General Magic / Re: Deckstats Competition - Make a [GOR] Deck!
« on: September 24, 2018, 06:33:32 pm »

#NOTE

A deck that is similar to a deck already posted on this thread, will be overlooked by me, in favour of the first to be posted.
You may use any card that is in Standard after Guilds of Ravnica is released so (Ixalan/Dominaria/M19).
There is no colour restriction, so if you wanted, you can make the deck 5 colours.
Also, you don't need to make a 15 card sideboard, but it will improve your chances of winning. (So you might want to.)

Any other questions, please Private Message me - Rather than posting questions in this thread.

If I was unclear then I meant you may create a deck using the Ixalan, Rivals, Dominaria and M19 sets.
I also said for you to PM me instead of posting here. This is only for deck lists.

Competition time, Deckstats Members!

I want you, the community, to design a Standard deck, based on this card from - Guilds of Ravnica.

I will grade using the following criteria:

Creativity - Something that shows interesting synergy.
Uniqueness - Something that I haven't seen before - Something that isn't a net deck.
Effectiveness - Something that I can see winning an FNM or Standard Tournament with your card selection.

I will award you with the following Karma: (Thanks to Nils)

1st - 10
2nd - 5
3rd - 1

Post your decks below, the competition will finish fourteen days from today -
Friday the 5th of October @6PM GMT(In time for pre-release) - This deadline is final, unless I deem otherwise, so do not ask.

Hey guys, it's official.

Standard won out, again! Not to worry if that isn't your prefered format. I will be running Pauper after Standard, and then Modern after Pauper.

Even if you aren't interested in the formats for the Deckstats competitions, please do still participate. Even if you are a new player, or new to the forums, you have nothing to lose by posting your decks!  :)

See you soon! ;)

Lol that says it all.....

THE GOLGARI SWARM

Necromancers · Misftis · Justifiably Angry Gorgons
You have a pragmatic view on life and would to absolutely anything to protect your community. The Golgari Swarm is made up of misfits and vagabonds who take great pride in their outlier status; and guild members will fiercely protect their own. You are practical and straightforward, and don’t see the point in trying to appeal to the masses; your friends are all you need.
You would also do well in Rakdos!

You put the bond in Vagabond Rob!  :P

General Magic / Guilds of Ravnica (Spoilers!)
« on: September 03, 2018, 03:25:11 pm »
Before I start with the pictures, Guilds of Ravnica have introduced 4 new mechanics.
This is pretty unique, I assume this is because this 'block' extends over 3 sets all within Ravnica.

Jump-Start - Cast a card from your graveyard, by discarding a card, and paying any additional costs. (The card is then exiled.)

A powerful mechanic, that would work especially well with Madness. (This will have implications for graveyard interaction, and possibly necessitate Sentinel Totem/ Relic of Progenitus)

Surveil - Look at the top card of your library. You may put it into your graveyard.

A self-milling mechanic that would go especially well in Dredge decks, or Delerium decks. (Grim Flayer/ Emrakul, the Promised End)
It seems to be a pseudo-scry mechanic.

Undergrowth - X = the number of creature cards in your graveyard.

Another mechanic that would do well in a Dredge or Zombie deck.

Mentor - Whenever 'this' creature attacks, put a +1/+1 counter on target attacking creature with lesser power.

Another pseudo mechanic that is reminiscent of Battalion (Boros Legion) a creature needs to attack to trigger the ability. This time with counters instead of a temporary boost.

In conclusion - We have a lot of new mechanics, three of which are tailored specifically for you to utilise your graveyard. With Scavenger Grounds gone with the rotation of Amonkhet, we will have to look to sideboard solutions (Silent Gravestone/ Sentinel Totem) or shuffling (The Mending of Dominaria) to deal with any potential combos that may arise, especially in Standard.
Mentor, is an interesting mechanic, as it makes token and aggro decks a threat. But, will Goblin Chainwhirler still be too oppressive for Token decks to function in tournament play?

Here we go! What you've been waiting for! (Not really)

SHOCK LANDS! (Are you excited? You should be!)

I am very impressed with the released cards so far. Wotc seems to have upped the power level of standard, but at the same time made cards for a stagnant modern, going as far as to create reprints of various and somewhat expensive modern staples, hopefully, to make them more accessible to all!

Cards that stand out:
Quasiduplicate (3 mana to duplicate a creature - which makes use of Jump-Start)
Emmara, Soul of the Accord (Possesses synergy with Convoke and tokens for 2 mana)
Legion Warboss (Goblin aggro tribal is being pushed with this card, with its ability to generate tokens and increase their strength)
Conclave Tribunal (4 mana with Convoke to replace Cast Out - Potentially with tokens this could cost as much as, 1 mana!)
Ral, Izzet Viceroy (A new 5 mana planeswalker. While not Chandra, Torch of Defiance, her replacement is not that far beneath her. Loot +1 ability that utilises the graveyard, -3  Deal damage to target creature = the number of instants/sorcery cards in your graveyard. His -8 (5 loyalty init) = anytime you cast an instant or sorcery deal 4 damage to any target and draw two cards = win more.)

Yea, I don't really play Standard (though being out of work having had surgery I may delve back into it some when I get to the point of being able to drive and go to the LGS- there's one within walking distance from my house but being on crutches...). I thought about putting it in my casual Mono Green devotion deck but I couldn't decide if it was worth it as a two of in a deck that already runs pretty well.

Hope you recover quickly.  :)
If you need any standard advice, I'm always available. Well, relatively speaking.  :P
Hopefully more spoilers will be released as it gets towards mid September. More importantly, Kaladesh and Amonkhet will both rotate, which will see a shake up in the meta. = less oppressive control and red decks.

How much play is Goreclaw seeing in Standard?

Unless you are brewing it for an LGS I haven't come across a deck with it, not one which is competitive,  at least. Mono Green @ tournament level has more efficient ways of ramping. Not to say that card isn't good. As a negative it is legendary, costs 4 which is on upper curve, and doesn't give an advantage as it hits the battlefield. There are too many wraths and spot removal options that make it less effective than Vine Mare.

This is also starting to slide off topic. So let's try to at least keep it in line with Guilds of Ravnica.

I think that's about right. The mana costs are high for both, especially Impervious Greatwurm.
Since you can't play it in limited, the odds of it being in Standard are very low. It just costs too much! Even with convoke, why would you want to tap four creatures when you can just use them to swing at your opponent? Also if you have four creatures, that board state is already pretty oppressive. It just seems like that win more bomb. Despite being a 16/16 with indestructible, it doesn't have trample and Settle the Wreckage will be a mainstay in most white based standard decks after rotation!

Introducing two cards. Impervious Greatwurm (Mythic Buy a Box promo), and the other Macabre Hatchery (no doubt the release promo.)

What are your opinions? Do you think these cards will be popular in any format?
Do you think Convoke will be returning, along with Populate?
