Deck Reviews / [EDH / Commander] Kykar Token Storm
« on: June 25, 2019, 10:28:11 pm »
Kykar Token Storm

The idea of this deck is to use Kykar, and other token producers like Young Pyromancer to create a ton of tokens. These tokens will then be sacrificed to Kykar (especially if there is an Arcane Adaptation out) or to an Altar like Phyrexian Altar. Mana can also be produced from big mana spells like Battle Hymn. With that mana, the deck casts cantrips like Expedite and card draw spells like Stroke of Genius to keep churning through the deck and making more tokens. This has a storm like effect, but because storm is very difficult to pull off in commander the deck aims to assemble an infinite the combo. Here is the list of all of the infinite combos I know of:
The Locust God + Skullclamp + (Ashnod's Altar / Phyrexian Altar) = Draw entire deck
Twilight Drover + Phyrexian Altar + Anointed Procession = Infinite tokens and mana
Reiterate + (Battle Hymn / Mana Geyser) = Infinite mana and Infinite spell copies

Win cons for with or without infinites:

Impact Tremors turns 40 tokens into game.
Expansion//Explosion kills players with enough mana.
Mizzix's Mastery / Past in Flames can give you an overwhelming token board in one turn to win you the game on the next, or to help you go off.

All in all, this deck is in a somewhat new archetype, but it is a combo deck with some resiliency because it needs one token producer to get going. I am open to any suggestions on how to improve this deck.

Deck Reviews / [EDH / Commander] Kess Token Storm

Kess Token Storm

I am building a Kess token storm deck, and I currently need to make some final cuts. I am really stuck on what to remove since this isn't a very fleshed out archetype and I really like a lot of the cards in this deck. If you could suggest some cards to cut in order to make it down to about 65 cards that would be really helpful. Since it is a strange archetype for grixis, if you have any cards you really think I should add (Skirk Prospector ?) (Dark Prophecy ?) I would be open to any suggestions as well. If you want an overview of the deck the is one below ;D.

This deck is in an archetype I haven't really seen in grixis. It seems to play out more like a Wort, the Raidmother deck than anythings else. The general plan of the deck is to make a bunch of tokens either from Young Pyromancer effects and playing a bunch of instant and sorcery spells, or from one shot effects like Hordeling Outburst. Kess is a great commander for this deck because she allows those one shot token effects which only generate a few tokens on their own to become two shot effects and therefore much more valuable. Once you have created a bunch of tokens, there are two main plans for winning. The first is the obvious plan of playing something like an Eldrazi Monument and just beating down. The other more fun method of winning involves what I would call the token storm plan. You generally want a couple of Young Pyromancer effects out to amass a small army (get it) of tokens. You then use those tokens for mana by either sacrificing them to cards like Phyrexian Altar, or by casting Battle Hymn. You can then use that maa to cast more spells, which makes more tokens and it just kind of snowballs. Some cards that help the snowball are Zada, Hedron Grinder effects and targeted cantrips (Expedite) which let you draw a card for each creature you control. The endgame involves either generating enough mana to Comet Storm people to death, Making enough tokens with an Impact Tremors in play, or creating an infinite combo. The combos in this deck are The Locust God + Skullclamp + Ashnod's Altar to draw your whole deck then win with Reiterate + Battle Hymn/Mana Geyser to generate infinite mana which wins with the Comet Storm among other things. There are also some wonky Ral, Storm Conduit + copy effects combos. The copy effects are to help the storm kill as well.

Yahenni Nonland Ideas

I am trying to build a yahenni deck, but I am having trouble making the last cuts. I think it is because I'm attached to some of the cards. Assume the mana base has urborg and coffers when thinking about expedition map. Please comment 8 to 10 cards to cut. Thanks for the help.

People have been figuring out what the cards are. http://mythicspoiler.com/ixa/  This is one of the worst leaks in magic history. What do you guys think?

General Magic / Atlazan Speculation
« on: March 05, 2017, 06:49:34 pm »
Wizards leaked some packaging designs on a set called Atlazan (link to images: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/atlazan-an-atlantean-plane) There are many theories out there about it being like the mythical city of Atlantis. My personal opinion is that it will be based on the Aztecs since at the top of the packs, the design looks like the Aztec calendar. In addition, the Aztec were originally thought to be from a part of Mexico called Aztlan before they were driven into a lake where they built a floating city. This is all just speculation, and I want to hear some other opinions.

General Magic / Confusing Gigadrowse Gameplay
« on: May 30, 2016, 04:48:51 pm »
I'm currently very confused about how the following situation would work:

A player is trying to resolve a Time Warp with 3 mana untapped and a Gigadrowse in hand. They cast the Time Warp and the opponents pays all of their remaining mana to Rewind it. The player casting the Time Warp attempts to Gigadrowse their lands, in hopes that it will fizzle the Rewind.

