Ooh lucky! My boyfriend plays sealed events and then lets me keep the cards he gets so I got Spell Queller and Assembled Alphas. I did get Midnight Scavengers and Graf Rats so Chittering Host is a thing. Let me know how awesome the Brisela meld gets in an actual game!

Will do! I just need Bruna, The Fading Light. I am going to make a white/blue/green deck with them both, and Tamiyo, field researcher. I am excited to try it in Standard.

I saw someone at the pre-release that used chittering host, and that looked awesome. With Spell Queller, you could make a kickass spirit control deck. Just get something like Essence Flux, and bounce it to counter spells.

That's what I was thinking with Spell Queller. I really think something with rattlechains, Mausoleum wanderer, selfless spirit, essence flux, and eerie interlude could be awesome. Maybe some reflector mage for added bounciness.

Sheoldred, Whispering One every time! She's just awesome and one of the first cards I ever got.

For some reason I just love Topplegeist. He may just be a ditter fella but the card artwork is my all time favorite and he's just a cute little booper.

This is a super interesting set, and I'm excited to start drafting it!

It really is! I thought I wasn't going to like the Eldrazi cosmic/horror thing, but it's actually turned out to be a really cool story line and they tied everything in well. The Eldrazi horror cards are very unique, it's definately something I never thought of seeing. This Friday will be interesting at FNM just to see what people are already doing with their new cards and deck ideas.

Things went pretty well this weekend and I did use the "escalate" ability properly thanks to you guys! At sealed I threw together a B/W lifelink deck and it worked out pretty well and had lots of potential. I may go that route with my first constructed deck with the new cards. I also got a copy of Liliana which was awesome.

Anyone else have any new deck ideas now that there has been opportunity to play with the new set? Or did anyone pull anything cool in a pack?

Can someone explain the "escalate" mechanism to me? I was going over the card list and I'm a little confused on how it functions. The basic mana cost gives you the card's first ability and any additional abilities must be paid with the escalate cost?

to get the most out of the drain package you should also be running 4 pious evangel, gaining life for creatures entering and flipping him to create a 2/4 zulaport is awesome, have 8 drain effect creatures can be huge

idk about unruly mob or gavony unhallowed, i tried to run rot shambler in my abzan aristocrats and it was good, but not an all star, can probably find other creatures with more value

i would also try and get rid of 1 ofs, i find it takes away from the consistency of the deck, planeswalkers you should run a minimum of 2 imo

I like the idea of pious evangel but I will probably keep everything else in the deck until I at least get a chance to playtest at my shop. I don't really play planeswalkers usually, so I'm not sure that I even want to play Sorin in my deck. I typically prefer not to spend the money on them, but I happened to get a copy of Sorin so I decided to toss him in there. If I draw him great, if I don't, that's fine.

Thanks for the suggestions!

i would highly recommend shambling vents for a land replacment since you can animate when flooded and still do damage and gain life

i would also look into dranas emissiery, i think thats the upkeep drain 1

I do have some copies of shambling vent and and drana's emissary! Thank you, both of those are good suggestions.

*Disclaimer* Someone tell me if this is not allowed, I swear I'm not trying to advertise for this site.

I just wanted to share that I've found some great Magic stuff on Massdrop recently in case others are interested! I got the Art History tokens set (Eeeeek, so perfect for me!) and there are lots of other things on there as well. They change out their merch pretty frequently so check back often for cool stuff. I have purchased other games like Boss Monster there and have been happy with their prices and shipping.

Deck Reviews / Self Sacrifice B/W (Standard)
« on: July 14, 2016, 07:36:27 pm »

Current idea for standard B/W deck. Inspired by Scott-Vargas' pro-tour G/B Aristocrats deck and Blood Artist decks. Should also play fairly inexpensively.

Let me know what you think. I'm actually really liking this deck and considering building it after the new set release. I've been wanting to try something like it for awhile but B/W just didn't have quite the push it needed. Selfless Spirit really kicks it up a notch as well as some of the other new cards and I think there are a multitude of combos you can pull off here.

Oh I'm all abuzz with ideas right now! I think a mono white spirit/clerics deck would be cool thematically but not a good choice for competitive play.

R/W human aggro is something I could see becoming a thing, but probably not better than the G/W humans that are popular right now.

I love the idea of U/W spirits and I think I would capitalize on these cards working together: Mausoleum Wanderer, Nebelgast Herald, Drogskol Cavalry, and Rattlechains.

I have been really really wanting to find a way to build a W/B creatures deck that exploits Unruly Mob and Gavony Unhallowed, and Westvale Abbey but I haven't had time to play around with it.

I will probably tweak my B/R vampire aggro and see how well it does with the new cards in it. I'm definately interested in Stensia Banquet, Stromkirk Occultist, Stromkirk Condemned, Insatiable Gorgers, and Furyblade Vampire.

B/U zombies or zombie horror would be awesome, especially a tribal zombie horror Thing In The Ice deck. I'm really liking the value you get out of Cemetery Recruitment much better than Macabre Waltz because you get that draw without the discard. Noosegraf Mob is going to be an awesome compliment to Thing In the Ice. Ruthless disposal also seems like a great card for contending with the Eldrazi Titans.

What are you all thinking for standard decks using the new Eldritch Moon cards? I would love to nerd out and collaborate with you guys on what types of decks, which individual cards, and what play styles you think will become effective in the upcoming months.

I personally think some tribal decks could become viable in this set and be really neat. B/W seems like it could be really awesome as well.

I am so excited for the new set but also so overwhelmed with everything (in life and in Magic) right now that I have no clue where to even start as far as deck building.

I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas!  :)

OMG. School and work have been eating me alive lately so I took a brief hiatus and came back to this. Too much excitement now for the pre-release!

Welcome back Skeri! :)

Will you be attending any prerelease events this weekend?

If I'm a good girl and I get all my crap done I will be attending on both Friday and Sunday! I REALLY don't want to miss it.
