Title: EDH players- what's your best deck?
Post by: WWolfe on March 26, 2019, 01:35:37 pm
So which deck is your best deck? Why do you consider it your best deck? Higher than normal win %, most outside the box deck, deck that guarantees the most fun play experience?

For me it's my Sidisi, Brood Tyrant (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sidisi%2C+Brood+Tyrant) deck. It hits both the higher than normal win % and deck that guarantees the most fun play experience marks. I track my wins and losses with each deck and it wins a little over 42% of the time and does so in a number of ways (Aphetto Alchemist (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Aphetto+Alchemist) + Mesmeric Orb (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mesmeric+Orb) with Sidisi out, Gravecrawler (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gravecrawler) + Phyrexian Altar (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Phyrexian+Altar) + one of the Blood Artist (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Blood+Artist) effects with another zombie out, straight swarm, among a few others). I can play it 5 times in a session, likely win 2-3 of them and do so in a different way each time. Several of the people in my normal play circle enjoy playing against it to see if they can beat it.

My best deck is probably by Tatyova, Benthic Druid (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tatyova%2C+Benthic+Druid) deck.  Mana ramp, bounce spells and land searching.  Then it ends (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Ends) with legions of krakens, leviathans and sea creatures.  It's the first deck I really pulled out all the stops when building, and I feel the most pride in the deck.

Best Deck: Captain Sisay (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Captain+Sisay). She is fast (consistent turn 4 win), adaptable, and requires a fair amount of skill to play. I first built her as a toolbox stax deck, but she has gradually become more of a combo deck (due to a less powerful meta). To be fair, this was a close call, as Edric, Spymaster of Trest (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Edric%2C+Spymaster+of+Trest) is a powerful control deck, but has trouble with consistency.

Favorite Deck: Krenko, Mob Boss (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Krenko%2C+Mob+Boss). Mono-red is a huge restriction, so I've had to come up with some creative ways of getting around those limitations. This was my first Commander deck, and I still have it to this day. I also think it's the best Krenko deck in existence, but that's just me being pretentious.

Most Fun: The Scarab God (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=The+Scarab+God). I always need to be aware of what's in everyone's graveyard, and I've done some pretty weird plays to avoid board wipes and enchantments. The deck is also very incremental, so it works fine for more casual metas.

Hardest Build: Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Vaevictis+Asmadi%2C+the+Dire). This was kinda my own fault, because I based the deck around Primal Surge (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Primal+Surge), which means 99% of the deck was permanents. But I absolutely insisted on still using instant-speed interaction (In the form of cards like Caustic Caterpillar (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Caustic+Caterpillar) and Seal of Doom (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Seal+of+Doom)). Also, Vaevictis was a huge target for removal, so protecting him was hard.

I have actual stats I could show for these decks, but I don't think anyone is interested in that.

I'm not a huge EDH player, so my range is a little limited.

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Momir+Vig%2C+Simic+Visionary) - combo deck that revolves around tapping Experiment Kraj (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Experiment+Kraj) a lot. The deck is mostly ramp spells, then tries to get Kraj out right before my turn so it can tap. It tends to just go infinite in a bunch of weird ways.

Krenko, Mob Boss (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Krenko%2C+Mob+Boss) - pulls this at the M13 prerelease and have been running it ever since. Wins by going wide and pinging things. Doesn't *need* Krenko but definitely helps it perform faster.

This makes me happy! My favorite thing about Deckstats is the stats!

Before I show it to you I need to explain expected win percentage. It is the sum of my base chance of winning for every game with that commander, and then divided by the games played by that commander. So if it's a three player game the base chance is 0.33, a four player game is 0.25, a five player game is 0.20, etc. For example, Lavinia played in a 3 player game, a 4 player game, and a five player game. (0.33+0.25+0.20)/3= 0.26 or 26%. I should also mention that some of these commanders (namely Kynaios and Tiro, Krenko, and Edric) frequently play in games of 5 to 7 players, but secret partners are involved. In some cases they won with a helping hand, but the expected win percentage was adjusted accordingly.

Now for the data! I started recording stats back in 2017, but it was only for the cEDH league at my local game store. Now that the league has gone (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gone) belly-up, I'm recording all games that I play. This is the current 2019 data.

