If you want to populate Rootborn Defenses and Wake the reflections are definitely the best cards to get you there. Realistically if you want to win with the populate mechanic you need to add white which will be more expensive in the mana base. Populate also hinges on having both visionary and counterpart so you'd want a combo shell (I guess just counterspells and card draw in simic colors, white would give more removal).

I'd suggest a slightly different direction. Artisan of Forms, Renegade Doppelganger and Phantasmal Image are all slam dunks at 2 CMC (not looking at $$ cost). Artisan is awkward if you aren't running spells that trigger heroic, but I think those are generally a good idea. Cryptoplasm and Cytoshape are good at 3 CMC. Maybe 1 or 2 Infinite Reflection or Mirrorweave would be interesting. You could copy your opponent's creatures with the 2 and 3 drops I listed and then slam either of these cards and just win. I realize it's a high CMC but it's a consideration. Mirage Mirror is good because it dodges a lot of creature removal.

 I agree that you want ways to protect your creatures. Mizzium Skin and Blossoming Defense are decent especially with Artisan of Forms. Counterspells are good.

I've updated my list to it's current version. I'd really like to have Hurkyl's Recall, Vendilion Clique, Keranos, God of Storms, Relic of Progenitus and possibly Izzet Staticaster and Electrolyze in the sideboard. Mana was awkward before I updated it, but Blood Moon is good enough that you could run this with Blood Moon and more basic lands.

Yeah, if I wasn't trying for a budget build Ancestral Vision would be main deck :-P I'd probably also main deck 2 Blood Moon.

Browbeat, lol. I'll add to the sideboard for now, but that's mean. I'll definitely main deck Browbeat when I get around to buying and testing this deck myself. Thanks again for the suggestions!

Are you testing on MTGO or are you goldfishing? If you're testing against other players I'd like to know how it matches up against combo. I feel like this deck would match up poorly to combo since we let them sculpt their hands and dig them to their win condition a lot faster. Basically, I'm wondering if the real sideboard would be some graveyard hate and a bunch of Counterspells with maybe a more sweepers for aggro.
