Easter was about a week ago so this is unfortunately coming a week late. I've always seen chatter on other sites about hidden surprises found in MTG cards, but not on Deckstats. That's about to change. There are loads of Easter Eggs so if you know of any, add it to this thread. Here are some of my favorites.
- The artwork for Precinct Captain (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Precinct+Captain) and the RTR soldier token is supposed to be the same scene from different angles.
(https://img.scryfall.com/cards/large/front/5/f/5f1f6178-4071-401f-bd0d-cac0c5967661.jpg?1562787069)(https://img.scryfall.com/cards/large/front/9/4/944a40e8-5469-4d8b-b044-67ff3382ec92.jpg?1562539814)
- The card Puncturing Blow (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Puncturing+Blow) depicts The Scorpion God (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=The+Scorpion+God) being killed. If you used Puncturing Blow (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Puncturing+Blow) on The Scorpion God (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=The+Scorpion+God), it prevents it from coming back.
- Dragonlord Silumgar (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Dragonlord+Silumgar) is wearing Tasigur, the Golden Fang (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tasigur%2C+the+Golden+Fang) like a necklace.
- Each of the Ultimatums from Shards of Alara have a Planeswalker in their art. The exception is Cruel Ultimatum (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Cruel+Ultimatum), but it later had an artwork featuring Nicol Bolas (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Nicol+Bolas).
- There are two monkeys going doggy-style in the background of Uktabi Orangutan (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Uktabi+Orangutan). They appear again in Uktabi Kong (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Uktabi+Kong), this time with a child on the way.
- You can see the artwork for Krenko's Command (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Krenko%27s+Command) in the background of Krenko, Mob Boss (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Krenko%2C+Mob+Boss).
- Force of Will (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Force+of+Will) was originally a red card, but was changed to a blue card during design. The artwork from Alliances clearly shows that this was supposed to be red. Makes me wonder (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Wonder) what Legacy would look like today.
- Expropriate (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Expropriate) has a bunch of other cards hidden in it's artwork, including the moxes and Muzzio, Visionary Architect (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Muzzio%2C+Visionary+Architect)'s hat. See if you can find everything.
- Fblthp, the Lost (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Fblthp%2C+the+Lost) has a tendency to show up in artwork of other cards, including Statute of Denial (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Statute+of+Denial), Unquestioned Authority (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Unquestioned+Authority), and March of the Multitudes (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=March+of+the+Multitudes).
- Raid Bombardment (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Raid+Bombardment) and Unified Will (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Unified+Will) shows the same scene.
- There are a lot of sets where the basic lands form a panorama.
- Curiosity (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Curiosity) from Exodus shows Mirri stalking Crovax after he got cursed. In the alternate timeline, Keen Sense (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Keen+Sense) shows Crovax fleeing from Mirri after she got cursed. These cards are color shifted versions of each other.
- Gather the Pack (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gather+the+Pack) shows elves hunting the goblin party shown in Boggart Brute (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Boggart+Brute).
- Presence of the Master (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Presence+of+the+Master) is very clearly Albert Einstein.
- Saying the flavor text of Carnivorous Death Parrot (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Carnivorous+Death-Parrot) triggers 5 of the gotcha cards from the same set.
-
Those are all neat.
The one difference I notice in the Precinct Captain (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Precinct+Captain) one is in one card the soldier is holding the sword, in the other it's not.
-
For me, it's these little attentions to detail that turn MTG from a good game to a superb one. Not necessary in the slightest, but oh so satisfying.
Another one I remember fondly from recent memory is that Charming Prince (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Charming+Prince) can rescue (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Rescue) your creature from being Trapped in the Tower (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Trapped+in+the+Tower).
-
Did some digging and found a few others you might like.
- Dreamcatcher (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Dreamcatcher) has the dreams of other planes in the background. Namely slivers, although the implications of this conflicts with the MTG timeline.
- The Masterpiece art for Extraplanar Lens (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Extraplanar+Lens) shows the Approach of the Second Sun (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Approach+of+the+Second+Sun) on it; a card that, at the time, hadn't been released.
- Here's a really cool puzzle. The tokens from eternal masters had words running along the edges. You need a whole bunch of tokens to be arranged to solve the puzzle, which ended up being a preview for Conspiracy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Conspiracy): Take the Crown. The message read in one direction was told by Queen Marchesa (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Queen+Marchesa), instructing her new subjects that she is the queen now. Read in a different direction revealed a message from Adriana, Captain of the Guard (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Adriana%2C+Captain+of+the+Guard), urging the people to resist Marchesa's rule.
