General Magic / Re: Games you've enjoyed

Last week, I had a blast playing my Karn, Silver Golem deck against 2 other players (Queen Marchesa and Yasova Dragonclaw). The deck rarely wins, but it's the kind of deck that allows me to play with old cards that don't fit in other decks (e.g. Tawnos's Coffin, Arena of the Ancients, etc) so I always derive some pleasure playing it.

So I have a Null Brooch out and my hand is empty as I needed my Ensnaring Bridge to keep Yasova away from me. The Queen Marchesa player is trying to pull off various "you-win-the-game" cards, which I counter with Null Brooch easily. The Yasova player can't attack because of Ensnaring Bridge and both myself and the Queen Marchesa player have no creatures in play so her theft ability is irrelevant.

I almost had the game. I had a lot of artifacts, including Unwinding Clock, and all the good mana rocks, and I was feeling good about my impending victory. The Yasova player baited me into countering an Evolutionary Leap with my Null Brooch. I hadn't played against his Yasova deck in almost a year so I forgot what was in it; I figured denying him a creature tutor was the right call because I didn't want to risk him tutoring out something that could ruin my next turn. At that point, I had sacrificed my Ensnaring Bridge so I could go in for the kill on my next attack phase. Null Brooch tapped, he then casts an entwined Tooth and Nail, getting Hellkite Tyrant and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker..........................

He attacks each of us with a Hellkite Tyrant, gets 20 artifacts easily, then wins the game. It was pretty epic.

General Magic / Re: Kaldheim Spoilers

I'm a bit disappointed with Toski, Bearer of Secrets. A Coastal Piracy or a Bident of Thassa on a stick, even an indestructible one, doesn't excite me. When I heard that Kaldheim had a legendary squirrel, I was really hoping the creature would be in Gruul colours.

I agree: he'll either head a mono-green variation of Edric or serve as redundancy in an Edric deck (probably a sub-optimal Edric on top of it). I don't even play Coastal Piracy or Bident of Thassa in my Edric deck anymore. I feel the deck is fast enough and has enough counterspells to protect my commander so I ended up cutting those cards.

Edric's draw trigger is a political tool as well so a Toski variant will lose some depth at the kitchen table.

I don't see how Toski is going to be great in cEDH, but again, I don't play competitive so I'm perhaps not seeing something. Someone that plays cEDH could shed some light.

I recently dusted off my old PS2 and started playing Champions of Norrath.

I would try Commune with the Gods to dig deeper for combo pieces instead of adding a third colour.

I personally love that they chose that specific artwork for a Swords to Plowshares reprint.

The price should go down unless there's some sort of Jumpstart-esque distribution nonsense. That would be horrible.

I can almost see it. Stores get allocations "because of the pandemic" and it takes a while for the supply to get out there. 1 supplemental product is released. 2 more Secret Lairs are announced, with a shipping backlog going back 4 Secret Lairs. The next Standard-legal expansion comes out as Commander Legends supply finally stabilises and everyone forgot about it. Sales first, distribution/shipping logistics can wait.

It's insane. Zendikar Rising has been out for what, a month, and now all we talk about is Commander Legends. This is really silly.

Gift of Doom is indeed a great, under-appreciated card. I currently have it in my Grismold, the Dreadsower deck and I am never disappointed when I draw it.

This card is a trap. I think it's going to be a cEDH staple in most top decks, but honestly, this is average at best in most casual/regular deck. Make no mistake, this card was created to sell Commander Legends.

You have it in your opening hand and cast your commander real fast, you become enemy number one at the average table. Your commander then gets removed early and you have to wait a while until you can recast it. Way to durdle.

Jeweled Lotus is garbage in Glissa the Traitor. She needs to be out so you can recur it, and she needs to be dead for you to use it. Seems a bit silly.

Personally, I will put one in my Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion deck as it is my main 1v1 pandemic Commander deck. The sooner Neheb hits the table, the sooner he can attack and end the game. Jeweled Lotus in this deck seems like a no-brainer. For similar reasons, I will probably put one in my Talrand, Sky Summoner deck. The sooner he is out, the sooner I start amassing an army of drakes. I don't think it's impactful enough in my other decks and it easily gets outclassed by Sol Ring or Mana Crypt.

If I were inclined to put my old Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain deck back together, it would go in there as well. Power out Jhoira early or draw later; Jeweled Lotus is not a wasted card either way.

Everyone forgot about Opposition Agent already.

General Magic / Re: White's Current State in MTG
« on: October 26, 2020, 09:01:56 pm »
I don't think white is that weak across the board (i.e. equally weak in all formats).

I have a mono-white Legacy Rebels deck and it is super fun to play. Rarely do I feel behind my opponent and it is super versatile and resilient. Hell, thanks to Tithe, I never even miss a land drop; I always manage to have enough mana to tutor for a specific rebel or rebel card when I need to. Swords to Plowshares is hard to beat for removal. Knight of the Holy Nimbus and Day of Judgment usually makes my opponent's life difficult, acting as a quasi-tax effect and complicating combat math at times.

White in Commander is surely a support colour more than anything, but I wouldn't say it's bad. WotC has been adding elements to white we haven't seen before so they are on a good path to perhaps balancing the colour out for Commander. Heh, maybe Truce and Temporary Truce will see Commander play despite being symmetrical draw spells.

All that being said, other colours clearly have it much easier. I'm looking at you Simic.

General Magic / Re: White-bordered cards painted black.

A white-bordered card coloured black is damaged/altered. Go to a store and try to sell that card and they will probably tell you that it's worthless. This really isn't a huge debate.

A ''harsh'' review after receiving a product different than the one listed, which you paid their asking price for, is warranted, especially if the seller/site wants to brush off a valid complaint as irrelevant, or make a refund/exchange more difficult than it needs to be.

Poisonous has nothing to do with -1/-1 counters.

Infect is a bit much, but Poisonous (see Virulent Sliver), on the other hand, is more fair.

Zendikar Rising just came out and Commander Legends spoiler season has yet to begin and apparently there is some leaked info about Kaldheim floating around somewhere. This is completely ridiculous. Jumpstart ain't even that old and no one talks about it anymore.
