Over the last few years, more and more differences between digital and paper versions of MTG have emerged. While there were always cards that were only available in paper form, there are now also cards and entire sets that are only available in Arena. This could sometimes lead to confusion, as our card database contained a mix of cards across all these different forms.

To help you keep track of which cards are playable where, we are now introducing the concept of game types. Each card can be associated with one or several types of game - paper, Arena or MTGO. You can pick your preferred game type in your settings. Cards in the deckbuilder and our set lists will now automatically be filtered to your preferred game type (but you can always override this).

You can also specify a game type for your collections in the collection properties. This is important when we calculate the percentage that you own of each set, as we will now only consider cards of the same game type. Previously, it may have been impossible to reach 100% completion for some sets, for example when your collection was all paper but the set also contained unique arena cards. The set list will also adapt to the game type of the collection that you have selected.

And if you want things to stay the way they were until now, you can just leave your settings and collection properties at the default value ("any").

I hope that this will prove useful to many of you! As usual, please let me know here or via Twitter or Discord if you have any thoughts about this or notice any problems.

I am excited to announce that we have just released a new version of our card database, which will make it a lot easier to find and import cards!

Until now, we only supported official 'oracle names' for cards. This meant that card names in other languages, such as [[Sonnenring]] or [[疾行靴]], or special card names such as [[Chief Jim Hopper]] would not be recognized. Instead, you had to write [[Sol Ring]] or [[Sophina, Spearsage Deserter]].

With this update, our card database has now been extended to understand all of these names.

Here is how it works:

Non-english card names can now be detected by our autocorrect algorithm and will be converted to the English oracle name. When importing them into a collection, their language will also be set accordingly. To avoid confusion, card names will always be displayed in English when viewing a deck or a collection, even if they were originally written in another language.

Special card names (aka flavor names) will be recognized directly, even when autocorrect is off. They can also be used when searching our card database. If you add a card to your deck or your collection using its special name, it will also be displayed with that name.

As part of this update we have also added autocorrect functionality to our collection import tool. When an unknown card name is detected during an import, you will be given the option to turn on autocorrect and try again.

As usual, please let me know here or via Twitter or Discord if you have any thoughts about this or notice any problems!

About Deckstats / New: Automatically detect tokens in deckbuilder
« on: June 26, 2022, 11:23:50 pm »
Our Deckbuilder can now automatically detect which tokens are needed for your deck. Just scroll down to the Tokens section, click "Detect Tokens" and you will get a list of all the tokens to add. In addition, we can also detect extra tokens in your deck that aren't actually needed and remove them.

Please give it a try and let me know what you think!

Emblems are unfortunately not supported at the moment but it should be able to identify all normal tokens.

Today at 10pm CEST (4pm ET, 1pm PT) our servers will need to go offline for approximately 30min to carry out some high priority maintenance. Apologies in advance for any disruption this may cause!

I am happy to announce two improvements to our collection manager today:

  • We have a new tool, currently in beta, that lets you find duplicate cards in your collection and either merge or deduplicate them. This is available through the new Tools button above the card list.
  • The filters in the collection manager have now moved above the card list and support more advanced color filtering, similar to what you can do when viewing a collection.
As usual, please let me know what you think - post here, message me in #site-feedback on our Discord or Tweet to @deckstats on Twitter.

In particular, please take care when using the deduplicate cards tool and let me know if you notice anything unexpected!

Update: This has now been completed.

Our hosting provider will be carrying out some important software upgrades on Thursday June 2 around 7am GMT (9am CEST, 3am EST, midnight PST). Deckstats may be unavailable for up to two hours while these upgrades are in progress.

Please make sure you save any open decks or collections before this time, and take a backup of anything you might need access to while the site is down.

You can now flag cards in your decks as proxies to show that you do not actually own them, by ticking the corresponding box in the deckbuilder or adding "!Proxy" to their comment.

Proxy cards are ignored when calculating how many cards from your collection are being used in your active decks. This way, you can now set a deck to 'Active' even if you do not have all the cards in your collection and it will not mess up the numbers for other decks.

To avoid confusion, proxies are still included when calculating the total price of a deck. If you would like a card to be omitted from this calculation as well, you can use the ignore_price override.

In addition, we also have a new tickbox in the collection manager that allows you to indicate if a card is signed. This will have no effect on any price calculations, but an icon will be shown next to the card when you view your collection.