- The artist Robert Bliss is known for including phallic imagery in his work. As a result, later printings of Polymorph (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Polymorph) had the art cropped.
- Goblin Charbelcher (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Goblin+Charbelcher) is launching a Black Lotus (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Black+Lotus).
- Treasure Nabber (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Treasure+Nabber) managed to nab a Sol Ring (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sol+Ring). Makes sense, considering that this card was released in a commander set.
- One of the swamps from Eventide is shown in Flame Jab (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Flame+Jab), but completely on fire.
- There are a lot of cards that reference people's names in various ways, like their initials (Jayemdae Tome (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Jayemdae+Tome)), short name (Mons's Goblin Raiders (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mons%27s+Goblin+Raiders)), or name spelled backwards (Nevinyrral's Disk (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Nevinyrral%27s+Disk)). The most recent card to do this is Gavi, Nest Warden (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gavi%2C+Nest+Warden).
- Flame Wave (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Flame+Wave) has a dude surfing on it.
- Relic Ward (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Relic+Ward) and Natural Order (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Natural+Order) are two parts of the same flavor text.
- Speaking of flavor text, Spread the Sickness (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Spread+the+Sickness) references Fecundity (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Fecundity).
- Alex Horley-Orlandelli decided to include their name on the side of the coffin in Disentomb (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Disentomb).
-
I wouldn't really call them Easter eggs, but one of the reasons I always liked New Phyrexia was that it showed various cards from Mirrodin in they're compleated versions. (E.g. Blightsteel Colossus (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Blightsteel+Colossus) is a compleated Darksteel Colossus (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Darksteel+Colossus), Etched Monstrosity (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Etched+Monstrosity) is a compleated Etched Champion (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Etched+Champion).)
-
All the regular frame basic lands from the Unsanctioned box set have squirrels hidden in them in an abstract kind of way.
-
Iroas's Blessing (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=de&card=Iroas%27s+Blessing) is a clear sign that even Magic isn't save from memes and anime. Compare its artwork to this:
JoJo references in Magic: The Gathering. What a time to be alive.
-
Are you sure that's a Jojo reference? The only thing those really have in common is the perspective.
-
Are you sure that's a Jojo reference? The only thing those really have in common is the perspective.
I'm not perfectly sure, but the meme and JoJo are pretty well known, so it's not exactly farfetched to assume. Anime has become mainstream and WotC asked about it in their surveys. Maybe I could mail the artist to make sure.
-
I feel like there is a problem when I misread Carnivorous Death Parrot (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Carnivorous+Death-Parrot) as Coronavirus Death Parrot.
-
I think the cabin fever is getting to you, baby.
-
Found one by accident: you can see a Phyrexian Tower (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Phyrexian+Tower) in the background of Xantcha, Sleeper Agent (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Xantcha%2C+Sleeper+Agent).
Also, in Unwind (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Unwind), I'm pretty sure Jhoira is holding the modern masters version of Timetwister (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Timetwister).
-
I never knew timetwister (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Timetwister) was something you hold like that. I always just assumed it was like some sort of vortex or something. I guess it does make sense that it is an object that lets the user twist time.
-
Found some more.
- Gallantry (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gallantry) and Repentant Vampire (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Repentant+Vampire) are the same scene. There are actually a lot of cards like this. Guardian Angel (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Guardian+Angel) and Paralyze (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Paralyze) is another one I found.
- Legacy Weapon (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Legacy+Weapon) has a bunch of other cards in it, depicting most of the different parts of the legacy weapon (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Legacy+Weapon).
- You can see the Helvault (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Helvault) in the background of Tree of Redemption (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tree+of+Redemption). A destroyed Helvault (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Helvault) is in the background of Tree of Perdition (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tree+of+Perdition), and it looks like the tree is mimicking it's shape.
- The Warchief cycle from Scourge (Daru Warchief (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Daru+Warchief), Goblin Warchief (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Goblin+Warchief), Krosan Warchief (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Krosan+Warchief), Mistform Warchief (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mistform+Warchief), and Undead Warchief (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Undead+Warchief)) are all wearing a mox of the appropriate colour.

