Commander Discussion / Re: Commander Varient
« on: April 25, 2021, 10:25:21 pm »
Has anyone ever built an edh deck without rares or mythics? I've thought of building a few, but I just can't pick the right commander. Dina, Soul Steeper sounds fun, but her abilities don't synchronize. Does anyone else have ideas for fun edh decks that don't have rares or mythics?

I'm building one right now. With some friends I play with on Spelltable we now have a challenge to build a deck with an uncommon commander and no rares or mythics in the deck.

I am now collecting my cards, I am going to build Hamza, Guardian of Arashin, with some counter cards and some high CMC cards like pathrazer of ulamog, archetype of endurance and such. And there are quite a.lot of carddraw options in uncommon as well: Garruk's uprising, armorcraft judge and inspiring call are some of them.

My friends are going to build Hallar, the firefletcher, abomination of Llanowar and a partner deck with Ghost of Ramirez dePietro & Tormod the desecrator. Another deck one i was thinking of was Araumi of the dead tide. If you look at the budget versions of the deck on EDHREC there are already a lot of (un)commons on the list.

When I have deck in concept I will post it here.

It's finished, tomorrow I'll put it to the test.

One of my friends I play with also posts his decks on Deckstats sometimes, when (/if) that deck is online, I'll post a link in this thread too. I have played against it with a regular (not that powerfull) deck, but I lost. It's blueBlack and quite good. Only building with (un)commons is a good way to keep it budget.

There are apps to use your phone as webcam, i use Iriun, so that's one more app you could try.

If you play commander (and I think you ould use itfor other formats as well), you can use Spelltable.com. It has an build-in option to use your smartphone as a camera and it has a card database alsobuild in. Even if the 'point and search' option doesn't work you stillcan search for thecards your opponents played, so youcan read them better than on screen on thebattlefield.

Commander Discussion / Re: Who's the Best Omnath?
« on: February 11, 2021, 01:44:05 pm »
I agree with WizardSpartan that four-color Omnath is the most powerful, not in the least because all his previous iterations can be played in the 99. And the removal, and manaproduction do help as well.... But I think all versions can be played with succes and enjoyment, as long as you make use of the specific strenghts and make up or compensate for it's weaknesses.

Because I allready started building on my three-color Omnath deck when four-color Omnath was released (and also because of it's pricetag) I am sticking with that Omnath. It started as an elemental tribal deck and is now a voltron superfriends deck. I'm probably losing most of the planeswalkers exept for the ones that do something with elementals or make elemental tokens (I still have to get all Chandra's except for Chandra, novice pyromancer) and go more on Voltron and elemental tokens (with Valduk, keeper of the flame and Tilonalli's Summoner). It's probably not the most optimized version of three-color Omnath, but I want to try something different. I have almost killed a player with commanderdamage, so it's not completely ridiculous ;). If you have (budget) suggestions I would be very gratefull.

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Anowon - Upgrading the PreCon - Help
« on: February 06, 2021, 04:51:18 pm »
I already have upgraded my precon with the rogue's I already had and some that did come in Zendikar Rising and weren't in the precon. Maybe you can get some ideas out of it.

https://deckstats.net/decks/104951/1914672-anowon-rogues/en

I think it is important to add some unblockable rogues in your deck. I don't know if I have enough of them to get Anawon drawing cards. There was also a lot of graveyard stuff going on, you could lean into that, but you have to go anonther way.

Maybe this article will be helpfull to you as well: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/3399999#paper

I wouls like to see a true archer commander. If Greatbow doyen would be simic or bant it would already be great. Blue is important to give your opponent's creatures flying. I did have a casuel 60 card deck that was a lot of fun to play.

I think Spirits need an Esper those are their 3 main colors but they don't have a commander for them yet.  There is also no commanders that focus on soldier synergies.  Same with druids but I think there needs to be a druid set first to give more synergistic cards within the druid tribe.

Don't you think Darien, King of Kjeldor is a typical soldier commander? It sure can make lots of soldiers if your opponents aren't careful.

Commander Discussion / Re: Fix mono white in EDH
« on: January 19, 2021, 08:24:27 am »
Nice thread. I've had a good laugh too with Janklord's design, that card is probably going to be a real card in Commander Legends 2 ;).

For me it's sure that white needs some help. In one of the most recent episodes on the EDHREC they talked about the amount of decks of each monocolor have on EDHREC. White was behind with just around 10,000 decks while the other colors each had over 16,000 decks. That does say something of the power level and interest in monowhite decks.

