Commander Banned List Update, 8 July 2019

ADMIN
Philosophy Document Update

CARDS
Paradox Engine is banned
Iona, Shield of Emeria is banned
Painter’s Servant is unbanned

RULES
No changes.

The Philosophy Document update coalesces the important elements of how we think about the format into a concise and easily-digestible set of ideals, answering the question “what is Commander?” We haven’t changed the underlying philosophy of Commander: it’s specifically intended to be something other than a tournament format in which players consider each other’s experiences alongside their own. You’ll notice that we’ve eliminated categories for banning cards. We’d found that many folks misinterpreted them as hard criteria for banning as opposed the guidelines we always considered them. There might be some common threads among banned cards, but the primary reason cards get put on the list is that they challenge the positive experience we want to promote.

Paradox Engine is a card that has proven to be intensely problematic. Not only does it provide easy wins seemingly out of nowhere, it has demonstrated the potential to unintentionally wreck games. Easily inserted into any deck, it combines with cards which players already have heavy incentives to play, generating a great deal of mana with virtually no deck building cost. While we don’t ban cards which are only problematic if you build around them, Paradox Engine has clearly demonstrated that it doesn’t need to be built around to be broken.

Iona, Shield of Emeria creates a negative experience for many players without the benefit of a positive application. We had previously considered its high mana cost sufficient to keep it from getting played, but deeper investigation demonstrated many ways of getting it onto the battlefield without paying that cost. Iona, Shield of Emeria is also an exemplar as the type of card which creates an experience we wish to discourage, namely shutting players out of games.

Painter’s Servant is a card that’s been discussed for a long time and it’s time to take off the shackles. We feel as though there are now more weird and fun uses for the card than there are dangerous ones. The card will provide deck builders with some additional paths to explore in expressing their creativity.

Many thanks to the Commander Advisory Group for the input and insights into putting together this update. Their presence continues to add great value to the format.

I got a Revel in Riches win with this deck over the weekend... my buddy was playing his Krenko, Mob Boss goblin deck and had 40 tokens on the field... Massacre Girl did her thing, got me 40+ treasures, and nobody had the enchantment removal before my next upkeep XD

I always hoped I'd get to do that sometime. Now I feel justified in having it in the deck.

Flames of the Raze-Boar -> Lava Coil: I thought Flames of the Raze-Boar would be better in this deck, but even with pumps there's just not enough creatures over 4 power to really make the card valuable. Lava Coil is easier to play, deals 4 damage to a creature, and can exile. It's much more flexible.

Revision 3

Added/removed cards:
-1 Flames of the Raze-Boar
+1 Lava Coil

Accursed Witch -> Graveshifter: Having another Gravedigger fits this strategy much better than the curse that Accursed Witch leaves behind.

Bloodhusk Ritualist -> Warteye Witch: Bloodhusk Ritualist is a good mana sink for the late game (especially when Cabal Coffers and Black Market go off), but the Scry ability of Warteye Witch consistently pays off more than the Bloodhusk Ritualist.

Revision 4

Added/removed cards:
-1 Accursed Witch
-1 Bloodhusk Ritualist
+1 Graveshifter
+1 Warteye Witch

This deck is more effective than I thought it was going to be.

Cut 1 Swamp and added Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to further boost the effectiveness of Cabal Coffers.

Revision 3

Added/removed cards:
+1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth

Changed amounts:
-1 Swamp

Baird, Steward of Argive -> Odric, Lunarch Marshal: Odric's ability is far superior in this deck's strategy to Baird's.

Revision 7

Added/removed cards:
-1 Baird, Steward of Argive
+1 Odric, Lunarch Marshal

Ring of Thune -> Sword of the Animist: getting +1/+1 counters is nice and all, but the blinks and flickers kind of regular reset your creatures. Sword of the Animist is great mana fixing while still providing a small buff.

Kor Outfitter -> Brass Squire: the Squire is reusable. Enough said.

Traxos -> Dispatch: Traxos just was not pulling its weight. I thought it'd be better in this deck but really, Danitha does most of the heavy lifting. Cut that creature out and replaced with another good removal spell.

Revision 6

Added/removed cards:
-1 Kor Outfitter
-1 Ring of Thune
-1 Traxos, Scourge of Kroog
+1 Brass Squire
+1 Dispatch
+1 Sword of the Animist

@Judaspriester - thanks for the tips! I always appreciate another set of eyes on my strategy.