- 13 shards of glass
- 13 drips of blood
- 13 bolts in the barrel
- 13 utensils on the wall
- 13 planks on the roof

More easter eggs!
- The MDFC markers from Kaldheim, Strixhaven, and Zendikar are all in sets of 9. The backgrounds can be arranged to show an image.
- There is a rumor that the names of shock (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Shock) lands are innuendos for a vagina. I don't buy it. I mean, you might have a case with Breeding Pool (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Breeding+Pool) and Blood Crypt (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Blood+Crypt), but Godless Shrine (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Godless+Shrine) and Steam Vents (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Steam+Vents) is a bit of a stretch.
- You can see Saffi Eriksdotter (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Saffi+Eriksdotter) in the background of Hans Eriksson (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Hans+Eriksson). There is a shadow looming over them, presumably a Lhurgoyf (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Lhurgoyf).
- Some of the werewolves in human form will have features that carry over into their wolf form. For example, Convicted Killer (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Convicted+Killer) has a brand (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Brand) and Kessig Forgemaster (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kessig+Forgemaster) has three thumbs.
- The curse cycle from C17 features a planewalker finding himself in trouble across all planes. He also shows up in Flame Blitz (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Flame+Blitz).
- There are a few cards that mention a goblin named "Furt". Nosy Goblin (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Nosy+Goblin), Goblin Lookout (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Goblin+Lookout), Misguided Rage (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Misguided+Rage), and most recently Fodder Tosser (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Fodder+Tosser).
- Nine Lives (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Nine+Lives) shows 9 cats in the art. One of them is Kemba, Kha Regent (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kemba%2C+Kha+Regent).
- The flavor text of Squirrel Sovereign (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Squirrel+Sovereign) references the flavor text of Goblin King (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Goblin+King).
- The backsides of the magic cards have a pen mark on the "Deckmaster" logo. It's a printing error that wasn't corrected.
- Wizard's Lightning (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Wizard%27s+Lightning) and Wizard's Retort (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Wizard%27s+Retort) show the same scene.
- Bösium Strip (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=B%C3%B6sium+Strip) is an anagram of Mobius strip. The artwork features a Mobius strip.
- You can see plans for building Karn, Silver Golem (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Karn%2C+Silver+Golem) in the background of Stroke of Genius (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Stroke+of+Genius).
- The Innistrad block has a total of 666 cards. Coincidence? Probably.
- Remember how I said Fblthp gets lost easily? He's also in Captive Audience (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Captive+Audience).
- Shark Typhoon (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Shark+Typhoon) is a reference to the Sharknado movie. Oh who am I kidding, you already knew that.
- The art of Grave Betrayal (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Grave+Betrayal) resembles Shivan Dragon (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Shivan+Dragon). As these two cards are from different planes, this is likely a coincidence.
- The decree cycle from Scourge all show Karona, False God (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Karona%2C+False+God). Or rather her shadow is shown.
- The Lament for Bala Ged is shared over 4 cards. Yarok, the Desecrated (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Yarok%2C+the+Desecrated), Yarok's Wavecrasher (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Yarok%27s+Wavecrasher), Yarok's Fenlurker (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Yarok%27s+Fenlurker), and Healer of the Glade (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Healer+of+the+Glade).
- Yarok grieves within the waste
Of Bala Ged's corrupted land.
Yarok's waters rush and rage
Where armies bled into the sand.
Yarok's nightmares lurk and wait
Where dark despair is near at hand.
Grief (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Grief) and rage and nightmares fade
Where hope and comfort make their stand.
-
- Nine Lives (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Nine+Lives) shows 9 cats in the art. One of them is Kemba, Kha Regent (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kemba%2C+Kha+Regent).
There's more, actually!
In the art of Nine Lives (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Nine+Lives), we can see:
- Marisi, Breaker of the Coil (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Marisi%2C+Breaker+of+the+Coil)
- Jazal Goldmane (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Jazal+Goldmane)

