Title: Favorite 2 or 3 Card Combos
Post by: KouriNick on June 07, 2016, 06:58:04 pm
Hello Everyone! I've been thinking about card combos lately, and was just wondering what everyone elses favorites were. These don't have to be "i win the game" combos, they could just be a couple cards that interact really well together in a way way better than any of the individual cards would suggest.

Open to any format.

For example, in Draft or Sealed, my favorite combo is Call the Bloodline (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Call+the+Bloodline) + Sanitarium Skeleton (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sanitarium+Skeleton) (and + indulgent aristocrat (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Indulgent+Aristocrat) if possible). It doesn't win the game by itself, but is one of those combos that satisfying and makes each card in it much better than it would be otherwise.

For Draft I really enjoy the Call the Bloodline (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Call+the+Bloodline) + Sanitarium Skeleton (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sanitarium+Skeleton) Combo, I've won two drafts by picking those cards early on and building around it.

I also enjoy another combo that isn't the best but I find it fun it draft and for kitchen table games. Rancid Rats (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rancid+Rats) + Rabid Bite (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rabid+Bite), it's a mean combo that can kill any creature and opponent has, only problem is it's a one time deal.

My favorite 3 cards combo has to be Palladium Myr (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Palladium+Myr), and 2 Myr Galvanizer (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Myr+Galvanizer) 's. Infinite mana, in colorless is useful almost anywhere.

Sliver Overlord (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sliver+Overlord) + Mana Echoes (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mana+Echoes). Connor that with a few good, quick tutors and you can get your entire Sliver army on the board. This works best, for me, in my EDH deck with the Overlord as my general, but you could make it work in modern.

I Like Presence of Gond (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Presence+of+Gond) + Intruder alarm (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Intruder+Alarm). Infinite 1/1 elves.  :o Check out my U/G elf deck. Also with an Elvish Archdruid (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Elvish+Archdruid) or an Elvish Mystic (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Elvish+Mystic) you got yourself infinite Mana as well. Good topic.

I've got a few combos that I found I like in the new Shadows over innistrad:

1) Sleep paralysis (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sleep+Paralysis) + murderous compulsion (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Murderous+Compulsion)
2) Spectral shepard + rattlechains (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rattlechains)
3) morkrut necropod (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Morkrut+Necropod) + crawling sensation (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Crawling+Sensation)
4) mad prophet (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mad+Prophet) + Any madness card (for example: nagging thoughts (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Nagging+Thoughts), from under the floorboards (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=From+Under+the+Floorboards)).
5) Malevolent whispers (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Malevolent+Whispers) + merciless resolve (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Merciless+Resolve)
6) wolf of devil's breach (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Wolf+of+Devil%27s+Breach) + ANY high CMC card with madness (for example: alms of the vein (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Alms+of+the+Vein),
7) Fork in the road (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Fork+in+the+Road) + stoic builder (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Stoic+Builder)
   Just to name a few.

Knowledge pool (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Knowledge+Pool) + curse of exhaustion (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Curse+of+Exhaustion). Loooooooooooooove it.

indeed mangara of corondor (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mangara+of+Corondor) + cloudshift (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Cloudshift) or + minamo, school at water's edge (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Minamo%2C+School+at+Water%27s+Edge) or + karakas (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Karakas) you may untap mangara with minamo as interruption to exile (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Exile) 2 permanents, or blink it/bounce it to your hand to save mangara from exile (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Exile) and then exile (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Exile) other permanents. I made a moden deck around it

@Mostlynotgay That is awesome!
I've run Isochron Scepter (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Isochron+Scepter) + Silence (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Silence), then activated at the end of opponents untap step, but your lock even stops instants. Very cool!

While we're on the topic of Modern, I also love Hedron Crab (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hedron+Crab) + Oboro, Palace in the Clouds (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Oboro%2C+Palace+in+the+Clouds) (bounce the land any turn you miss a land drop) and
A new one I'm seeing a bit is in Grixis delve decks. They do Sin Prodder (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sin+Prodder) + Gurmag Angler (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Gurmag+Angler) or Tasigur, the Golden Fang (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Tasigur%2C+the+Golden+Fang). Sin Prodder (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sin+Prodder) feeds the graveyard, and when something Like Angler flpts, the opponent has to choose to either lose 7 life or let you have a 5/5 for (probably) one mana.

My friend made a combo deck that had a win condition of suture priest (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Suture+Priest) + intruder alarm (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Intruder+Alarm) + forbidden orchard (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Forbidden+Orchard). Kill your opponent in one turn by flooding their board for them.

The best part is you can sometimes hit a REALLY good card and get out a bunch of copies of it with cheap spells. I once got 5 Admonition Angel (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Admonition+Angel) on the board by exiling one, casting a 1drop then just casting counters in response. It was hilarious.

Actually with silence (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Silence), it doesn't work that way. Besides that, your opponent still has priority.
Silence (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Silence) also won't stop your opponents from casting spells after you cast Silence (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Silence) but before Silence (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Silence) resolves.

