Commander Discussion / Re: Simic didn't need this, but I love it anyway
« on: February 14, 2024, 09:00:11 pm »
Yeah, Altar of the brood would get very silly.  The only deck I currently have it in is Azorious, so I can not slot it in there.  Honestly the decks I currently run are not a good fit for it.  My merfolk are low cmc fast aggro, so the deck doesn't ramp enough to use doppelgang.  My Claw of progress deck ramps enough, but I feel like it would just be win-more there.  It wouldn't be a huge boost to my Riku deck, but I might slot it in anyway just as another fun splashy spell to copy.  Also, making copies of the twinning staff could lead to something epic.  If I really wanted to do much with Doppelgang I think I would need to build a new deck.  I would maybe go URG for impact tremors style effects, or UBG for the black tutors.

On a side note, I did some math and with 17 mana you could x=5, target eternal witness and 4 lands that enter untapped.  Put 20 lands and 5 Eternal Witness on the battlefield, return Doppelgang and 4 other cards from you yard to hand. and repeat.  You don't even need any token or mana buffs.

In Temur, you can make a nonlegendary copy of Magus Lucea Kane and doppelgang that xD

Now if things are expensive and required for a bunch of nut busting combos we can then bring that up for debate.
You ban them for the combo, not for the price.

OP its funny you should say that about this set and SNC. From what i hear they took unused art from snc and added it to this set.

I suspected that. Now it's been pretty much confirmed.

Well, It's been exactly 5 years since the last Ravnica block, I guess they need to meet their "Ravnica quota" :P

Calling it now, Zendikar 4.0 in 2025 and Innistrad 4.0 in 2026!

If barrier to entry was really a problem, all reserved list cards should be banned automatically, because their reserved list status means there is a finite number of them around in the world. So while WotC could technically print a Jeweled Lotus and Dockside Extortionist for every Commander player on the planet and give them away for free, they can't do the same for Timetwister & co.

The sudden shift in fashion for everyone does leave it feeling like the cards should've been from Capenna.

I heard somewhere that much of the art is unused pieces originally meant for the Capenna set.

Not hard to imagine...

Yes.

Havengul Lich will gain the activated ability of Geth, so now you have two creatures with the same ability. You can activate either of them, but you still need to pay any cost.

Commander Discussion / Re: Removing Enchantments
« on: January 27, 2024, 11:21:14 pm »
The problem with enchantment-only removal is that it's fairly narrow. It's rare not to see any enchantments and they are often high-impact, but not always. At least artifact removal hits mana rocks and things.

To be fair, cards that remove enchantments and nothing else (like Erase) are pretty rare because they are so narrow, and have been extensively power-crept.

Peace and Quiet is similar to barrier breach in that it kills multiple targets.
Allay has buyback, but it's pretty mana intensive.
Ray of Revelation is also nice but has a two-color identity.
Back to Nature and Tempest of Light if you need mass removal.

This is something that has bugged me for a while, and after seeing the first wave of spoilers, I think the whole detective flavor feels a bit forced in Ravnica - especially when they already have the perfect world for it: Capenna, the plane of demon mob bosses and gangsters.

The story could have revolved around angels trying to bring back law and order in the city. It could have also been a good opportunity to explore Old Capenna (though I imagine not much is left after TWO Phyrexian invasions).

Because paying 3 mana to maybe get something doesn't seem worth it.

It's not terrible for a land, imho.
Other similar cards also require you to jump through hoops.

Edit: I forgot the Slowlands, I run them if I do not forget they exist while deckbuilding.  Also I mono-color decks I usually use snow covered basics because I love Extraplanar Lens.

I don't have Lens, but I do run Scrying Sheets in my mono-blue deck, and I plan to upgrade my other monocolored decks with snow lands sooner or later.

I am a big fan of Shadowmoor/Eventide filter lands.
They can be awkward in multiples, but for commander they are perfect.

I also learned to appreciate Exotic Orchard. I used to cut it from every precon, but now I play it in almost every deck.

Besides that, my manabases are pretty standard (fetches, shocks/triomes, battlebond lands, utility lands depending on the specific deck, and some basics to round it up).

Commander Discussion / Re: Why are Proxies so relatively rare?
« on: December 26, 2023, 07:17:08 pm »
EDH players I know generally accept proxies.

As I built more and more decks, my philosophy has been to own 1 copy of each card and then make proxy copies for my different decks. I rarely proxy cards I don't own bcs I already have way too many cards I want to play, and not enough slots in my decks, so having access to all cards would lead to decision paralysis.

Threefold Thunderhulk with Yarok the Descrated onboard is 6/6 with 6 Gnome Tokens.
It enters with the counters, it doesn't get them on ETB, so it is still a 3/3 on entry. That said, it will get 6 1/1 Gnomes on entry.

One weird interaction with Threefold Thunderhulk is that - if you get 2 ETB triggers - you can resolve one, then sac the newly made gnome tokens to pump Thunderhulk, which will then make more tokens based on its buffed power. It costs a ton of mana, though.

Btw, this is another difference between Yarok and Doubling Season. Yarok is like copying ETB abilities (each copy resolves independently). In contrast, season replaces an action with another ("make 3 tokens" becomes "make 6 tokens", but if you have effects that triggere whenever you make one or more tokens, they would only trigger once, bcs it's technically one action).

My old LGS organized 2HG Commander events every now and then. We came up with a house rule that players could only share up to 10 cards with their partner.

I think Calix, Guided by Fate could be a better option than Yenna (in Standard, even).
Anikthea, Hand of Erebos is probably better overall, but she's more risky bcs you have to exile the Three Blind Mice.
