Deck Reviews / Re: [Standard] Mono Green Stompy

I am afraid i will have to disagree. Rhonas's Last Stand was too much of a liability last standard, but with Llanowar elves, it normally means just good value. also late game a 5/4 for 2 mana is still a good rate. As for carnage tyrant it doesn't fit well with the rest of the deck, 5 mana is kinda where i want to be at the end of the game so if i'm adding carnage tyrant I need to up my land count, if i up my land count explore is more about drawing cards than getting big fatties on the battlefield. an additional concern is nissa has usually been played on 1 and up ticked to 3 in testing... and then to five if i don't find steal leaf champion, rhonas, the indomitable or jadelight ranger, which allows for gearhulk to be found. this leaves nissa on 5, i mean its possible i tick to 7 and find a tyrant.

I've added him for now, but i feel i may be better served with a spell like natures way, to clear the way for my beaters, carnage tyrant just feels like he'll trade with a couple 3/x's

The deck you posted is definitely more of a ramp deck. i'm more of midrange deck

I am tempted to add some number of monstrous onslaught now youve mentioned them though

Thank you for  your input

Mono Green Stompy

Ok, so technically Stompy, this is just a very simple but effective.
combination of nissa and explore creatures work fantastically well.
Magical christmas land is:
Turn 1, Botanical Sanctum > Llanowar Elves
Turn 2, Forest > Nissa, Steward of Elements (+2, having Steel Leaf Champion as second card)
Turn 3, Forest, > Nissa, Steward of Elements (0, putting Steel Leaf Champion on the battlefield) cast 2 Rhonas's Last stand, 16 power on the board turn 3
...
just in time to swing into settle the wreckage
...
Play Ghalta, Primal Hunger with Blossoming Defense back up, before they settle you obviously

But I've got a problem... and his name is Rishkar, Peema Renegade it always feels lack lustre when i draw him. He just doesnt fit in the deck but I'm unsure what the best alternative would be.
My considerations would be Rhonas's Monument Hadana's Climb or possibly Mouth // Feed but nothing feels like, bingo.. thats just want i want... any help?

also tempted to drop the ripjaw raptor so there's essentially 3 slots available. please... please help!

scarab god sultai delirium

Using the filter cards to put cards into the graveyard splendid reclamation brings back the land for value and the scarab god does the same for creatures.#
The weakness of the deck is graveyard hate, which is unfortunate given that zombies is a thing as is the several cards that hate on graveyards that was printed in HoU. But unlike zombies we have access to blue mana... and along with it Disallow to stop a lot of that graveyard hate
I'm tempted to put in nimble obstructionist for the same reason.
also I'm unsure what would be better Gnarlwood Dryad or Thing in the Ice. Gnarlwood dryad does a bit more against midrange decks, and works well with The Scarab God. Thing in the Ice however deals a lot better with Oketra's Monument decks and other swarm decks
As for the other cards in the maybe board, i wanted to fit them in, and some were in the original build of this but have been taken out as the decks changed... still looking for a way to squeeze them in.

Right, for anyone following this threat (probably not likely but thought i would post anyway. before the tourney I took out the woodland wanderer from the SB, and put in den protector. that was the only real change.

I took the win goings against midrange abzan, jund dragons, B/R dragons, and finally naya tokens

Match 1 against Abzan was a tough match-up, first game he took off me, just couldn't get going, didn't have the answers, sideboarded in removal and took out the heralds of the pantheon. game 2 looked like I was going to lose, until i finally stabilized on around 10 life, managed to eek out the win. game 3 was bad because he got mana screwed.

Match 2 against Jund Dragons, was a weird one, basically he was playing BR dragons and splashed for den protector it seemed. Nothing much to say, game one was a little tough, but i manage to get the win by sheer luck... drawing the right spells at the right time. game two just went bad for him, as my sideboard loves to face br dragons.

Match 3 against BR Dragons was more of a challenge, this opponent usually beats me, and when game one came around there was no difference, i got trounced. but after sideboarded game 2 and 3 went a very different way, every time she played a dragon... dead. in game three i began to feel sorry for her as much as she played spells, she couldn't get anything to stick.

