General Magic / Spell Queller Questions
« on: August 01, 2016, 09:48:40 pm »
Hey guys. So spell queller is obviously becoming a problem in Standard events right now. What I'm wondering is this... Say I cast a legendary like Olivia, Mobilized for War and someone counters with Spell Queller. Since the card is technically in exile can I cast another Olivia, Mobilized for War and would the legendary rule then make the new one permanent on the battlefield and the exiled one would just be useless?

Deck Reviews / B/G Gitrog Aggro for FNM
« on: July 25, 2016, 05:49:22 pm »
This is the deck I'm thinking about taking to FNM this week. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated, especially for tempo since that is everything in aggro!

Since this is a new build I don't expect it to go perfectly, but so far it looks like I can consistently get the Gitrog Monster or Morkrut Necropod out by turn 3-4. Occasionally in a longer game I can have them on the board together swinging for 13 damage with menace and deathtouch. Bloodbriar really reaps the benefits of land sacs.

General Magic / Massdrop MTG

*Disclaimer* Someone tell me if this is not allowed, I swear I'm not trying to advertise for this site.

I just wanted to share that I've found some great Magic stuff on Massdrop recently in case others are interested! I got the Art History tokens set (Eeeeek, so perfect for me!) and there are lots of other things on there as well. They change out their merch pretty frequently so check back often for cool stuff. I have purchased other games like Boss Monster there and have been happy with their prices and shipping.

Deck Reviews / Self Sacrifice B/W (Standard)
« on: July 14, 2016, 07:36:27 pm »

Current idea for standard B/W deck. Inspired by Scott-Vargas' pro-tour G/B Aristocrats deck and Blood Artist decks. Should also play fairly inexpensively.

Let me know what you think. I'm actually really liking this deck and considering building it after the new set release. I've been wanting to try something like it for awhile but B/W just didn't have quite the push it needed. Selfless Spirit really kicks it up a notch as well as some of the other new cards and I think there are a multitude of combos you can pull off here.

General Magic / Brainstorming Deck Ideas (Standard)
« on: July 13, 2016, 11:31:36 pm »
What are you all thinking for standard decks using the new Eldritch Moon cards? I would love to nerd out and collaborate with you guys on what types of decks, which individual cards, and what play styles you think will become effective in the upcoming months.

I personally think some tribal decks could become viable in this set and be really neat. B/W seems like it could be really awesome as well.

I am so excited for the new set but also so overwhelmed with everything (in life and in Magic) right now that I have no clue where to even start as far as deck building.

I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!  :)

Deck Reviews / Impromptu Pauper Help
« on: June 27, 2016, 10:27:04 pm »
Hey guys, so I have been invited to play pauper with a friend at the shop he goes to tomorrow. Trouble is I don't have a ready-made pauper deck so I'm trying to throw one together. I don't have time really to go out and buy cards so I'm working with what I've got.

I've never played this format so I'm not sure what direction to go. Help is appreciated!

Here is the first draft I threw together:

I can probably cut out the blue entirely, but I'm entertaining the idea. The thing I was really hoping for was Nantuko Husk and Unruly Mob combo. Keep sacrificing things and pulling them out of the graveyard. It's all over the place right now, and all cards listed are cards I have at least 2 or more copies of.

Deck Reviews / Westvale Seige
« on: June 23, 2016, 01:33:07 am »

In this deck I focused on alluding to the Westvale Abbey in the card art and themes, so it looks very attractive in the visual spoiler I think. There are lots of architectural elements in the cards' themselves.

The strategy is kind of a mid-rangey one. You are going to hold your enemy under seige. Cut off their resources by tapping their creatures, chipping away at their life, and being faster than they are. Bolster your own resources with life gain, counters, and synergy. When the time comes, call forth Ormendahl, Profane Prince and Odric, Lunarch Marshal for truly overwhelming odds.

Have fun! Let me know if you have any suggestions, but respect my theme or the illusion will be shattered!

Deck Reviews / Skeri's Scariest Vampires Yet
« on: June 15, 2016, 08:37:10 pm »
I know that we've discussed my B/R tribal vampire deck at length in a previous topic, but I thought I would repost it here as it is now almost completely different than the original. I have taken out a lot of the ramp instants and added more creatures. I worked extensively on tempo for this aggro style deck and it has become very competitive at FNM. Sideboard is effective and I'm hoping to mainboard another Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet to complete the picture.

I'm very open to suggestions if anyone has them. I have a full play set of Insolent Neonate that I have been on the fence about putting in so thoughts on that would be appreciated.

Thanks to everyone in the last post for all the help with it, I think you will really enjoy the way it looks now, I know I have really enjoyed playing it and building it from scratch. I still have hope that Eldritch Moon will offer up some more vamps to work with and put them on the map in standard.