NOTES:

So I guess, by looking at the data... Kynaios and Tiro is my best deck.

While I haven't tracked stacks on them, my most fun deck is:
https://deckstats.net/decks/75927/602438--edh-armed-masses/en

I have had opponents mock me the first time they play against Anafenza, then I watch in amused mirth as they get rolled under the hordes.  The deck has had a few small upgrades since I last updated the list, but in a nutshell, an army of pseudo-or-actual vigilance (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Vigilance), every growing creatures makes me a lot harder target, especially when I can boardwipe creatures post combat at no creature loss.  I don't know why Anafenza is viewed as an ineffective general, but I become a target very quickly with her on the field.

Now as to my best deck, this one has enough of a reputation that I become a kill on sight target when they see the general.

https://deckstats.net/decks/75927/695226-edh-mental-overload-nekusar-/en

Need to put in a Grafted Exoskeleton (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Grafted+Exoskeleton), a few cards left to acquire (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Acquire) for total lich (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Lich) evilness, but I started playing Nekusar as a general when he first came out and everyone thought he was a nice sidecard.

A deck I am working on is led by Thraximundar (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Thraximundar), and is a deck focused on "please kill my creatures."  Just got a few cards for infinite sacrifice loop.

Morganator.. the problem with Kynaios is that it's not a cEDH deck and not in a cEDH meta. This plus table politics definitely skews the estimated win % and stuff in ways you can't really control or predict (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Predict).. welcome to casual Magic.

My Best & Favourite is The Locust God (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=The+Locust+God). I don't have the numbers offhand, but I would say it wins more often than it loses by a fair margin. This is speaking in terms of casual and no one bringing super expensive decks to the table (no one has alpha cards or power 9, etc.). I've only played my new Rakdos, the Showstopper (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Rakdos%2C+the+Showstopper) deck once, but already had a blast. I don't think it will take overtake TLG anytime soon, but it left a fun first impression.

the problem with Kynaios is that it's not a cEDH deck and not in a cEDH meta.

This is something I've worried about. I was always fine when the competitive league was running, because I knew that everyone was playing the deck as best as possible. The data also shows this a little. You'll notice that my competitive decks (Krenko, Edric, Sisay (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sisay)) have higher win rates than my casual decks (Scarab God, Mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra), K&T), with one exception. And that one exception is bothering me. It is quite possible that K&T is too powerful for most casual metas, but it never feels like a landslide (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Landslide) victory, like it sometimes does with Sisay (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sisay) or Edric.

This plus table politics definitely skews the estimated win % and stuff in ways you can't really control or predict (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Predict).

These don't affect the expected value. In the same way that I'm expected to get heads 50% of the time on a coin flip, or I'm expected to roll a 6 on a die 16.7% of the time, I'm expected to win a four-player game of commander 25% of the time assuming that me winning is determined (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Determined) by chance alone. Things that affect the outcome could be a coin with two heads, a loaded die, or politics in commander; things outside the factors of chance.

But when most of my win ratios close to double what is expected, something is up. Not chance, but other factors, like deck-building, certain metas, politics, or just being a skilled commander player.

Yes but politics are huge in casual and u cant predict (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Predict) or assume them.. sometimes theyre completely unrelated to the actual game

This is absolutely true. I've been attacked for making a lord windgrace (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Lord+Windgrace) deck before my friend did, and so he can't do it. We try to avoid building around the same commander in our group. I've also killed people because they took too damn long in the bathroom. If you're an engineer, I might target you first.

My all time favorite/best deck I've built would be my Muldrotha Toolbox deck...
https://deckstats.net/decks/121107/1162616-muldrotha-toolbox/en

If you check out the deck page, I've outlined all the Combos and Synergies with the deck. The Deck, within my playgroup and LGS, Won 85% of the time (Out of 50 consecutively tracked games).