Match 4 unfortuntely this game was a tie, me and my opponent are very good friends so we took the draw and split the prizes. We did have 1 game before we decided to call it a draw... a game that lasted nearly 40 minutes. we both were pretty on form, but both he and i made crucial mistakes, mine was not putting deathtouch/leathal on my 2 guys, instead i almost instinctively called drain. which is something that needs to be watched in this deck... sooooo many triggers.
it came down to me flipping nissa and when i plus 1 her, if i get a fetchland my opponent dies from the drain from double retreat to hagra. it happened... basically i got the draw i needed, and while it doesnt show a lot of skill when your top decking, it sure does feel good.
his mistake was he could of killed nissa before she flipped. if he had done that, he probably could of turned the corner as he had about 5 creatures out against my 0... one of them being wingmate roc which would of helped him recover.

overall the changes to the deck moving forward will be removing 3 herald of the pantheon... as they litterally did nothing... i managed to draw 1, in my 9 games, he hit play then immediately died. it may make your enchantments cheaper but its not worth it. in its place i'll be putting in den protector, which i feel will do a better job at getting cards like painful truths back, as sometimes i ran out of gas.
Probably add in to the sideboard 2 radiant purge. i am tempted with despise, the only reason i don't want to do that, is my shambling vents are often my turn 1 play. maybe transgress the mind?

Deck Reviews / Re: [Standard] UR Izzet

jeskai prowess is more likely to happen in my opinion, stormchaser mage, abbot of keral keep, monastery swiftspear, monastery mentor and all the cantrips, expediate, defiant strike, slip through space.

the problem with just doing izzet is your limiting yourself to say the best 18 cards of blue and 18 cards of red... and white has a lot to offer. maybe this is preference, but i believe while we have easy access to mana fixing 3-4 colour decks will be a cut above the rest because they have access to the best cards from 3-4 colours rather than just 2

I seem to of rambled there, please forgive me.

I would advise to wait till oath of the gatewatch... theres some really good black eldrazi and i feel this deck would be better if it focus'd on the eldrazi aspect of it. obviously some cards which are decent could stay in, roast zulaport cutthroat. but if you get some of the better eldrazi cards, wasteland strangler and the like, it would do wonders for your deck. obviously your just starting out, so you dont want to invest heavily in a hobby until you know you like it.

my advice, goto the pre-release at your local game shop (if you have one, and theres still space) and go to any drafts you can find, this will do wonders for your deck building skills, playing abilities, and most importantly this will increase your card library. and if you already have an idea what kind of deck you want for standard, you can draft those specific colours.

Deck Reviews / Re: [Standard] Jonathan's basic deck

Honestly not sure what your planning on doing with this deck... it just seems a random selection of blue and white cards... with kiora smushed in there with no way of paying for her. is this your first deck? if so, i recommend finding a theme... eldrazi, flyers, just something to form the basis of the deck. and then an end goal. what do you want your deck to do (besides win) i.e. do you want to control your opponents board until you can plan a big creature on the board and win that way, or do you want to spam the board with lots of little creatures to try and go wide.

hope i've helped atleast somewhat

Deck Reviews / [Standard] Abzan retreat
« en: Enero 05, 2016, 05:16:51 pm »
hi everyone, if you would kindly take a look at my deck and offer any improvements that would be great.

http://deckstats.net/decks/48859/393114-abzan-retreat-/en

The deck primarily focus's around the BFZ retreats, namely hagra, emeria and kazandu. playing lands is essentially playing spells hence the number of lands, thought my deck doesnt run the 32 lands normally seen in this build ive also put in a fair few plainswalkers;
Nissa, Vastwood Seer is amazing in this deck, when shes flips her plus one does so much, possibly 2 landfall triggers a turn, maybe more with fetches. and her -2 ability making me a blocker is nothing to sniff at either.
Ob Nixilis Reignited is there for the card draw, granted I have plenty of card draw in the form of painful truths, but card draw never hurt anyone, I was considering dropping a quarantine field for another copy of ob nixilis. I can get so much value from quarantine field that its a difficult cut. Thoughts?
Gideon, Ally of Zendikar this actually seems like a win more card in my deck. I originally had it my sideboard but it seemed like every match i was side boarding it in.
Sorin, Solemn Visitor is also a win more card. but with the lifelink I feel like I need this more than gideon

my other 5 creatures (besides nissa) are 2 Oblivion Sower which is too good to cut imo. and 3 Herald of the Pantheon which... is frustrating. its either the best card in the deck when you see it in your opening hand, or something that would of been better being a land mid-late game. Turn 4 is when my deck turns on without him... and it seems too slow to get going. the obvious replacement for this is Den Protector. A lot of decks are running this, because the combo with retreat to kazandu is pretty big. but with my deck already being pretty slow, removing my only turn 2 play might just kill it altogether.
What are your thoughts on this? is there something you would rather see cut to fit the den protectors in?

Thank you for any advice and help you can offer me

Deck Reviews / Mardu Aristocrats

http://deckstats.net/decks/48859/384473-mardu-aristocrats

So this is my aristocrats deck. I played a similar deck when BFZ first hit (B/W rally) and for a few weeks after, and its remained a top favourite. Now that I'm returning to team zulaport O fancied a little change up... this was easier said than done

Im considering changing gideon for kytheon to keep alesha safe.
