burn but it was a good match up for me. tidebinder mage and master of waves pretty much sealed the game for me and the spreading seas on his one land was also nice. i won 2-1

Round 2:
This was against a living end deck. ill admit my ignorance to how cascade works was probably my downfall in this matchup. i thought that by countering the spell that had cascade would counter the spell and the cascade. sadly i was wrong. the games were still fairly close i was able to get him to 5 or less both games but then living end would hit and then it was over. i lost 0-2

Round 3:
this was against a grixis deathshadow and it was probably my favorite game. On game 3 he had 4 life and 3 5/6 goyfs while i had 4 2/2 and 16 life. we were at a standstill for about 6 turns until i was finally able to draw the lord of atlantis and island walk in for the win. i won 2-1

Round 4:
This was a very interesting home brew deck. so he would use borderposts for mana instead of lands, have greater gargadon suspended and then cascade into restore balance to effectively wipe my field. he also had plainswalkers like jace, the mindsculptor and gideon of the trials as backup. i probably could have won the match but i misplayed and counterspelled the wrong spell but it was a good game eitherway. i lost 1-2

Still trying to break that 2-2 barrier thats been holding me back. i think the main deck is solid as it is i just need to work on my sideboarding strategy. i guess theres always next week

So last night did not go in my favor. i went 1-3. I play tested the smugglers copter and the few times i was able to use it it was good but its just too inconsistent for me and i think the slots would be better filled by more counter magic or merfolk. i might reconsider putting phantasmal image back in but well see

Match 1: 2-1
This was against a pretty good jund player but i expected jund so i was ready. Spreading seas to screw his mana and island walk in for the win.

Match 2: 0-2
This felt like a homebrew deck. it was based on creatures with ETB and LTB effects. one was a 5/3 creature that gave him 5 life when it entered and a 3/3 token when it leaves so all my cards against creatures were pretty useless. it also didnt help that game 1 i got flooded and game 2 i kept a greedy hand and didnt get my second land drop until around turn 8

Match 3: 1-2
This was a r/b/g homebrew dragon deck. i figured this was going to be an easy win but he was able to consistently ramp up to like 10 mana on turn
or with cards like fertile ground, utopia sprawl, arbor elf and garuuk. the games were close but i just couldnt deal with the big ass dragons

Match 4:  1-2
This was by far the funnest match. This was against b/w/u humans. all 3 games came down to the wire. i lost game 3 because i kept my aether vial on 2 and drew kopala with 2 lands. i went in for lethal and he used dismember against my master of waves and killed me next turn. if only i would have put aether vial on 3 lol

overall not happy with the results but im getting better at utilizing my sideboard. what to put in and what to take out. i was also able to snag kira, great glass spinner and some dismembers so it wasnt a complete loss

it wasnt easy. master of waves and spreading seas won it for me. almost makes me want to try the 8 seas version running 4 seas claim and 4 spreading seas. not alot of blue being ran at my LGS so it could be good

some more FNM results

game 1:
this was against a b/w eldrazi type deck. he used alot of creatures with ETB effects like flikcerwisp and others and used the eldrazi lands with eldrazi displacer to basically blink my board out of existence i lost 1-2

game 2:
this was against a g/r eldrazi i think. my spreading seas kept him from showing me anything and i beat him easily. 2-0

game 3:
this was against a b/w/u control deck. i won game one easily but the next two games he had just way too much creature destruction and hand disruption and i couldnt recover. i lost 1-2

game 4:
this was against a jund deck. Once again the spreading seas mana screwed him and good ol master of waves came in for the finish. i won 2-1

so far the deck is doing ok especially with only having one aether vial and no kira, great glass spinner. i had mild success with the phantasmal images so i think im going to keep them in and see how it goes. kopala helped a little bit but kira would have definitely won me games. overall another 2-2 so im not too disappointed

yea the kopala is just in there until i can get my hands on kira. I've been thinking about putting the spell pierce in the side and main decking the wings of velis vel. i haven't seen any merfolk decks run it but I've had mild success with it.

so i took the deck to FNM yesterday ( minus the mutavaults ) and i went 2-2.

game 1:
this was against R/G tron and both games i was able to get him down to 5 but then karn, ugin or ulamog would hit and i couldnt come back. lost 0-2

game 2:
this was against a r/w/u control deck. i did good early game but i could not keep up with all the creature removal he had and i lost 0-2

game 3:
this was against a budget mono white goat deck. i won 2-0

game 4:
this was against a g/b tron. a lucky aether vial draw and spreading seas barely got me the W. won the match 2-1
