Title: Chromatic Challenge?
Post by: WWolfe on January 12, 2018, 06:15:18 pm
Anyone else doing this? The idea behind it is to build an EDH deck for each possible color combination. That means 32 decks.

I'm halfway there with 16 decks...

Monocolored (5)
White- Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rune-Tail%2C+Kitsune+Ascendant)* starting to build
Blue- Talrand, Sky Summoner (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Talrand%2C+Sky+Summoner) *finished
Black- Yahenni, Undying Partisan (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Yahenni%2C+Undying+Partisan) *finished- was Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Ob+Nixilis+of+the+Black+Oath) so I had built a PW commander
Red- Purphoros, God of the Forge (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Purphoros%2C+God+of+the+Forge) *finished
Green- Rishkar, Peema Renegade (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rishkar%2C+Peema+Renegade) *finished

Temur- Animar, Soul of Elements (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Animar%2C+Soul+of+Elements) *finished

Four Colors (5)

I think I have one for most without trying lol

I'm such a Golgari & mono-black player, that at one point I think it was 9 I had that were just in those colors. Just talking about it makes me want to rebuild (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rebuild) my Hapatra -1/-1 counter deck or my Nath discard or my Meren recursion or my...well, you get the point. lol

Until about 2 weeks ago, I was in the same spot I was 6 months ago when some real life issues stalled me at 12 decks. I've built two in the past 2 weeks- granted part of that was vacation time I had to use or lose. Goal is to finish it up by the end of this year.

R color is annoying because there's only a couple 4 color commanders.. I recommend Yidris for non-white and I have an Ulamog deck you can take a look at

Definitely will be checking out your Ulamog.

I've already got some of the commanders chosen for the colors I'm missing but the four colored ones are the ones I'm having the hardest time deciding on commanders for. I'm considering doing Vial Smasher & Thrasios so that I have a partner-commander deck and those are the only two of those that I liked paired up.

Odric, Lunarch Marshal (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Odric%2C+Lunarch+Marshal) would make a great White General.  Unexpected, but load him up with an army with abilities (such as Oketra) and equipment or enchantments that grant abilities and he quickly gets to dominating a field.  Plus I have wrathed a board with him on the field, making all my critters survive, to the dismay of my opponents.

For Abzan, I have the very queen herself, Anafenza the Foremost (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Anafenza%2C+the+Foremost).  Her deck is where I utilize Odric (even if he could be great on his own), but board wipes definitely hurt my opponents with her on the field.  I also have Sigarda, Heron's Grace (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sigarda%2C+Heron%27s+Grace) providing cover for a mostly human (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Human) deck and myself.

I can tell you from experience, Thrasios and Vial Smasher did not work out as well as I had hoped.

In Grixis (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Grixis), I have Nekusar, the Mindrazer (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Nekusar%2C+the+Mindrazer) as one general and Thraximundar (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Thraximundar) as the other.  They are very different decks.  Nekusar makes people cry every time they have to draw and/or discard cards.  Thraximundar (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Thraximundar), on the other hand, punishes every opponent every time a creature of mine dies.  Thrax takes more time to build up, but once he does is a juggernaut (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Juggernaut) to deal with.

With Bant (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Bant), I had a Rubina Soulsinger deck that I called La Belle Dame Sans Merci.  I put Feed the Pack (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Feed+the+Pack) and Cathar's Crusade (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Crusade) into the deck, robbed them of non-token creatures and fed them to her wolves... Making a very big army of very big wolves to help her out.  I took it apart for my Abzan deck, but it is one I have thought of rebuilding bigger and meaner than ever.

Any thought on Vial Smasher as a Rakdos commander?

For Rakdos, I would go with Olivia Voldaren (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Olivia+Voldaren).  Bring in your best sacrifice outlets, steal their creatures and if they try to take them back, feed them to your outlets.
Selesnya I would go for Captain Sisay (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Captain+Sisay) and pack it withlegendary creatures, including Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mirri%2C+Weatherlight+Duelist).  Pull any creature you need for your deck, when you need it, no mana required.  Even better if you add Paradox Engine (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Paradox+Engine).  Load up on mana dorks and go wild!
Dimir: Circu, Dimir Lobotomost.  Run your opponents' cards out of their decks just by casting spells, no artifacts, no eldrazi.  Just as many blue, black and especially blue/black as you can muster.
Gruul: Thromak the Insatiable.  Build up a wave of tokens and eat them for a massively big commander.  5 eaten means one hit knocks an opponent out.  Protect him with Archetype of Endurance (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Archetype+of+Endurance).
Simic: Momir Vig, Simic Visionary (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Momir+Vig%2C+Simic+Visionary).  Again, call what you need when you need it.

For Rakdos I'm not sure who I'll use, I already have a vampire tribal deck using Olivia in the 99 and I'm trying to cut back on using cards in multiple decks (actually going through and trimming that back some now but it's hard on some cards like mana rocks & tutors).