New cards like Keeper of the accord or Cartographer's Hawk, do help when your behind, but don't get you ahead. Mangara, the diplomat also is nice card that helps get white some cards. Cards like that are a way to help white getting closer to be a viable color in Commander anyway. But the amount of good cards white gets is lacking behind compared to the many good cards other colors are getting in all recent products and sets.

That said, I like monowhite nonetheless. But you have to have a commander that specifically uses one of white strong abilities like equipment and aura's withSram, senior edificer. Heliod, sun crowned (lifegain) and Teshar, ancestor's apostle (recursion) are also commanders that can make use of white's strengths. But there are to little of those commanders in monowhite. As someone on one of the podcasts I listen to mentioned, Wizards does design good white cards like crested sunmare, but they forget to make them legendary (they did mention other cards, but i forget which they were).

For the coming years I hope they get it right. Abilities like those of Sun Titan seem abilities that can expanded on to give white an advantage that the other colors lack to make white more interesting. Token generation seems white to, white weenies is a viable strategy in 60 card formats, but white does not have something that comes close to (the power level) of Krenko, mob boss. But I hope those card will not be designed just to get on par with the other players, It would be nice for white to get ahead sometimes too.

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Kwende - Knight Tribal (budget)
« on: January 04, 2021, 01:49:32 pm »
Nice deck. Looks like fun to play.

You've got quite a few anthems. I would like to recommend some creatures and one aura, so maybe you can cut a few of them. And besides the first strike is Baneslayer Angel an off-theme creature, so that could be a cut as well. Cloud Crusader is expensive in mana for a 2/3 flier, so that is a possible cut too. But I know you have to have some protection against flying. My suggestion has something to do with that as well.

Anyway:
I would like to suggest Knight-captain of Eos, Lena, selfless champion and gift of immortality. If you enchant Lena with the Gift you can sacrifice her again and again to generate soldiers. Those soldiers can then be sacrificed to the Knight-captain to prevent (flying) combat damage so you can be more agressive in your attacks.

And emeria, the sky ruin can help you get some of your creatures back from the graveyard and Oketra's monument can help cast your creatures and give you some blockers doing that. And if you start generating tokens Anointed Procession could be nice as well (but it's a bit expensive nowadays and you don't have other token makers besides Bygone Bishop and Gideon, ally of zendikar).

I could buy the all the rare commanders for under one Euro a piece on cardmarket. So I made my cube not all (un)commons anymore. Probably there are too much creatures in it, but that's up to the deckbuilders to do something about ;). At least there are a lot of chances to get a two or three color commander.

Good luck with it though dude. Sounds like a super fun idea. I hope it works out for you.

https://deckstats.net/decks/104951/1810520-uncommonder-legends

It should be like this. I bought a box of Commander Legends, so I'll have allmost all of the commons. I think I will buy a set for the uncommons, I can get them for about € 25,- including shipping on cardmarket. That would be the easyist way.

So if any of you have any recommendations on how to play, draft or change the landbase, please let me know.

Deck Comments / Re: Uncommonder Legends - Comments

As mentioned in another topic about prismatic piper I have started to think about making a cube on a budget from commander legends by throwing all commons and uncommons together and add lands and signets to get everyone a functional manabase.

To make three-color decks possible I'll add the rule that all multicolor legandary creatures have partner with a monocolor commander that actually has partner in the rulestext. This cube is meant to be drafted with a maximum of 4 persons in 'packs' of 20 cards. So I have 60 cards that are not in the draft.

Do you have sugestions as how to play, additional rules or other tips I'd like to hear them.

Commander Discussion / Re: OK, I've had an idea for Prismatic Piper

There will be quite a few monocolor legendary creatures in Commander Legends with partner, there are 12 in the current revealed cards: https://scryfall.com/search?as=grid&order=name&q=type%3Alegendary+set%3Acmr+rarity%3Au. I think there will 4 or five in each color eventually. If you can combine these with prismatic puper you will have quite few option available to you.

I have been thinking about making an easy cube since this topic. I think I will make an 'uncommonder cube'. A small cube for drafting with a maximum of 4 people with all the commons and uncommons of Commander Legends. That should be 120 + 141 cards = 261 cards with 44 legendary creatures (see: https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Acmr+r%3Au+t%3Alegendary&as=grid&order=set&dir=asc) that can be combined in different ways too.

When I add a few extra mana sources (a few evolving wilds, commandtowers, arcane signets and one or two cycles of tapped dual lands) to get to 300 cards and a 'house rule' that all multicolor uncommon commanders have partner with a card with partner to make three color decks possible. I think that lead to fun games.

Do you think this could work? It would be quite budget to make a cube like this and I think it would be fairly balanced.