My best Deck is my Lazav, the Multifarious (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Lazav%2C+the+Multifarious) Voltron deck: https://deckstats.net/decks/113264/1165882-lazavicious-voltron/en

Average CMC is 2.5, it has 8 tutors, a crazy amount of looting to dig through my deck as fast as possible, and the commander is super hard to remove. It's fast, resilient, deadly. I just love it. It's not exactly competitive, I'd have to change it to a combo deck that can kill the whole table for that, but this deck can make me archenemy and people are scared to play against it.

My Favorite deck is my Teysa deck, which I've recently built: https://deckstats.net/decks/113264/1206082-whealth-debt-death-teysa-orzho/en

Average CMC is 2.8, and it was probably one of the most difficult deck to build; there's lots of good cards for Teysa, and lots of good high-CMC cards I was tempted to add, while I also had to keep an appropriate ratio of sac outlets, sac fodder and pay-offs.

The deck went through a LOT of changes and choices had to be made. Though I gotta say, after a fair amount of play-testing I'm really happy with how the deck is shaping up. It has a lot of early-game plays, generates tons of value, it has answers to threats and can go infinite fairly easily, though this can be avoided when playing more casual games. I also did my best to compensate for Orzhov's weaknesses (draw/ramp) and due to this the deck feels very smooth to play.

Best I would have to say but it isn't fully maximized is Etali, Primal Storm (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Etali%2C+Primal+Storm)

Favorite deck to run because of unpredictability of what will happen is Thantis, the Warweaver (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Thantis%2C+the+Warweaver)  I personally like it because it makes every game different. With this deck I do get what does that do?? Just cards that don't normally see play. Everything from War's Toll (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=War%27s+Toll), Maddening Imp (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Maddening+Imp), Smoke (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Smoke), et-cetra. Just a bunch of jank that works well together and normally helps speed up the game. Adding more jank as I continue to constanly play. Both my playgroups actually enjoy when I do play Thantis.

My personal favorite though is Krav and Regna Life Gain and Drain. Very reliable for me anyway.

Then my favorite budget/casual because it gets bigger quick and surprises my opponents most of the time is Hallar, the Firefletcher (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Hallar%2C+the+Firefletcher).

I don't have any big competitive decks, not that I couldn't have any. Just prefer not to.

Inalla, Archmage Ritualist (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Inalla%2C+Archmage+Ritualist). One of my first EDH decks I bought and modified. It pushes ETBs by copying wizards and has a pretty good win rate. It runs Sower of Temptation (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sower+of+Temptation), Beguiler of Wills (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Beguiler+of+Wills), Master of Waves (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Master+of+Waves), and then copies with Minion Reflector (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Minion+Reflector), Flameshadow Conjuring (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Flameshadow+Conjuring), Panharmonicon (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Panharmonicon), Naban, Dean of Iteration (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Naban%2C+Dean+of+Iteration), and Mirror March (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mirror+March).

How is master of waves (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Master+of+Waves)? I've never played Inalla, but my friend has and his devotion to blue is never to a point where the card is worth running, even if you are getting 2x your devotion to blue.

Mine isn't going to be as nicely formatted as Morganator's, and keep in mind mine is a more casual meta, but here it is...

Sliver Overlord (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sliver+Overlord)...…………………….11-3.....78%
Purphoros, God of the Forge (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Purphoros%2C+God+of+the+Forge).....8-3...…..72%
Skullbriar, the Walking Grave (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Skullbriar%2C+the+Walking+Grave)...15-6.....71%
Karador, Ghost Chieftan………….12-7.....63%
Sidisi, Brood Tyrant (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sidisi%2C+Brood+Tyrant)................27-23...54% (higher than I thought)
Edgar Markov (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Edgar+Markov)...……………………...3-4......42%
Animar, Soul of Elements (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Animar%2C+Soul+of+Elements)………..5-8......38%
Overall...………………………………….82-54....60%