Selesnya I was actually looking at Captain Sissay.

Simic I was leaning towards Merfolk tribal just because it's something semi new and not any others in my playgroup.

Gruul & Dimir I haven't started looking at yet but Thromak is interesting as is Circu.

Thanks!

I do the same thing.  I only allow myself 1 copy throughout all my decks.  I did compile a list of cards that I permit myself as many as I want/need.  It is predominantly cards that have been printed in at least 4 or 5 Commander Decks; as I always buy myself one of each when they come out.  So Command Tower (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Command+Tower), Sol Ring (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Sol+Ring), Lightning Greaves (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Lightning+Greaves) are all on the list, as are most (if not all) of the karoos and signets.

Happy Brewing!  :)

I'm quite far from the completed challenge - I have a problem of not having an edh playgroup that fits my style of play (pretty close to 60-75% rule, I guess), but I've put together 2 decks: a jund -1/-1 theme with proshh as general and a GW cats go wide or tall build with the new Mirri (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mirri) at the helm.

I'd like to do a dimir mill deck, an azorius flyers/pillow fort, a 'cast spells without paying their mana cost tribal' build, a golgari sacrifice deck with that 2/2 insect death shaman that had been hanging out with Vraska...more, but I'm not made of $ :)

I've got one in the works that I'll finish next - Samut's Naya (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Naya) Tapdancers. All cards that care about tapping and untapping. That'll be 3 completed :D  I mainly do it as a mental exercise until I find a playgroup not all about turn 5 kills in edh.

Thanks man. I currently have 81 cards remaining that are duplicated across my decks (I've cut the number in half), some are harder to adjust than others due to availability of functional reprints or cards that do close enough to the same thing or finding an alternative to that cards purpose. Some of these (about 15 or so) were purposely duplicated in two decks due to having both a Daxos of Meletis (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Daxos+of+Meletis) deck and a Daxos the Returned (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Daxos+the+Returned) deck. Now that Daxos will no longer be leading the Azorius deck (he'll be surrendering command to Azor upon his release (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Release)), that little bit of added flavor across the two decks is being changed.

Hopefully by the end of the month I'll be done with this project and can get back to finishing up the Chromatic Challenge.

Hope you have luck finding a group that desires to take out of the game what you do.

I build so many decks because I honestly enjoy that almost as much as playing them once done. I know what ya mean about the money of building decks, unfortunately some of my once disposable income is now not disposable as my kids draw closer and closer to college.  :'(

I have a question, sine some of the planeswalkers were printed as Legendary Creatures, can they be used as commanders even though they flip?
Title: Re: Chromatic Challenge?

The flip Planeswalkers can be used as Commanders since they start as Legendary creatures.  Ascan the mono colored Planeswalkers from the Commander set a few years back (Teferi, Temporal Archmage (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Teferi%2C+Temporal+Archmage) has more potential in a Superfriends deck than as a Commander).

I'm not big on the mono-colored decks myself (outside of mono black 8)), that's why I'm farther with the mono-colored than the multicolored, wanna go ahead and get those out of the way.

My next deck is going to be colorless, using Hope of Ghirapur (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hope+of+Ghirapur) as the commander, and focusing on voltron style face smash (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Smash). Not sure how powerful the deck will end up being but I think it'll be neat to beat someone's face in with commander damage from a 1/1.

Latest update:

* Karador is returning from retirement. Saskia was a good general for the Shadowborn Apostle (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Shadowborn+Apostle) deck but I kept finding myself wishing Karador was still running it.
* Saskia is then going to be retooled to focus on extra combat steps and maybe infect
* Tajic is having the voltron portion removed to focus more on token anthems
* Hope of Ghirapur (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hope+of+Ghirapur) is about 75% built

With Karador coming back, putting a new twist on Saskia to not take a step backwards, and nearing completion of Hope of Ghirapur (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hope+of+Ghirapur), I'm closing in on the halfway mark of completing the challenge!

Three good suggestions so far.

To be honest, I was leaning towards a Balan, Wandering Knight (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Balan%2C+Wandering+Knight) deck but while building my Hope of Ghirapur (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hope+of+Ghirapur) deck and realized that Balan would end up basically the same deck with white added in.

If your play group will let you I have been thinking about seeing if mine would let me run Bruna the Fading Light (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Bruna%2C+the+Fading+Light) and Gisela the broken blade (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Gisela%2C+the+Broken+Blade) as partner commanders and go for brisela voice of nightmares (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Brisela%2C+Voice+of+Nightmares). my first sixty card deck was a mono white solider deck which would be sweet. avacyn angel of hope (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Avacyn%2C+Angel+of+Hope) is a nasty mono white lock deck in edh. especially when you cast her the Armageddon (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Armageddon). my friend had a brutal Avacyn angel (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Angel) hope deck that was really good maybe build a hate bears or lock out deck with her. she might be one of the best mono white commanders imo for control style deck.

