So I recently posted a thread about the finances of magic, master sets, and reprints.
I had this idea while walking to class, let’s make a masters set for us the players, and what we want.
So first things first. I don’t want this to be the greatest draft format ever. This set is about making expensive cards more accessible to players and lowering the cost of competitive play. So let’s not worry to much about the draft side of this.
Second this is about value. Cards that need the reprint because they are ridiculously expensive for what they are. No penny rares or trees of redemption.
Third, we can decide rarities. I think many mythics that have been printed in recent masters sets should have been rares. Stuff like Tarmogoyf (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Tarmogoyf), Snapcaster Mage (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Snapcaster+Mage), Chalice, Ensaring bridge maybe, but these cards had been printed at rare previously. I don’t think we should go switching commons and uncommons around but if you have a justification for it I think that’s fine. But I understand why those were mythics.
Fourth, for previous 249 card master sets this is the distribution; 15 mythic rares, 53 rares, 80 uncommons, and 101 commons.

I'm just throwing out suggestions for cards that have started to cost a little too much, and that more people would play if they cost less. I've kept the rarity the same, but included where I think a shift could be.

Yeah fast mana like that isn’t usually common I’m not sure how we should go about organizing and sorting selections and final selections for this but right now I will just keep a list of all the cards mentioned. Powerful stuff like top which isn’t too expensive $15 is not great but bearable. I feel like it can be anywhere from $8 to $15 and not be Ridiculous.
Maybe uncommon for lotus petal (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Lotus+Petal) might be an okay compromise

This great so far I. I’m very excited tomorrow or the day after I will tally all these suggestions up then put the list here and we can see what we think. I am cautious about printing 15 total rate lands maybe just the most expensive of the fast lands or a combination of both. Some of the zendikar fetches like arid Mesa (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Arid+Mesa) have stabilized at like $35 but idk. Maybe a combination of the most played lands out of certain cycles like go half fast lands and half man lands. What do you all think? Also what about commons, there are a few that are a few dollars. Maybe cantrips like ponder (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Ponder) and stuff.

Cantrips are good.
Also, Mana Drain (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mana+Drain) could use another reprint. It's still around $60.

Some cards are meant to be expensive. I would love for stuff to be all $10 or less but their business is selling packs and keeping high power level cards like a lot of the mentioned ones at a higher price is what does that. They make no money from sales of singles and they lose money if there are no cards priced like the Moxen or Mana Drain (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Mana+Drain) because then packs cost more than the cards you're looking for

yeah Ideal but not realistic. Although I agree with soren to some extent that there are certain cards that are meant to be expensive, but I feel like lands should not be those cards, for me personally the price of fetches pretty much out prices me really quick. I think that lands should be relatively easy to come by, like $20 which is what the khans fetches are sitting around. I mean if lili and goyf are above $50 fine but chances are unless I crack it in a random pack I wont ever get my hands on them for a long time. My biggest thing is that I want most modern decks to be under $1000 personally I think under 500 is high but I will settle for a under 1000. and some decks are alot of decks are, The thing that really spurred this on me was how expensive good mana bases are.

I agree with that sentiment. My biggest critique of the game is that any rare land card is too expensive until its been reprinted about a half-dozen times in Standard-legal booster packs. And this has been true going back to the beginning. But, as mentioned, the reprinting of the lands in a Masters set won't do much for the price. They price may drop a little bit initially, but will bounce back up after a year or two. The reason: Masters sets are limited print runs AND they have an MSRP equivalent to about 3 regular packs; some stores sell them much higher. (Revised duals are obviously the exception, being on the Reserve List).
So if we're making an IDEAL Masters set ... it would not be a limited print run. AND it would have an MSRP of $5.99
I've also always thought that Masters sets should have 2 rares per pack, and maybe 5 uncommons per pack. Especially since the express purpose of these sets is to put reprints into the hands of players.

that is an interesting idea but Maybe like MSRP of like $7.99 so its some what inbetween of the regular master's pack cost and the price of standard prices. I don't think people would mind if certain cards were printed like crazy. although lets get back to making our set list for this I will post the list so far later today

I don't think that arid mesa (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Arid+Mesa) has necessarily stabilized. I just recently bought into the rest of my playset. I bought the first 2 about 2 months ago, and I couldn't find the other 2 recently for under about $37. I agree that only blackleave cliffs should be reprinted, as for the manlands, stirring wildwood (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Stirring+Wildwood), and lavaclaw reaches (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Lavaclaw+Reaches) don't really need a reprint. Another card that might be a good card to reprint is collected company (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Collected+Company). It's not crazy expensive, but it sees a lot of play in modern. and I could see it getting expensive. I think this is a great thread and I am glad it has been created.

Yeah I agree I mean I called it, I told my friend I said Collective Company is gonna see a bunch of play in modern and he was like nah its too expensive to cast, It will go in elves and thats it. And I was right its in a few different decks now.

If you read back in the thread, we determined (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Determined) that we are creating an "IDEAL" masters set. (Ideal for us I suppose). We are not making a realistic masters set.
The point of this thread is Ideal Master Set, not Ideal realistic Master Set. ;)
Also, just because a card is old and hasn't been reprinted does not mean that is is on the reserve list. Only rares were put onto the reserve list, and only some of them. Oubliette (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Oubliette) was a common in Arabian Nights. It is not on the reserve list.

Alright this is good I will take these additions and add them on to the list I have. I Think we will get really full on rares and mythics we'd all like to see so when you offer your picks please let me know at what rarity also, don't forget (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?lng=en&card=Forget) this is about lowering the over all cost of the game, I think if heavily played planeswalkers were around 40 to 50 dollars wizards wouldn't lose their bussiness model cuz . those are still chase worthy.