Skullbriar is 11-0 in 1v1 but only 4-6 in multiplayer games, it just makes itself too big a target to survive taking out 3 or more opponents and usually once I take out one or more I become just have too much of a target to take out the remaining players. Sidisi has became a game of archenemy but I'm still able to take out 1 or 2 opponents before going out. The deck has never finished worse than 3rd. Karador is Shadowborn Apostles and holds its own by early explosions. Purphoros I don't play that much, I save it more for play against newer (and I don't know how else to say this) or lesser players. Sliver Overlord (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sliver+Overlord) I only play occassionally, it's a decent deck but not one I really enjoy piloting. Animar is one of those commanders that draws hate as soon as people see him so it having the win% it does kind of surprises me. Edgar is same boat as Animar. These are the only decks I have more than 2 or 3 games with.
Title: Re: EDH players- what's your best deck?
Post by: Morganator 2.0 on April 02, 2019, 06:52:42 pm
So assuming that the multiplayer games with Skullbriar are 4-player games, your expected win percentage with Skullbriar is 38%. It seems like you're in the same spot as me; an abnormally high win percentage. Looking at the deck I can see why it's so powerful in 1vs1.

What I'm more curious about is Purphoros. If this is the deck for new players, why is it so high? Do you think is has something to do with people not interacting with the deck, or is it something else?
Title: Re: EDH players- what's your best deck?

They just don't interact with the deck enough. The deck isn't even meant to be that good. It was a budget challenge deck that I upgraded some afterwards and have kept solely for the purpose of playing against newer players. Almost every time it wins I just shake my head and wonder (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Wonder) why.

My best EDH deck is probably Grenzo, Dungeon Warden (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Grenzo%2C+Dungeon+Warden):
https://deckstats.net/decks/54477/454432-grenzo-s-deck
It can win as soon as turn 3, so it's quite competitive and the idea behind it is quite original.

My best deck was my Mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra) Artifact storm deck.  Loved that deck, but then it evolved in a bit more fun to play version...

...Breya eggs/storm.  Hits similar notes but has better recursion.  It's more fun to play, and to play against.

I also favor my Ramos storm deck and my Vial Smasher/Thrasios landfall/combos

Vaevictis is pretty fun.  Brudiclad might get there once he's tuned right.

Hopefully Mistform Ultimus (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mistform+Ultimus) will be fun but probably not that good, and if I ever build Hazezon...

I'm trying to play Mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra) but i can't finish it, i understand that if the spell is countered  mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra)'s ability triggers and you can put the card into play, but can the opponent attend the mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra) trigger and then counter your spell????????????????????? If it's that i got only nether void (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Nether+Void)!!

Mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra) isn't my best deck, but it can be a fun and challenging deck to play. While Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Vaevictis%20Asmadi%2C%20the%20Dire) is my hardest build, Mishra, Artificer Prodigy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra%2C%20Artificer%20Prodigy&set=TSP) is a close second.

So you are correct, your opponent can wait for Mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra)'s trigger to resolve then counter it. I've found that the best way to use Mishra (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mishra) is with Possibility Storm (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Possibility+Storm) (the newest iteration of the deck is even called "Mishra-bility Storm").

I'm not sure best deck has to necessarily mean the deck that wins the most.

I consider my best deck to be my Feldon of the Third Path (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Feldon+of+the+Third+Path) deck. I am someone that gets bored easily and moves onto other deck ideas fairly quickly. Feldon is the deck that I have kept assembled the longest. It is the deck I have tinkered with the longest and although it doesn't always win, when it does, it does so spectacularly. It is the colour red at its finest, yet feels, on the surface, to be as black as it gets.

That being said, lately, my best deck seems to be my Reyhan, Last of the Abzan (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Reyhan%2C+Last+of+the+Abzan) & Ikra Shadiqi, the Usurper partner deck. It has a decent win streak and it's savagery oftentimes takes my friends - and me - by surprise. And in the oft chance you had a slow start against a fast deck, one swing with Ikra Shadiqi in play and you're back in the game. It also has what I consider to be a funny combo in Fertilid (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Fertilid) and Ob Nixilis, Unshackled (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Ob+Nixilis%2C+Unshackled). I want to try Phyrexian Devourer (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Phyrexian+Devourer) in the deck because that card is hilarious with Reyhan in play.

No, like I said in the first post, best doesn't necessarily mean the one that wins the most. You can consider it your best for any number of reasons.

My Sidisi deck isn't my best deck as far as win % despite winning over 50% of it's games, it's the most fun to play because while having one main win-con (Zombie army swarm), it can get to that point numerous ways.