I think that Wizards should come out with more legendary creatures that have the "Partner" keyword in them. This way you "legally" can play more than one commander together. It would make games so much more interesting when you have He Who Hungers (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=He+Who+Hungers) combo on the field with Infernal Kirin (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Infernal+Kirin). I play a spirit, you lose some cards, I sacrifice a spirit, you lose some more cards. Dark Kami Devotion any one?

At the moment, I'm leaning toward Rune-Tail or Commander Eesha (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Commander+Eesha).

The Odrics are both in another deck (Tajic), and I try not to have card duplicate across the decks (something I plan on going back and totally making the case across all my decks after I complete the Chromatic Challenge).

I like the idea of Gisela & Bruna but I don't think my play group would go for it.

Eesha with auras and equipment could definitely ruin your opponents' day.  An unblockable commander immune to creature abilities is sure to draw ire, so ways to make it hexproof (ie, Avacyn's Mask) or indestructible (ie, Hammer of Nazahn (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Hammer+of+Nazahn)) are definitely recommended.

rip brisela voice of nightmares (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Brisela%2C+Voice+of+Nightmares) edh. she'd be pretty good as a commander thb cool stuff you could do with that

Most of them aren't fans of the partner mechanic so I don't see them wanting to allow partner commanders that aren't printed as such.

Not liking the partner mechanic is one of the few things I disagree with them on, only reason I don't have a partner commander deck at the moment is I haven't gotten around to it.

Your suggestion still seems like a fun one, and one I may take on at some point once I've finished the Chromatic Challenge.

Decided on my next two decks...

Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rune-Tail%2C+Kitsune+Ascendant) for mono-white & Chromium (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Chromium) for Esper.

If I can finish Chromium (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Chromium) & Rune-Tail quick enough.

Out of curiousity, why not Dromar, the Banisher (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Dromar%2C+the+Banisher) instead of Chromium (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Chromium)?  It would give you some options if red or green are bothering you... Or tokens for that matter.

Wanted to do one of the original Elder Dragons and Nicol Bolas (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Nicol+Bolas) is already represented in my playgroup.

Vaevictis Asmadi (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Vaevictis+Asmadi) or Palladia-Mors (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Palladia-Mors) would probably have been more my choice after Nicol Bolas (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Nicol+Bolas).  Pumpable general for any of three types of mana... With Aggression (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Aggression), it becomes even more of a threat.  Palladia-Mors (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Palladia-Mors), on the other hand, has trample already.  Equipment or aura can readily make it a huge threat.

I plan on using Gishath for Naya (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Naya) when I get around to that for a tribal dino deck. I may do a Vaevictis Asmadi (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Vaevictis+Asmadi) deck for Jund whenever I get around to that one but my attraction to Chromium (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Chromium) was that all I ever see for Chromium (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Chromium) decks are decks where people use him just for the colors and don't really care about casting him. I'm looking forward to the challenge of building a deck that cares about casting him and using him.

The thing that makes me sad for Chromium (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Chromium): he lacks green.  With green, he would gain access to trample to go with rampage, but more importantly, you could run Lure (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Lure).  Rampage with trample and lure (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Lure)?  That would be awesome!  Instead, he will typically be blocked by one creature, probably with Deathtouch.  Nemesis Mask (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Nemesis+Mask) is going to be a must, in addition to ways to cheat it out and protect it.  March of Souls (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=March+of+Souls) is another good option.

Kusari-Gama (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Kusari-Gama) will make him a one-sided board wipe where they will have to decide between blocking him or taking 7 (or more) to the face.

Honestly if u build him u have to build around him.. if ur just using him to have WUB then just play Oloro

Which is precisely why I want to actually build around him. I've seen far too many Chromium (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Chromium) decks that just use him for the colors when they should be using Oloro.

Decided on Generals for a few more of the color combinations...

Dimir- Ramirez Dipetro (Foglio tribal)
Gruul- Omnath, Locus of Rage (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Omnath%2C+Locus+of+Rage)
Simic- Kumena, Tyrant of Orazca (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Kumena%2C+Tyrant+of+Orazca)
Bant- Phelddagrif (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Phelddagrif)
Jund- Vaevictis Asmadi (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Vaevictis+Asmadi)
Naya- Zacama, Primal Calamity (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Zacama%2C+Primal+Calamity)
WUBR- Thrasios & Vial Smasher
GWUB- Witch-Maw Nephilim (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Witch-Maw+Nephilim) (legal as general in my playgroup)

This is tentative pending any new legendaries coming out that I like better before I start working on these.

For Bant (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Bant), I prefer Rubinia Soulsinger (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Rubinia+Soulsinger).  Are you looking to make a group hug deck with Phelddagrif (http://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Phelddagrif)?