Does the Rewind fizzle? Is it returned to the hand as if it was never cast? Can the Gigadrowse target the lands or are they already tapped?

General Magic / Emrakul on Innistrad. If not, who?
« on: May 16, 2016, 01:55:44 pm »
Is it just me, or does everyone notice that there are more and more hints about Emrakul being on Innistrad? There are different entries on Tamiyo's Journal depending whether, or not it is foil, or prerelease. Look it up and see the theories about it. Also, in an episode of the Community Super League, the professor "accidently" talks about Emrakul being on Innistrad. Lastly, a huge hint comes from what Ugin tells Jace, "But do not forget: they came as 3." -Ugin's Insight. There is also some evidence for Marit Lage, but I think there is a good chance that it is Emrakul.

General Magic / Favorite Flavor Text
« on: April 03, 2016, 03:35:09 pm »
Flavor text is something in magic that helps make the game fun. My friend gathered all of the cards that told the story of The Theriad in Theros. I keep some very bad cards in my trade binder just for their flavor text, and recently I started to wonder which card had my favorite flavor text. I checked through my cards, and after much contemplation, I chose Warleader's Helix. Deranged Assistant was an honorable mention because my brother found it hilarious ???. I was wondering what other magic players think of as their favorite flavor text. I hope to hear a few funny ones.

General Magic / What is everyones top 10 favorite cards
« on: February 25, 2016, 11:55:34 pm »
I'm Really curious about magic players favorite cards. To me it can tell people a lot about what type of player you are.
here is my list:

10. Halimar Depths: This is my favorite land of all time. The ability to set the top 3 cards of your library turn 1 is amazing. It gives you the upper hand late game as well when you need to draw a win condition in a board stall.

9.Hardened Scales: There are so many +1+1 counter related mechanics. Evolve, Renown, Outlast, Support etc. The ability to get an extra +1+1 counter for 1 green mana is amazing. I also like it because it has won me quite a few tournament games.

8.Counterspell: I know this card is a love it or hate it card, but I usually run it in tournaments as a sideboard card. If a tournament has a lot of serious players I might play it all the time, but I also take it out from time to time. Occasionally, I will run a counter deck because I love to say no, and that is why I like this card so much. 2 mana to say no to whatever insanely overpowered spell a player is casting is one of the best feelings in the world.

7.Platinum Emperion: The second my friend played this card against me I instantly fell in love with it. It can be used with the golem boosting splicers of New Phyrexia, but best of all, YOUR LIFE TOTAL CAN'T CHANGE. If you can give it hexproof, you cannot lose through damage. It can be run in anything from affinity to mill.

6.Monastery Swiftspear: This card brings out the speed magic player in me. It is also great for combat tricks because of it's prowess ability. While many people might disagree with me, I think it is a better card for an aggro deck than goblin guide.

5.Phage, the Untouchable: Whenever I cast this card my friend says one word that sums up my favorite part of this card. Gametouch. The ability to instantly kill an opponent through 1 point of damage makes this card perfect for control. If Phage didn't have the part about only being able cast it from your hand unless you want to lose the game, it would be illegal. It is also because of that, the worst commander ever created ;).

4.Karn Liberated: Arguably the perfect card for tron decks. All 3 of its abilities are powerful and it starts at 6 loyalty, mind blown. Even crazier, it lets you restart the game with everything (except auras) he exiled.

3.Supreme Verdict: As board wipes go, this is my favorite. 4 mana for a boardwipe your opponent can't counter is pretty overpowered. It is an amazing card for control. I personally think that they are underrated in the magic world. Wild Nacatl is talked about all the time as an aggro staple and I think this should be the same thing but for control.

2.Palladium Myr: Palladium Myr has so many uses. Ramp, wastes, and best of all, the infinite mana combination. With this card along with 2 Myr Galvinizers on the battlefield, I have never lost. It is also useful for activating wastes abilities which are super powerful for their CMC. Just using it for ramp in casual decks is also fun, but I''ll usually find a way to throw in a few Myr Galvinizers just so that it is possible to get infinite mana.

1.Temporal Mastery: My favorite card of all time has to be Temporal Mastery. A modern legal way to take a 2 mana extra turn is flat out unbelievable. I am obsessed with extra turn decks, and this, in my opinion, is by far the best modern legal extra turn card. I would sell the bank to get a full play set of these cards. Luckily, I don't have to because they are under $10 each. In case you were just skimming, I repeat, UNDER $10 EACH! This is far and away my favorite magic card.