- Kaheera, the Orphanguard (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kaheera%2C+the+Orphanguard)
- Arahbo, Roar of the World (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Arahbo%2C+Roar+of+the+World)
- Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mirri%2C+Weatherlight+Duelist)

Man, I love this thread.
One recent-ish one that I don't think has been mentioned yet is the art for Ingenuity Engine (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Ingenuity+Engine). It's quite well known, but for those who are yet to come across it, it features (I think) 15 famous artifacts from throughout Magic's history.
I won't name them here in case people want to have a look for themselves, but it's a very cool easter egg in my opinion.
Edit:
Link to the answers for those who have had a go and want to know:
https://www.reddit.com/r/magicTCG/comments/jsc5sv/all_artifacts_from_ingenuity_engines_art_yet/
A couple of these are a little dubious IMO so you could probably call it 13 or 14, but it's still very cool.

Alright, let's try this. Let me get a closer look at the artwork.
I can make out:
Darksteel Ingot (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Darksteel+Ingot)
Sol Ring (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sol+Ring)
Rings of Brighthearth (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Rings+of+Brighthearth)
Sword of Body and Mind (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sword+of+Body+and+Mind)
Sword of Light and Shadow (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sword+of+Light+and+Shadow)
Door to Nothingness (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Door+to+Nothingness)
Sensei's Divining Top (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sensei%27s+Divining+Top)
Commander's Sphere (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Commander%27s+Sphere) (just the bottom half)
Behemoth Sledge (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Behemoth+Sledge)
An orrery of some kind (doesn't look like any I've seen)
A book
So I got 9 out of 15.
-
I see one more in Ingenuity Engine (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Ingenuity+Engine), top left: skullclamp (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Skullclamp)
-
There is one hiding in plain sight... Mana Vault (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mana+Vault).
Also pretty sure that the Orrery is Vedalken Orrery (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Vedalken+Orrery)
-
I don't think anyone's said this before, but Azure Fleet Admiral (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Azure+Fleet+Admiral) and Crimson Fleet Commodore (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Crimson+Fleet+Commodore) are having a call-response conversation in their flavor texts. It goes like this:
Crimson:
"Please steer your fleet clear of the waters west of Scrub Isle. It would be a shame to incinerate (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Incinerate) such exquisite maritime craftsmanship." - Commodore Axurik, to Admiral Yelise
Azure:
"Your concern for my safety is touching, but as long as your gunners remain reliably erratic, I see no reason to change course." - Admiral Yelise, to Commodore Axurik
-
- Gallantry (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gallantry) and Repentant Vampire (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Repentant+Vampire) are the same scene.
Just wanted to add a small detail about this one: the characters depicted on these two cards are based on the characters of Buffy and Angel from the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Odyssey/Trivia) :)
-
Anther couple that weren't mentioned:
- The figure in Assassinate (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Assassinate) has been killed by the one in Royal Assassin (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Royal+Assassin) (same knife, and look at the "ink" marks)
- If you take the first letters in the flavor text of Coral Trickster (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Coral+Trickster), you obtain "Twiddle (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Twiddle)", and the two cards have the same effect.
- The card "Target minotaur (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Target+Minotaur)" from Unstable is a reference to the many minotaurs being depicted as the targets of offensive spells in MTG (Lightning Blast (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Lightning+Blast), Dizzy Spell (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Dizzy+Spell), Roots (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Roots), Dark Banishing (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Dark+Banishing) etc.)
- In the clouds from the art of Dreamcatcher (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Dreamcatcher), you can find a dragon, a phoenix and a sliver.
- If you look closely at the Desert Twister (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Desert+Twister) art from Commander 2014, you can see that a shark emerging from the tornado (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tornado) :)
- Pemmin's Aura (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Pemmin%27s+Aura) is an anagram of "I Am Superman", a reference to the card Morphling (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Morphling), that was nicknamed "Superman" because of its many abilities.
-
A friend of mine just alerted me to another new Easter Egg.
In the new art for the borderless Imperial Recruiter (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Imperial+Recruiter) from MH2, you can see two of his most common recruits hanging around in the background...

