Commander Discussion / Quandrix C21 Defect
« on: April 08, 2021, 05:21:05 pm »
Sooo.... the new Quandrix Commander doubles tokens but the deck likes creating 0/0 fractals... wouldn’t the commander be useless then? Unless there’s some way to give them a buff. It just feels bad... or am I wrong?

My Inalla, Archmage Ritualist deck is a deck I don't see myself taking apart ever. It's pretty competitive, consistent, and fun. I also modify it with each set release keeping it fresh e.g. just added Bolas's Citadel, Watcher for Tomorrow, and Tribute Mage.

I also plan on keeping my Zedruu the Greathearted deck, which is more casual. It plays a slower game and I switch between those two decks.

Commander Discussion / Re: What's your "Pet Deck" in EDH?

My Inalla, Archmage Ritualist deck. I've been collecting a lot to make it pretty competitive and thus far, it has my collection of dual lands. I just love how far it has come :') and I like Wizard tribal. I can actually play it over and over again because the ETBs of each Wizard is different enough that it plays differently a lot of the time.

General Magic / Re: Games you've enjoyed

Played my coin flip deck. Played Combat Celebrant, gave him haste with Hanweir Battlements. Both Okaun, Eye of Chaos and Zndrsplt, Eye of Wisdom was out, and a Klark's Thumb. Equipped Whisper Silk Cloak and then went to combat. Flipped for Zndrsplt first, got 5 coin flips right. Went to flip for Okaun, got 3 coin flips right. I drew 8 cards total and Okaun is at 768 power, unblockable shroud. Attacked my friend to my right with Combat Celebrant and Okaun. I exerted the Celebrant, got my extra Combat Phase. Went to combat, and flipped for Zndrsplt, got 4 flips in a row. Flipped for Okaun and got 4 flips as well. Drew another 8 cards and attacked the last player for 196,608 commander damage, ftw. Very swingy and hilarious.

Other times, I'm satisfied when my deck does its thing, I'm fine with losing. Yet, there are games where an opponent is boasting and I come out of nowhere:
I'm playing my group hug deck, Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis, and had a decent set-up - Ghostly Prison and Norn's Annex with Howling Mine and some other stuff out. Guy to my left played Avenger of Zendikar before, and now played March of the Multitudes at my end step, convoking like crazy. He also had a Doubling Season by the way and so things aren't looking so good. He threatens everyone at the table. He decides not to attack and wait. Now everyone is throwing down as much creatures as they can, but the guy is still like, "next turn I win." No one had a board wipe and now it's my turn. He looks at me and says, "if you can't do anything, I'm going to take you out first." I mean I really didn't have too much creatures. But I did have Insurrection. I stole the game. It was fun.

Mtg Goldfish lists the expected value of a box and pack. A pack comes out to about $2.90 and a box is about $105. They explain their methodology which is pretty logical.

With a lot of players, maybe group hug so you don't lose friends. I like to play asymmetrical group hug so I don't stand out as a target until the end. Maybe Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis? Use Propoganda, Norn's Annex, and Ghostly Prison while building up your resources, and let your opponents duke it out. Use Howling Mine, and Tempting Offer cards to make friends.

Also, Selvala, Explorer Returned or Edric, Spymaster of Trest are good commanders for group hug.

The cards you're talking about, like Repulse and Electrolyze are good cards for casual commander.

Maybe use blue extra turn cards like Time Warp and cantrips that draw, like Opt. I understand that extra turns may not be "fun", so some other interesting spells are Twincast, Reverberate, Stitch in Time (coin flip extra turns), Sleep, Snap (that will let you untap four lands), Bribery, Acquire, and maybe Quasiduplicate. Just some ideas.

General Magic / Re: Oathbreaker Format
« on: April 19, 2019, 12:50:53 am »
A few players from my commander play group want to do an Oathbreaker game. What I find appealing is the signature spell and planeswalker pair since it makes the game more flavorful. We haven't played a game yet, but I already have some ideas. It's different from commander because you choose a planeswalker instead of a legendary creature and of course you get a signature spell. You can use any card, not just from Standard. I think because of these, the format is different enough from Brawl and Commander, but that's just me.

I'm thinking of doing Jace, Cunning Castaway as my commander with some kind of proliferate spell. I also am thinking of Ral Zarek with Twincast for an artifact spellslinger deck. With Ral's ability you can untap Izzet Boilerworks or Thran Dynamo. Lastly, Domri, Chaos Bringer would be a sweet Aggro deck.

Commander Discussion / Re: EDH players- what's your best deck?
« on: March 30, 2019, 12:14:16 am »
Inalla, Archmage Ritualist. One of my first EDH decks I bought and modified. It pushes ETBs by copying wizards and has a pretty good win rate. It runs Sower of Temptation, Beguiler of Wills, Master of Waves, and then copies with Minion Reflector, Flameshadow Conjuring, Panharmonicon, Naban, Dean of Iteration, and Mirror March.

Deck Reviews / Re: [EDH / Commander] Mizzix upgrade help needed.

Tezzeret's Gambit could help, it helps proliferate experience counters even when your commander is not out (assuming you already have one), plus a decent draw spell.

I believe by surprise I win, you just mean a win con. I'll admit I've never heard it labeled as surprise I win before.

Win cons will vary, and should be based on your commander. But it's good to have something secret in case things stop working out, like a back-up plan. The rest of your deck should push your strategy. But the rest are really strong includes; at least the fixing definitely. I'd be surprised if you are running blue and don't include Rhystic Study, or running a deck with no Signets.

Also, not saying my way is unarguably the right way. This is just a guideline I found that helps.

And Blightsteel Colossus and Eldrazi are definitley good back ups too

Auto-includes often stem from each color's way to respond to other player's strategy. I often use Budget Commander's list to check my decks.

  • 50 mana; lands and ramp, usually a 37–13 split
  • 10 sources of "card advantage;" I use this term loosely but am mostly looking for card draw or any spell that nets me 2+ non-land cards in hand / directly into play
  • 6 targeted removal, split between creature / artifact / enchantment removal
  • 3 board wipes; creature-light decks might want 1 more, creature-heavy decks might want 1 less
  • 2 (graveyard) recursion
  • 2 flexible tutors
  • 1 graveyard hate
  • 1 surprise "I Win" card; something that can win games the turn you cast it without too much setup

AUTO-INCLUDES:

RAMP/FIXING:

CARD ADVANTAGE:

TARGETED REMOVAL:

BOARD WIPES:

NOTABLE TUTORS:

GRAVEYARD HATE:

SURPRISE I WIN:
