Deck Reviews / Used AI to design Casual Affinity deck
« on: November 28, 2023, 09:02:31 pm »
Hi I wanted to post my deck, I designed it using AI

https://deckstats.net/decks/196702/3305981-casual-affinity-designed-by-ai

It evolved from a selection of cards and I wrote the algorithm as well the code to simulate the MTG rules. Basically the deck is optimal from the point of view of maximizing damage in aggro way and optimizing the mana curve. For now it cannot keep into account interaction with more complex cards like counters, controls etc.

It already is probably the most advanced piece of software on MTG simulation and is already incredibly complex. I think this deck is a very good starting point to select a sideboard.

Interestingly I also have found interesting data on some cards.

But I would like to know from you for which formats it could be worth finding an optimal AI deck. And which cards would be worth to be inserted in the simulation.

This one on average could win potentially at turn 5  for the 99% of games. Of course the simulation do mulligan down to 5 cards if the following conditions are not met
  • 2-3 lands (no more than 2 Sagas)
  • 1 creature and 1 powerhouse

So the average winning turn 5 count only if you mulligan the same way

General Magic / Is springleaf drum really useful in affinity?
« on: December 24, 2021, 11:35:47 am »
I computed the chance of the springleaf drum,

To use Springleaf drum at 1st turn you need a mana to cast the drum (and a 0 cost creature), then use the drum to cast something else (not thoughtcast, because we have only 3 artifacts at this point).

so the combination of cards is (even assuming keeping 12 creatures with cmc 0 is wise)

12 x (0 cmc creatures) at least 1 in hand
4 x (spring leaf drum) at least 1 in hand
18 x (lands) at least 1 in hand
12 x (spell with cmc =1) at least 1 in hand.

in a 60 cards deck, the chance for that  In your First 8 cards Is 25.4%.
Final conclusion? on turn 1 much better just something with cost 1 that you use for something else, or 1 Mox Opal.
Now, advantages of springleaf drum as a 2nd/3rd turn extra mana? (meaning potentially you can cast a cost 3 creature thanks to it at 2nd turn, but that still relies on having 1 creature with cmc 0, requiring polluting the deck with useless creatures, otherwise you should spend mana to cast another creature)

Another alternative for using Springleaf Drum, is to have 4 moxes (regardless you can play only 1), and many cost 1 stuff, meaning on first and second turn you play 4/5 creatures, but then you have a empty hand. But I have yet to verify the chance for this kind of combo (though maybe this one is good, it could allow Cranial Plating attack on 2 turn, but is that more worth than having other kind of cards?)

Having some doubt also on moxopal... this need deep reflections. I think automatically adding it to decks just make the price goes up, without really thinking if it fits or if it is usefull..

Deck Reviews / [Vintage Affinity] Dark Sovereign
« on: December 20, 2021, 07:40:46 pm »
Hi everyone, this is my current affinity deck.
A bit of context, I had a crappy affinity, I wanted to make it pretty good within 30% euros of expense.

So I had to trade a bit of power for cheapness.

There is a 71% chance to get the combination to make it work (53% to get cards  without mulligan, and another 18% with 1 mulligan)

The combination includes
22 creatures
20 mana
11 powerhouses

(which means I need 1 powerhouse, 1 creature and 2 mana to get the combination I need, other usefull combinations are not in this calculation)

Ideally I'd add more powerhouses to increase %, but I was budget limited. There is a chance to get a Card Draw card, so actually the chance is slightly above 71% (which is pretty good for me for a cheap combo deck).

Part of the tradeoffs, were to not change to much cards, because of that, the deck is vintage just because of 2 artifact lands, otherwise it could play in modern (however, I would need to change too much cards in that case).

Let me know what you think about that :)

To make it more powerfull:

Remove duress,
Remove paradise mantle

put in Silverleaf Drum, and Some extra powerhouse, someon would remove also Pithing Needle, Tormod's Crypt and add extra creatures like Vault Skrige or Memnite

Extra cards + old cards are kept in sideboard (that's why I have still red mana lands).

If someone is interested I found a method on my own on how to compute mana curve for affinity decks :)
(anyway it's simple, you have a mana curve for each amount of artifacts up to 7, which means if you have 98% chance to start with 1 artifact you can just consider the second mana curve, and then you get a specific chance to play the third mana curve and so on)

EDIT: It happens  by trying random hand drawings.... that probably this deck without changes is pretty strong O_O ideally I'd need to try it in real games though