Spellgorger Weird (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Spellgorger+Weird) and Spellkeeper Weird (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Spellkeeper+Weird) feature each other, just like the original post.

Have you guys also been watching Nickachu? Good stuff!

Let's see if you can find the Easter egg in the art Magali Villeneuve has done for Kiora, Wrath of the Tides (Arena only card) :)

The funny part is, I THOUGHT that to myself upon first glance, but assumed it couldn't be so simple!

Even more easter eggs!
The creature lands from Forgotten Realms all have the image of their creature in the frame, sometimes in the negative space.
There is a short story in the Ikoria cards Forbidden Friendship (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Forbidden+Friendship), Capture Sphere (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Capture+Sphere), and Cathartic Reunion (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Cathartic+Reunion).
Normally Fall of the Titans (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Fall+of+the+Titans) wouldn't be able to destroy Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Ulamog%2C+the+Ceaseless+Hunger), but it will if you first use Bonds of Mortality (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Bonds+of+Mortality).
The second conspiracy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Conspiracy) set was first spoiled as being Conspiracy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Conspiracy): the Reign of Brago with 221 cards. The next day, the MTG twitter account posted a picture of Brago getting stabbed in the neck by Kaya, with the caption "Due to unforseen circumstances, Brago will not be making an appearance in our new Conspiracy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Conspiracy) set". They renamed the set Conspiracy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Conspiracy): The Empty Throne and decreased the card count to 220 cards.
A little while later, an image of Marchesa on the throne was spoiled, the set name was changed to Conspiracy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Conspiracy): Take the Crown, and the card count was back up to 221.
You can see the Mirari (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Mirari) in the Cabal Coffers (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Cabal+Coffers).
Champion of the Perished (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Champion+of+the+Perished) has more than a few references to Champion of the Parish (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Champion+of+the+Parish). You can see their death in Defenestrate (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Defenestrate).
The different abilities for Bow of Nylea (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Bow+of+Nylea) each have a result that increases from 1 to 4. The abilities are also a reference to the 4 seasons... or so I'm told. Not sure which ability coresponds to which season.
The five clans of Tarkir are each based around a different culture. Abzan are Persian, Jeskai are Shaolin, Mardu are Mongolian, Sultai are the Khmer, and Temur are Siberian.
You can see Guardians of Meletis (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Guardians+of+Meletis) in the background of Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kynaios+and+Tiro+of+Meletis).
The basic lands from Commander 2016 each have a shooting star in the image, similar to the Wizards logo.
The original art for Birds of Paradise (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Birds+of+Paradise) was supposed to be for Tropical Island (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tropical+Island), but the birds were too prominent and the island (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Island) too distant. Not wanting to scrap (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Scrap) the art, the design team just made an entirely new card.
Relentless Dead (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Relentless+Dead) shares the same location as Endless Ranks of the Dead (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Endless+Ranks+of+the+Dead).
The Clue token from Modern Horizons 2 also appears in Hard Evidence (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Hard+Evidence).
The Tainted lands are all modified versions of a basic land from Odyssey.
The artifact lands from original Mirrodin all show up in their respective Sun's Zenith. They also appear as basics in New Phyrexia.
One of the arts of Goblin Chirurgeon (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Goblin+Chirurgeon) shows them stitching together a LLanowar Elves (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Llanowar+Elves), Uthden Troll (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Uthden+Troll), and the aven from Natural Selection (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Natural+Selection).
Elvish Healer (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Elvish+Healer) and Cooperation (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Cooperation) reference each other.
Tribute Mage (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tribute+Mage) is holding a Sword of the Meek (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sword+of+the+Meek).