General Magic / Help me go Commander
« on: June 10, 2016, 04:40:31 pm »
Alright, in a previous forum topic we discussed playing EDH Commander decks. I would love to build one now except I have no idea what I'm doing. I want to base the deck around Sheoldred, Whispering One. I happen to have a copy of her laying around and I really love that card.

So what do I need to do to get started? I'm thinking about running mono black and playing just the grossest most black style possible. I'm thinking undead, infect, graveyard digging, swampwalk, sacrifices, and all the things that make black decks evil and awesome.

Help and advice on how to do this?

General Magic / Deck Building Themes
« on: June 01, 2016, 10:05:02 pm »
I have noticed since I started playing that I really like tribal or themed decks. I have four decks at home that I play with regularly and they are zombie, vampire, spirit, and wolf/werewolf themed. I try to make the art, effects, and cards that I choose all fit in somehow to the theme and it's really fun that way. I am also hyper-organized so I like to sort things and make a well themed deck more than I like winning half the time ::). It's very difficult for me to put cards in my decks that don't fit my idea of the theme and strategy.

How do you guys deck build? Do you choose a card you like and build around it? Build strictly for strategy? For effects? For to win? Let me know!

General Magic / Combo and Rules Question
« on: May 27, 2016, 04:44:36 pm »
I'm wondering about ways to use the rules and card effects together to my advantage so I'm trying to figure out what works. I'm currently playing/building a standard deck that utilizes madness and discard features as well as several legendary creatures. So here is the situation I'm wondering about:

Suppose I have one legendary creature out on the battlefield and another copy of it in my hand, such as Drana, Liberator of Malakir, and I also have Indulgent Aristocrat on the battlefield as well as Olivia, Mobilized for War. Could I play the second Drana in my hand, discard a card to trigger Olivia's ability to give it haste and put +1+1 counter on it, attack with all cards activating Drana's ability to give +1+1 to all attacking creatures, and then sacrifice the first Drana to Indulgent Aristocrat for additional counters since it would have to leave the battlefield anyway?

It would be an ideal situation, but if it came up could I legally do it?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the legendary creature rule resolves after combat yes? Since I'm playing with madness I could always just discard any additional legendary creatures I have in my hand if they are already on the battlefield so they wouldn't be wasted or dead in hand, but it would be cooler to use their abilities or sacrifice them for counters if opportunity presents itself.

Advice with that is much appreciated!

Deck Reviews / Madness Counter Vampires
« on: May 23, 2016, 06:32:50 pm »
So I'm having a very difficult time playing at the shop I go to for FNM. Most of the people who play there are playing tier one net decks and pro tour top 8 type stuff.

My competitive nature has been awakened and I'm also stubborn. I don't want to copy a deck or modify a top 8, I want to build a deck from scratch (even if it takes forever). I'm looking at saving up for cards and slowly putting together a competitive deck. This is my rough draft (very rough) and it would be the first time I've ever run planeswalkers (I'm still not sure about them).

I'm trying to run an aggressive deck where I can place counters on my creatures to make them larger and larger each turn. Generating tokens as fodder and playing at madness costs are the strategy. The sideboard includes more control.

https://deckstats.net/decks/63728/497849-madness-counters-vampires/en

Please help and let me know what might work and what just doesn't. I feel like I'm a little all over the place.

General Magic / Planeswalker weaknesses?
« on: May 23, 2016, 05:30:22 pm »
I know that everyone loves planeswalkers, so for starters this is not a planeswalker bashing post  ;)

How can I compete against decks that run multiple different planeswalkers? I am going to play To the Slaughter in one of my decks, but I was wondering if anyone had any competitive success in playing against them without using planeswalkers in response? This is mostly a strategy question so I'm interested in hearing how people prepare their decks and play strategically to deal with opponents who have multiple planeswalkers at their disposal. I'm still fairly new at the game so I'm wondering if they have any weaknesses or quirks that I'm unaware of.

General Magic / Card Art
« on: May 17, 2016, 10:58:56 pm »
I have an art degree and have worked in the past as an artist and one of the big lures for me in Magic was the card art so I would like to ask:

What card has your favorite art? Why? What makes it so captivating?

I personally love topplegeist.  The colors and style are amazing and, even though I'm pretty sure it's digital art, it has this hazy brushstroke look to it like an old oil painting. I just love the composition, lighting, and how the artist leads your eye from right to left (which is backward from how we normally read things). Plus he's so stinking cute.

My other favorite is Accursed Witch, she is stunning and there are tons of minute details that just put it over the top. The artist on that one managed to get a really dramatic depth of field that just sucks you in and fixes you to the subject matter. I love how the art tells such a complete story when you flip it to Infectious Curse. And all in such tiny picture planes!

Anyway, thoughts, comments, and good discussion are what I'm after! Also if anyone mods cards I would be interested in hearing about what materials you use. Of if you love/hate mods, tell me 'bout it.
