Title: Dominaria Pre Release
Post by: dokepa on April 22, 2018, 06:42:46 pm
I hope everyone enjoyed the release (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Release) of Dominaria . I won 3 packs of cards . I played b/w historic tap deck . Went to a new place this time and it was so much better than the last . The people were kind and friendly , no table flipping . I bought a box and get a free promo card along with the 2 in the tournament box . Firesong and Sunspeaker (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Firesong+and+Sunspeaker) .

Table flipping??  :o  That sounds way too intense for a pre-release.  (Not to mention just plain poor behavior at any sanctioned event.)

Solo Pre-release: Lost first round, won second, lost 3rd.  Bad draw, went RedGreen for Verdant Force (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Verdant+Force), Grunn, the Lonely King (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Grunn%2C+the+Lonely+King), Grand Warlord Radha (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Grand+Warlord+Radha) and marwyn the Nurturer (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Marwyn%2C+the+Nurturer).  Not enough elves to succeed in ramping.  Still, each loss came close.

2HG.  Won every game with my partner.  Demonlord Belzenlock and Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Tetsuko+Umezawa%2C+Fugitive) promo cards.  Muldrotha, the Gravetide (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Muldrotha%2C+the+Gravetide) in my packs.  Thran Temporal Gateway (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Thran+Temporal+Gateway) (foil) in my packs.  The Eldest Reborn (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=The+Eldest+Reborn) (foil) in my packs.  Partner had Darigaaz Reincarnated (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Darigaaz+Reincarnated).  We both played artifact heavy decks, but even still we were almost the only ones not playing two color decks.  We steamrolled all challengers 😀.  Waiting between games after game 2, they played us standard 2hg.  I had my BU pirate deck, partner played agressive WR deck.  They couldn't keep any creatures on the field.  Ran out of time before second round on standard could finish.

Went to three prereleases, results: WB knights & removal, 2-1-1; forced jund because darigaaz feat. Icy Manipulater, 1-3; WG kicker bulk, 3-0-1

The best results came from the wg kicker deck, and I played the only rare that fit - Benalish Marshall, WWW, 3/3 with a +1/+1 anthem for other creatures. Only hit the battlefield in one game.

Goes to show that sealed can be silly fun. You dont need a good pool. The prerelease I went jund just for the bomb was cool too, but in a different way.

By the way,  Board The Weatherlight (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Board+the+Weatherlight) is disgusting for Standard. Did you think glimmer of genius (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Glimmer+of+Genius) into opt (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Opt) was great for digging into your library to recast Approach of the Second Sun (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Approach+of+the+Second+Sun)?  5 mana, 2 instants gets the Sun on top of your library for your next draw. Board the Weatherlight (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Board+the+Weatherlight) is a sorcery, yes - but it's only 2cmc. That and Opt (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Opt) put Second Sun into your hand for 3 mana.

Why is no one talking about this? And by 'anyone' I mean the usual suspects on mtg websites/podcasts. I think it's a perfect fit; who cares if you hit a historic in the five from Board the Weatherlight (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Board+the+Weatherlight) - that's not the point.

I think because the Hour of Devastation (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hour+of+Devastation), Amonkhet and Kaladesh rotate out soon.  They may have 6 months to abuse the combo, and after that not so much.

Casting Approach of the Second Sun (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Approach+of+the+Second+Sun) with Lich's Mastery (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Lich%27s+Mastery) out puts the card back into your hand immediately.

It's going to be a long six months for anyone not playing blue (or a very few specific cards in B or W). Six months is just the right amount of time to avoid a bunch of people whining for a ban, but I bet they still do ;)