The Sword of the Meek (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sword+of+the+Meek) also appears in Return to Dust (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Return+to+Dust) and Krosan Grip (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Krosan+Grip) :)
Also don't know if it was said already, but Sword of Vengeance (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sword+of+Vengeance) is the sword of Akroma, angel of Wrath (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Akroma%2C+Angel+of+Wrath).

I’m glad you guys notice this stuff and point it out, I always miss it.

I just noticed one that I had never seen, despite having Oxidize (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Oxidize) in my binder. Oxidize (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Oxidize) shows a rusty, destroyed Platinum Angel (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Platinum+Angel):

And here's another: In the art of Inexorable Blob (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Inexorable+Blob), in the picture hanged in the Hallway, you can see the guy from the Ancestral Recall (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Ancestral+Recall) art:

There is also a ratchet bomb (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=de&card=Ratchet+Bomb) on the ground as well.
The Voltaic Servant (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=de&card=Voltaic+Servant) has instead of a left hand a Voltaic Key (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=de&card=Voltaic+Key) from Urza's Saga (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=de&card=Urza%27s+Saga).

Well spotted! Yes. It is. He won the Magic Invitational. His prize was getting to design a card and getting his likeness on said card. There were 11 such tournaments. And therefore 11 such winners. From 1997 to 2007.

We should probably just get them all out of the way (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Out+of+the+Way). Keep in mind that for a few of these the resemblance only applies to the original art.
Kai Budde - Voidmage Prodigy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Voidmage+Prodigy)
Tiago Chan - Snapcaster Mage (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Snapcaster+Mage)
Jon Finkel - Shadowmage Infiltrator (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Shadowmage+Infiltrator)

Mike Long - Rootwater Thief (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Rootwater+Thief) (not the merfolk in the picture, Mike Long is the human)

It's been a while but here are some more easter eggs.
Interpret the Signs (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Interpret+the+Signs) from Journey into Nyx shows the set symbol for Dragons of Tarkir; a set that hadn't been released at the time.
You can see the outline of Zhalfir in Zhalfirin Void (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Zhalfirin+Void). It matches the outline from Teferi's Protection (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Teferi%27s+Protection).
There are three 0/0 zombie army tokens from War of the Spark (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=War+of+the+Spark), each with an increasing number of eternals on them.
Phil Foglio signed their name on the pot in Recycle (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Recycle).
Sometimes the gatherer rulings for cards will have little jokes in them. Here are some of my favorites.
- If the second ability of Revel in Riches (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Revel+in+Riches) causes you to win the game, please refrain from throwing your Treasure tokens into the air as this may distract or injure other players.
- Void Winnower (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Void+Winnower): Yes, your opponent can't even. We know.
- While resolving Search for Blex, you may put any number of the cards into your hand, even if you don't have enough life to cover it. We'll assume you have a plan that's better than “and then I'll lose the game.”
- If you're drafting with other sets and draft basic land cards other than the five mentioned above (including Wastes (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Wastes) and the “Snow-Covered” versions of the typical basic lands), those cards will be in your sideboard and the activated ability of Sovereign's Realm (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sovereign%27s+Realm) will allow you to play them. Also, invite me to your next draft—your group sounds rad.
- If Lovestruck Beast (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Lovestruck+Beast)'s power and toughness are reduced to 1/1, it learns that loving oneself is the first step on the true path to happiness, and it can attack even if you control no other 1/1 creatures.
- Protection from Humans refers only to the creature type Human. As far as Yawgmoth is concerned, you, your opponents, and planeswalkers aren't Humans.
- If you really want, you can choose zero modes for Rankle's triggered ability, but carefully consider (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Consider) the hidden costs in not entertaining someone titled Master of Pranks.
- Blim, Comedic Genius (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Blim%2C+Comedic+Genius): The player who was dealt damage can't refuse your generous gift (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Generous+Gift). That would be rude.
- If The Meathook Massacre (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=The+Meathook+Massacre) enters the battlefield and it wasn't cast (or it was cast without paying its mana cost), X will be 0. The first ability will trigger, but it won't be much of a massacre (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Massacre).
-
Sometimes the gatherer rulings for cards will have little jokes in them.
Apex Devastator (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Apex+Devastator) (the creature with quadruple cascade) - "... the stack can get messy, and we wish (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Wish) you luck."