I also made some UI improvements - in particular you can now click/tap on card icons in decklists to see what they mean. This information was previously only available as a 'hover text', so there was no way to see it on mobile.

Finally, there are a few small bugfixes - card corners now look nicer when you're viewing a fullscreen card image on mobile and the number of available cards in the card database is now updated correctly when you add cards to your deck.

About Deckstats / UI updates and dark mode - now live!
« on: December 23, 2021, 10:07:03 am »
As announced I am excited to release a new version of the Deckstats design - including a dark mode theme - today!

Here is a quick overview over all the changes in this update:

  • New design: I have kept the familiar color scheme, but modernised the layout and cleaned up a bunch of details. Some buttons have moved around a bit and some pages may look a little different, but the core functionality has not changed and everything should be easy to find.
  • Dark and light themes: you can toggle to dark mode with a switch at the bottom of the page, or let the site adjust automatically based on your OS settings.
  • Improved deck preview images: when posting decks to other sites like reddit or Discord, the preview image will now be high-res art from a card in your deck, replacing the old 'color stripes'. We will try to choose a sensible card automatically (eg. if you're playing commander it will use the art from the commander), but you can also select your favorite from the deck properties. The next time you save your deck, the color stripes on Deckstats will be replaced by card art too.
  • Improved mobile layout in the forums: the design of the forums will still require some further work, but they should be a bit more usable on small screens now. I am planning to make further improvements to the forums over time.

It has been a long road to make this happen, so I hope you enjoy these changes!

As usual, if you notice any bugs or have further suggestions please post here, message me in #site-feedback on our Discord or Tweet to @deckstats on Twitter.

Thank you to the beta testers on our Discord who helped me test these changes, CleanBelwas who helped me build the initial design prototype, and a special shout out to our Patreon subscribers for their continued support!

And, of course, happy holidays to those who celebrate and a happy new year! 🎄

About Deckstats / Coming soon: UI updates and dark mode!
« on: December 19, 2021, 10:36:56 pm »
If there was a ranking of the most requested Deckstats features, one of them would almost certainly be on top: dark mode.

For various technical reasons it has been a long road to make this happen. However, I am excited to announce that dark mode will finally become available in the next few days!

As part of this work I also made a whole range of additional changes to our design, trying to make everything look a bit more modern and clean. I'm preparing to publish all of these changes by this Wednesday (Dec 22) but I thought I'd already give everyone a quick heads up today.

Here is an overview over what you can expect:

  • A general overhaul of our design - I have kept the light color scheme similar, but modernised the layout and cleaned up a bunch of details. Some buttons will move around a bit and some pages may look a little different, but the core functionality has not changed and everything should be easy to find.
  • Dark and light themes - you will be able to toggle to dark mode with a switch at the bottom of the page, or let the site adjust automatically based on your OS settings.
  • Improved deck preview images on social media - when you share a Commander deck on sites like reddit, Twitter or Discord, the old 'color stripes' will be replaced with the high-res artwork from the commander. For other formats you can select a card to highlight by adding "!Highlight" in its comment field.
  • Improved mobile layout in the forums - making the forums work well on small screens will still require some further work, but they will at least be a bit more usable than they are right now.

About Deckstats / New: Visual Deckbuilder
« on: October 05, 2021, 07:51:20 pm »
I am excited to announce that we finally have a feature that many of you have been requesting for a long time: A visual deckbuilder!

All of the functionality you know and love from our deckbuilder is still there, but you can now switch to a new view where all cards are shown as images.

Common actions (add card to deck, increase amount etc) are available as buttons directly on the card images, and clicking or tapping on the image will open a window with all the usual options. As part of this update I have also made various related UI improvements, such as a new 'Sort' menu on top of each card table and some reliability and speed improvements for the deckbuilder.

Please give it a try and let me know what you think!

Thank you to the folks on our Discord who helped me beta test these changes, and a special shout out to our Patreon subscribers for their continued support! As usual, if you notice any bugs or have further suggestions please post here, message me in #site-feedback on our Discord or Tweet to @deckstats on Twitter.

PS: Dark mode is next up!

About Deckstats / Set data update
« on: September 29, 2021, 08:05:58 pm »
I have just made some changes to our set names and abbreviations/codes to bring them in line with the names and codes used on Scryfall. Most of the changes are very minor (eg. "Magic 2015" instead of "Magic 2015 Core Set") but a few of the set codes have changed as well.