Agreed that spells cast in response to activation of isochron will still resolve. As for priority, you gain it at the end of phases (or to phrase differently, in response to changing phases). Your opponent can spit out all the instants they like in response, but activating before their main phase means creatures, sorcery's, enchantments, and artifacts are totally shut out. This combo is by no means a hard lock like Mostlynotgay's, but it is a real challenge for an opponent to play around, and completely unbeatable without a significant amount of instants or artifact removal (especially since it goes online turn 3). Good points though!

kourinick,

What I was trying to get at, which has been done to me. Is when my opponent says "during your upkeep" while I'm on the untap phase. Some people forget (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Forget) those are 2 seperate phases in which confusion lies. Silence (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Silence) is used after the untap, not during so there isn't the full lock. Hence why I brought up priority. But you are just about completely right with what you said. LOL I won't nitpick the 4 or more cards for delve when subject is about 2 or 3 card combo.

I like using Mirror Mockery (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mirror+Mockery) on Reflector Mage (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Reflector+Mage) in Standard, that's always hilarious.
I enjoy using Surrak The Hunt Caller (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Surrak%2C+the+Hunt+Caller) and Hero's Blade (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hero%27s+Blade). if Hero's Blade (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hero%27s+Blade) is played before Surrak enters the battlefield, it is automatically equipped and triggers his formidable ability! 8/6 with haste turn 4! It's also fun to do it with Yasova Dragonclaw (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Yasova+Dragonclaw) turn 3 and steal their creatures!
My favourite has to be Sphinx's Tutelage (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sphinx%27s+Tutelage) and Painter's Servant (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Painter%27s+Servant)

I'm a simple (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Simple) man. I like to combine a Managorger Hydra (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Managorger+Hydra) and/or a Sunscorch Regent (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sunscorch+Regent) alongside at least one Enduring Scalelord (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Enduring+Scalelord). I also like the combination of a Cunning Breezedancer (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Cunning+Breezedancer) with Great Teacher's Decree (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Great+Teacher%27s+Decree). Also, a Ruthless Deathfang (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Ruthless+Deathfang) alongside From Beyond (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=From+Beyond) and a Zulaport Cutthroat (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Zulaport+Cutthroat) or two. Just some of my most favored combos that I play.

I'm much enjoying the synergy between sin prodder (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sin+Prodder) and vampiric link (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Vampiric+Link), rakdos, lord of riots (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rakdos%2C+Lord+of+Riots), etc. Not only are you taking damage if you discard a nonland card(lands are dead (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Dead) draws past 5lands in the deck I play and worth skipping), I'm potentially gaining life/enabling a pre-combat Rakdos- or flat out making creatures cheaper/practically free if rakdos happens to be out already.

Sarkhan the Mad (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sarkhan+the+Mad) -2 works excellently with Hell's Thunder (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hell%27s+Thunder) and Flamewake Phoenix (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Flamewake+Phoenix), as well as any slumbering dragons who aren't pulling their weight :)

Try running rakdos, lord of riots (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rakdos%2C+Lord+of+Riots) in a madness deck with fiery temper (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Fiery+Temper), lightning axe (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Lightning+Axe) and alms of the vein (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Alms+of+the+Vein). His Effect will let you play some really big creatures pretty fast.

@angorashi, that's good to hear. Also the new SOI has some good synergies when it comes to B/R burn damage and destruction spells. Even adding blazing hellhound (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Blazing+Hellhound) ( from origins) would be a good investment if used right.

My current favorite combo is Indulgent Aristocrat (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Indulgent+Aristocrat) and Malevolent Whispers (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Malevolent+Whispers). Take the opponent's creature away, slap them with it, and then sac it before your turn is up. It costs 6 mana to pull that move and it's not a win move but it is frustrating for your opponent and gives your vampires a buff. I've run Act of Treason (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Act+of+Treason) instead as well, but the madness cost on Malevolent Whispers (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Malevolent+Whispers) pairs really well with Call the Bloodline (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Call+the+Bloodline). If you have the mana you can use Indulgent Aristocrat (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Indulgent+Aristocrat), Malevolent Whispers (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Malevolent+Whispers), and Call the Bloodline (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Call+the+Bloodline) all together which is pretty sweet.

I also really like Liliana's Indignation (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Liliana%27s+Indignation) with Diregraf Colossus (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Diregraf+Colossus) and Sanitarium Skeleton (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sanitarium+Skeleton) in my zombie deck.

Good topic.

What works much faster without the help of a third cardl, is Presence of Gond (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Presence+of+Gond) or Elemental Mastery (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Elemental+Mastery) with either Midnight Guard (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Midnight+Guard) ot Sunstrike Legionnaire (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sunstrike+Legionnaire)

A good combo you can't go wrong with is creeping dread (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Creeping+Dread) and sanitarium skeleton (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sanitarium+Skeleton). You're forcing the opponent to discard every turn and all you have to do is pay three mana to keep it returning back to your hand.
