Commander Discussion / Re: Do we still use Counterspell?

People will always argue with me, so I'm probably wrong, but I think that Arcane denial is just better than counterspell - especially in a spellslinging deck. It only costs 1 blue pip and draws you two cards for gas. The only downside is that it draws your opponent a card, but let's be honest, it's not that big of a deal. The thing you countered is probably more vital than whatever they're going to draw, and in the end, you end up on top in card advantage. With Counterspell, you equalize.

I think you might be misreading Arcane Denial. YOU draw one card, the OPPONENT draws two. You break even on cards, but the opponent is up one at the end. I like Counterspell because it's a nice, simple, UU and that spell doesn't happen. I include it in basically every blue deck that's not running Mana Drain, Force of Will, etc... and usually even in decks up to 3 colors (assuming one of the other colors is green and I have decent ramp).

That's embarrasing. I have always played it correctly, so I'm not sure what happened there! Slip of the mind I guess - I haven't played a game for a month now (lockdown).

I agree with you. Counterspell is nice and simple - I still run it in my blue / simic decks that have a lot of ramp.

Edit: The fact that I misspelled "embarrassing" makes it even more embarrassing ;D

Jaya was too hard to cast with her triple-red. I'm sorry, Jaya, you're amazing, but you have to go. Also remembered that Flux Channeler exists.

Revision 7

Added/removed cards:
-1 Commander's Sphere
-1 Jaya Ballard
+1 Call the Skybreaker
+1 Flux Channeler

In that case, I would at least suggest switching Colossus of Akros to something different (maybe Gearseeker Serpent, Sojourner's Companion / Myr enforcer, Metalwork Colossus or Cranial Plating if this is in your budget). Colossus of Akros takes very long to be able to attack - he will be a blocker for 10 mana guess. Monstrosity is not affected by the affinity ability of Tezzeret, so you'll play him and won't have enough mana to pump him.

Good idea. He was mainly in there for the possibility of Monstrosity + unblockable from Whirler Rogue, becoming a one-shot in a 20-life format. However, Metalwork Colossus will do a good job of filling its slot at a much lower mana cost.

Oh I see. You didn't tell me about that fix budget. ^^"

Haha quite right. I've added a note in the deck description! ;)

Seat of the Synod and Vault of Whispers

I had them in there before, but we're on a very strict budget. They would be awesome in here, but alas, I decided to put the money towards some of the big beaters.

General Magic / Re: Stranger Things! How do we feel about this one?
« on: October 16, 2021, 12:14:25 pm »
I don’t like this new secret lair by any stretch of the imagination, but there is one improvement over the Walking Dead that I do see…

When I saw the cards from the Walking Dead secret lair, I went, “wow, that’s powerful.” A card like Rick, Steadfast Leader is good enough to slot into - or helm - any Humans tribal commander deck, even if - like me - you’ve never seen tWD and don’t want to.

A distinct change that I see in this Stranger Things secret lair is that the cards are generally a lot less powerful. Sure, Eleven’s ability can be strong, but honestly I’d rather run Obeka to helm a Grixis deck. They seem more like the kind of card that a determined fan of the show could build around, rather than overtly powerful or must-have cards. So, while I hated the first of these Secret Lairs, I’m really indifferent about this one. I don’t think these cards are going to make a huge splash in the community.

Realized that my concentration of instants / sorceries wasn't high enough to be running Epic Experiment, and effects that rely on casting multiple spells in a turn aren't as effective as they could be due to that same fact. So I added some versatility and, you guessed it, even more removal.

Revision 6

Added/removed cards:
-1 Divine Reckoning
-1 Epic Experiment
-1 Monk Class
+1 Beacon Bolt
+1 Farm // Market
+1 Izzet Charm

When originally building the deck, I forgot that Oathbreaker games start at 20 life. I knew the fact, of course, but I did not keep it in mind. I now realise that it is a faster-paced format, and cutting cards with high mana cost and low efficiency is more imperative than ever before.

To protect my own life total, I have traded in more creatures that create tokens off of instant and sorcery casts. Chump blockers and (with Jeskai Ascendancy) very real threats.

Also chucked in a little more targeted removal.

Revision 5

Added/removed cards:
-1 Arcane Melee
-1 Backdraft Hellkite
-1 Goblin Electromancer
-1 Melek, Izzet Paragon
-1 Mind's Desire
-1 Myriad Landscape
-1 Shu Yun, the Silent Tempest
+1 Aetherize
+1 Deekah, Fractal Theorist
+1 Harmonic Prodigy
+1 Metallurgic Summonings
+1 Murmuring Mystic
+1 Ravenform
+1 Young Pyromancer

If you need inspiration for and Oathbreaker deck, try Narset of the Ancient Way with a signature spell of Battle Hymn. This deck is all about cards that say "whenever you cast an instant or sorcery, create a */* (doesn't matter) creature token. Get two of those out plus Narset, and you can cast battle hymn for infinite mana and infinite tokens.

That sounds cool, and I'm certainly playing Jeskai, but I'm not looking for infinite combos. An interesting suggestion, just my personal playstyle tends towards having fun without exploiting combos.

EDHREC has an Oathbreaker site that works exactly the way EDHREC works. It never came out of beta but it works well.

https://oathbreaker.edhrec.com/

This is great, thanks! I'm sure it'll be a huge help to me and my friends as we build our first Oathbreaker decks.

Did more playtesting, and kept getting mana flooded. Chipped down the lands but kept the ramp. Also generally increased the amount of instants and sorceries for MAXIMUM GAS

Revision 4

Added/removed cards:
-1 Jace's Sanctum
+1 Fact or Fiction
+1 Leadership Vacuum
+1 Sejiri Shelter // Sejiri Glacier
+1 Silundi Vision // Silundi Isle

Changed amounts:
-2 Island
-1 Mountain

This positive talk of Oathbreaker has convinced me to convince my friends to give it a shot. We're getting out of lockdown in a week and a half, and now we're planning to build some Oathbreaker decks to have some planeswalker-filled fun.

I don't know about the others yet (one is considering using his copy of Teferi, Time Raveler for an Azorius stax build), but I'm building Jeskai Spellslinging with Narset of the Ancient Way + Inspired Ultimatum for a generally good time. Building on a strict budget was surprisingly easy because of the 60-card decks, rather than the 100 cards that I'm used to.

Has anyone got more inspiration for fun Oathbreaker builds they've done? What is the general consensus on the format?

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Prosper Gatling Gun Spellslinger
« on: October 15, 2021, 06:33:33 am »
I might just be blind, but I don't see a Storm-Kiln Artist in there. I definitely recommend it: Making one extra treasure back for each shot of the "gatling gun" will accellerate you insanely fast, as well as let you chain together 2-cmc spells instead of just 1. On top of that, te Storm-Kiln Artist can get insanely high-powered with enough Treasure. Definitely worth the slot imo.