To ease the transition, I have added a function that automatically translates old set codes to new ones. For example, both 10E (new) and 10ED (old) will get you Tenth Edition.

Thanks to this, most old decks and collection lists should be converted automatically. However, there are a small number of set codes that used to stand for different sets in the old version. These are:

  • DVD is now Duel Decks Anthology: Divine vs. Demonic (it was Duel Decks: Divine vs. Demonic, which is now DDC)
  • EVG is now Duel Decks Anthology: Elves vs. Goblins (it was Duel Decks: Elves vs. Goblins, which is now DD1)
  • JVC is now Duel Decks Anthology: Jace vs. Chandra (it was Duel Decks: Elves vs. Goblins, which is now DD2)
  • PBOK is now Betrayers of Kamigawa Promos (it was Miscellaneous Book Promos, which is now PBOOK)

If you are uploading a list that contains cards from those sets, please check that the right set has been selected for them and update them manually if needed.

As usual, please let me know if you notice any problems.

About Deckstats / Planned Downtime Sept 29 (now done) + some small updates
« on: September 25, 2021, 04:50:06 pm »
Next Wednesday we are planning to move Deckstats to a newer, faster server. Since this involves setting up new hardware and moving hundreds of Gigabytes of data it will require a downtime of about 1-2 hours.

The move is scheduled for Wednesday, September 29 from around 8 am GMT (10am CEST, 4am EST, 1am PT). Hopefully this early time will mean minimal disruption for most of you. If you will need access to your decks or your collection around this time, please make sure you download a copy of them now.

Unrelated to this, I have also just made a few small updates to the site:

- You can now upload deck lists in Deckbox CSV format.
- When downloading a deck list, you can choose whether to include printing details such as set and collector number.
- Searching for cards across decks will now also find cards in the sideboard, maybe board or token list.
- You can now set a 'Date added' when importing card lists into your collection.

Things have been a bit quiet lately but today I finally have another update for you! I have just released these new features related to our collection manager:

  • Collection stats: There are now some more statistics about your collection at the bottom of the page. These include the number of unique cards, the number of complete sets and the number of unique sets.
  • Set percentages: Our set overview page now shows the percentage of cards in your collection for each set, or a tick mark if you own at least one copy of each unique card. You can also filter the set list by collection status.
  • Move cards between collections: On the Manage Collection page you can now move entries to other collections. Click the an arrow on the right or select multiple cards and use the Move button at the bottom to move them all. Entries will only be moved once you save your changes.
  • And more: Editing large collections should now be faster, collection counts in sets are more accurate, filtering by color in sets now works properly, and there are some other minor fixes.

Thank you to the people on our Discord who helped me beta test these changes, and a special shout out to our Patreon subscribers for their support! As usual, if you notice any bugs or have further suggestions please post here, message me in #site-feedback on our Discord or Tweet to @deckstats on Twitter.

Good news for collectors: I have just extended our card database to include not only English printings, but cards in all other languages as well!

This means that we now support sets which don't contain any English cards (such as Foreign Black Border) as well as special versions of cards such as the Japanese prints in Strixhaven Mystical Archive. In addition, card images in your collection will now be displayed in the language you have selected (where available). Please note that we do not currently track prices for foreign printings.

Since this is quite a large change you may encounter some unexpected behavior over the next few days. If you notice anything wrong or missing, or if you have any other feedback or questions, please let me know.

About Deckstats / New: Become a Deckstats Patron
« on: March 06, 2021, 07:53:50 pm »
As you know, Deckstats has always been (and will continue to be) completely free to use. To cover basic costs like our servers, we use banner advertisements and I also get paid a small amount if you buy cards through links on here.

From time to time I get asked whether there is a way to support Deckstats beyond this, by donating money directly. Until now this was unfortunately not possible.

However, I am happy to announce that I have now also created a Patreon page for Deckstats! By becoming a Patron, you can support the site through a monthly contribution, which you can pay by credit card or Paypal. You are free to pay any amount you want, although the suggested minimum amount is $5.

To thank you for your support as a Patron, you can become a member of our special Patron user group. This will allow you to disable our banner ads on our main site, and your status as a Patron will also be shown on your profile.

So if you would like to support my work on Deckstats, please have a look at deckstats.net/donate for details! If you'd prefer not to use Patreon, the page also lists a few other ways you can contribute - including some non-monetary options.