Hey so remember back in my first post where I showed the link between Uktabi Orangutan (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Uktabi+Orangutan) and Uktabi Kong (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Uktabi+Kong)? Well now we have Kibo, Uktabi Prince (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kibo%2C+Uktabi+Prince) from Jumpstart 2022. The new art for Uktabi Orangutan (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Uktabi+Orangutan) still has those two monkeys in the background.
The basic lands from All Will Be One (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=All+Will+Be+One) all tried to fit the phyrexian symbol in the art. Some are more clear than others. These lands also form a panorama.
Resistance Skywarden (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Resistance+Skywarden) references Ogre Resister (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Ogre+Resister).
In D&D 5e, one of the material components for Tasha's Hideous Laughter (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Tasha%27s+Hideous+Laughter) is a feather waved in the air. This is visible in the artwork for the card.
I think everyone noticed this, but whatever. Gingerbrute (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gingerbrute) is based on the Gingerbread Man fairytale. "Run, run, run as fast as you can! You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man!". Gingerbrute (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gingerbrute) can only be blocked by creatures that are equally fast.
Shadowfax, Lord of Horses (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Shadowfax%2C+Lord+of+Horses) has reminder text to show you the meaning of haste. Get it?
Gleeful Demolition (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Gleeful+Demolition)'s flavor text references Kuldotha Rebirth (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kuldotha+Rebirth). It makes sense considering how similar they are.
The cookie from the Throne of Eldraine (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Throne+of+Eldraine) trailer appears as Syr Ginger, the Meal Ender (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Syr+Ginger%2C+the+Meal+Ender).
Gnomes may be extinct across the multiverse. The only times that non-artifact gnomes appear are in the D&D sets and Quarum Trench Gnomes (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Quarum+Trench+Gnomes) from legends.
Veteran Bodyguard (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Veteran+Bodyguard) looks like Lou Ferrigno.
Raptor Hatchling (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Raptor+Hatchling) and Bear Cub (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Bear+Cub) have similar flavor texts.
The Wasteland (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Wasteland) from eternal masters shows a destroyed City of Brass (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=City+of+Brass).
-
Holy (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Holy) shit, that Lou Ferrigno resemblance is uncanny.
-
- Likewise, Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Yennett%2C+Cryptic+Sovereign) references the number 3.
Each word in Yennet's flavor text has an odd number of letters

So prince Kibo, Uktabi Prince (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Kibo%2C+Uktabi+Prince) is the child of the monkeys in Uktabi Kong (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Uktabi+Kong)?

Raptor Hatchling (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Raptor+Hatchling) and Bear Cub (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Bear+Cub) have similar flavor texts.
Interestingly, Jumpstart 2022's Dragon Mage (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Dragon+Mage&set=J22&collector_number=77) and Starter 1999's Goblin Lore (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Goblin+Lore&set=S99&collector_number=104) share similar text like that, just minus someone having a retort. Probably because the dragon killed them.

That would be hilarious.
It's pretty hard to see on the actual card, but Dory and Marlin also appear in the aquarium behind Lagrella the Magpie (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Lagrella%2C+the+Magpie).
Speaking of fish, the flavor text of Exotic Pets (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Exotic+Pets) mentions a guy named Altonio, most likely an expendable lackey (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Expendable+Lackey) who was sent to sleep with the fishes (https://cards.deckstats.net/magiccard.php?utf8=1&lng=en&card=Sleep+with+the+Fishes) by Raffine.
(In fact, I only noticed the fish in Lagrella's background because I was trying to spot Altonio's corpse xD)
