I think a lot of people have undue
hatred for cEDH as a format. Yes, I get it, it sucks when you're playing moonfolk tribal and someone shows up at your table with
Edgar Markov and stomps everyone, but that doesn't mean that cEDH as a format is the problem. In fact, cEDH as a format may be the solution.
Think about this, there are a set number of people at your local game store who want to play commander. Some of those want to play their OP Atraxa kill deck and some people just want to play
Niv-Mizzet Parun dragonstorm. However, with these people there will be those who have multiple decks, some competitive and some non-competitive. If you have tables where anyone can sit down and play with any deck, then, depending on the mix of cEDH players, it's likely someone with a Tier 1 deck gets put with multiple Tier 3-4. But, if you have tables devoted to cEDH and tables with restrictions stopping those Tier 1 decks coming in, then people with those Tier 3-4 decks will likely not be put with those high tier decks as they are focused around the cEDH tables. In home games, it makes organising games with people much easier as the cEDH players have a label for exactly how they want to play.
The rules committee deciding not to recognize cEDH as an entity is a huge mistake, as it just means those who want cEDH as a regulated, organised format are left finding Commander play groups that they may have a good time with, or who they may stomp with their deck and leave the group because, sometimes, stomping people with your deck over and over can feel just as bad as getting stomped over and over. Then they have to get new cards to downgrade their deck with because the playgroup is not on their level.
And recognizing cEDH doesn't take away from casual commander, not in the slightest. Yes, public tournaments for commander may make people think it's more competitive, but this is the age of the internet. Commander VS, Commander Clash, Game Knights are all about Commander as a casual format, and many people watch those. You can never kill Commander's legacy as a casual format, so why not give some place for people to play it competitively?
Sorry for long post, but that's my two cents =)