Kor Outfitter will definitely swap for Brass Squire, that's a no-brainer.

Mana was definitely an issue at first. I beat my friend's Esper control/artifacts deck with 5 Plains and a Sol Ring, while he had probably 10 lands of all colors, Chromatic Lantern, Sol Ring, and Thran Dynamo/Voltaic Key combo for all the mana fixing he could want. It was a tough game but in the end I won, and I realized I needed to add some fixing. Adding Explorer's Scope was a HUGE boon - since I'm pretty much always attacking in with Danitha, it's very good for ramp and clearing floods. Gift of Estates would have been a KILLER card for the situation I was in. That one may have to go in as well.

I think I'll cut Darksteel Axe and replace it with Sword of the Animist, get two birds stoned at once. Lyra stays in for now because honestly I've won every game I've played with this deck so far without ever getting to the Angels. Definitely need more time behind the wheel before I decide to cut her - she's also just one of my favorite cards ever so that part of me just wants to have her in the deck, haha.

Last note - I considered Conjurer's Closet, but ultimately decided against it since the action happens at a predescribed time. It would be great to get rid of a Luminous Bonds, Demotion, or something of the like, but it didn't fit my strategy here; the blinks and flickers in this deck are generally all reactionary, so Conjurer's Closet didn't make the cut. Something like Voyager Staff would be more at home here.

Thanks for your input! Much appreciated!

After some play testing, I found that the Auras, while good, didn't sync well and ended up dead in hand most of the time. Cut the high-cost Celestial Mantle for an easy-to-play Explorer's Scope that will allow you to ramp your mana or, at worst, check your next draw. Also cut Angelic Destiny; its recursion was powerful, but there's enough blink effects in the deck that more often than not, it never returned to my hand. Swapped for a Darksteel Axe to help buff the commander - it's easy to cast and the fact that it doesn't add toughness isn't too big a drawback for a creature with first strike.

Revision 5

Added/removed cards:
-1 Angelic Destiny
-1 Celestial Mantle
+1 Darksteel Axe
+1 Explorer's Scope

I love Elenda, the Dusk Rose and she for sure goes into every Vampire deck I have that contains WB (I have at least 3), but she's just not a great commander unless your deck is built around graveyard recursion. You cast her for 4 as a 1/1, she dies to Shock for 1, then if you want to cast her again, she costs 6 for a 1/1 and could still die to a basic spell or a token. She's great to have in the deck but as a commander, the diminishing returns are too real. Your deck has enough lifelink that Vona, Butcher of Magan could make an effective commander, and Elenda's lifelink token generation plays well into Vona's ability to pay 7 life to destroy nonland permanents.

Good hunting!

Yes, except Primal Vigor also affects your opponents' boards... hope none of your opponents are playing Krenko, Mob Boss!

General Magic / Re: EDH Deck building 101 Question.
« on: June 07, 2019, 02:45:04 am »
I just got into EDH about a year ago and I definitely love it - requires a very different approach to deckbuilding. The mana base is obviously super important, and I wouldn't recommend going as low as 32, unless you're running a lot of mana rocks. I would play 35 in a mono-colored EDH deck and feel okay about it. Most of my EDH decks use around 37 lands + mana rocks and I rarely get screwed or flooded. Sol Ring is pretty much mandatory in any EDH deck, and if you're running a multicolored deck, guild Signets (ie Azorius Signet, Rakdos Signet) are very effective mana rocks as well.

You definitely need to run card draw, because even in draw-heavy EDH decks, I've never drawn more than 50-60 cards in one game. Cantrips are your friend, since they have effects/leave a creature on the board AND draw. You're not going to touch a lot of your deck so it's good to have multiple cards that can have the same effects (ie Parallel Lives and Anointed Procession in a token-heavy GW deck). Cards that give options are also extremely valuable - Dromoka's Command is necessary for me in any GW deck, just as Merciless Eviction is for me in any BW deck. Hero's Downfall replaces Murder any day of the week. Since you won't be drawing a lot of your deck, having one card that can get you out of multiple jams is REALLY good.

Sorry if this is info you already know! Good hunting!

You could also consider Parallel Lives as a green variation of Anointed Procession, and a Doubling Season never hurt a token deck...
