General Magic / Ral Combo Thoughts?
« on: April 21, 2019, 08:04:43 pm »
I'm not a big standard player and only play the format on arena. I want to try and replicate a casual deck I have that runs Sentinel Tower + Thousand-Year Storm. Looking at that decks list it would appear a decent amount are standard legal and Ral, Storm Conduit could substitute in for Sentinel Tower.

Looking for opinions on what people would run alongside Ral, Storm Conduit?

Some cards that caught my eye from the new set are God-Eternal Kefnet for discounts, Narset's Reversal for a 'recycling' effect, and Finale Of Promise for a late game finisher.

General Magic / Cube & Unstable Variants
« on: December 15, 2017, 05:28:07 am »
My playgroup is looking to pool our cards together to make a couple Cubes that are 100% Unstable cards (all of #1-#216).

I'm sure there are other people who have already done so or plan to, and I have a question. Did you or are you planning on using the various versions of cards to put in the Cube? Some cards are fundamentally the same in name only (Everythingamajig and Very Cryptic Command) while others are small changes such as art of flavour text (Extremely Slow Zombie and Novellamental). It would be a shame to overlook the other 3-5 versions of some cards, but it feels that it goes against the singleton idea of Cube.

Thoughts?

Deck Reviews / [EDH / Commander] Balan-tron, Weapon Knight
« on: November 01, 2017, 06:57:34 am »

This is my first attempt at an EDH deck. I bought Feline Ferocity due to kitties (no Squirrel themed one  :'( ), but Balan looked like a fun general.

I'm looking for any input in regards to potential upgrades, but also any advice on changing the breakdown of each type (too many creatures? more basic lands? etc.).

PS
I did add 6 cards to the maybeboard to potentially buy as upgrades (I own copies of Mirage Mirror and Sigil Of Distinction, but not the other 4).

Deck Reviews / Creepy Crawly - Spider Tribal (Multiplayer Focus)
« on: October 12, 2017, 06:40:08 am »

I was looking for suggestions if anyone has any. I figure the synergy could be better, but the idea is to play more passive until able to make a big play.

The games will typically be 4+ people, counting myself, and is Casual format. I think I might have too many creatures, but I also wanted to focus on triggering Delirium on Ishkanah, Grafwidow as often as possible.

Overall I went for a win by numbers approach with Ishkanah, Grafwidow and/or (probably a combination of both more often) a win by -1/-1 counters with Obelisk Spider.

To be honest my playgroup joked about making a Spider Tribal deck as no one has one and I kind of just threw a bunch of things together as a rough first version.

Deck Reviews / [Casual] Fire At Will

Just looking for any suggestions as there are things I might have overlooked or ignored due to price (and might upgrade to at a later point).

The deck is meant for multiplayer, which could decide on suggestions.

> Chandra and the creatures all involve pinging from casting spells or getting reset from spells to set up strategic turns.
> I tried to mainly include spells that can deal 2-3 direct damage to a player. I'm not as concerned about creatures, but do have a few spells to deal with either.
> The ideal combo is to have cards in graveyard to trigger Pyromancer Ascension, cast a Insult // Injury, and go wild with double unpreventable damage. This seems to be where a well timed Flame Rift could really win the game if I pinged everyone low enough.

General Magic / Zombie Prices
« on: July 10, 2017, 10:05:23 pm »
With the release Amonkhet there was a rise (from the grave 8)) in popularity of Zombies in Standard. This naturally affected the prices for most of the popular cards and they have been holding steady since (more or less). Kind of has me bummed out as I play Casual and EDH and it has become harder to put a reasonably priced deck together.

Can we expect some of these cards to ever go as low as their pre-Amonkhet prices? Would we have to wait for these sets to rotate out? I only got back into Magic earlier this year and I haven't had too much experience with prices as Standard sets rotate out.

Kind of bummed I didn't throw together a Zombie deck prior to Amonkhet.

Deck Reviews / [Casual] Schrodinger's Cats

Looking for any advice to improve. The deck itself is meant more for fun and to be played in a casual manner.

Below is what I have included in the deck description to explain a few of my choices:
Gate To The Afterlife: Gain Life from creatures dying and fish for a Gift when the time is right. It also allows me to discard some Embalm/Eternalize cards to fill graveyard.
God-Pharaoh's Gift: Bring back any creature in a new 4/4 body (and multiple copies if synergy cards are in play).
Mirage Mirror: Target a Regal Caracal for an extra buff or Anointed Procession/Parallel Lives to pump out tokens for example.
Mimic Vat: Create tokens that can trigger ETB effects (unlike Mirage Mirror). Said tokens receive haste (and multiple copies if synergy cards are in play)!
Lifecrafter's Bestiary: Might be considered an odd choice, but by recycling creatures I would prefer the scry + card draw this offers.

Deck Reviews / [Casual] Tiny Peckers

I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions to make the deck more harassing in the early game? I tried to stick with low CMC creatures and have Warden Of Evos Isle to help with the 3-4 CMC creatures. I tried to keep the buff/utility cards at 2-3 CMC with things such as Favorable Winds and Military Intelligence.

Migratory Route and Panoptic Mirror would probably be the first things I cut due to poor synergy, but it gives me an option to create 4-8 Birds per turn at upkeep if the game goes longer.

I'm also trying to keep the deck on the cheaper side, but am willing to consider a more expensive option if it has good synergy.

Deck Reviews / [Casual] B/G Counters
« on: April 02, 2017, 11:37:59 pm »
https://deckstats.net/decks/81091/701540-b-g-counters

***Note that this deck is for Casual multiplayer games.

Looking for suggestions on replacements or changing the amount of certain cards to prevent redundancy. I tried to keep the mana curve between 1-4 CMC so that I can always play something and potentially have extra mana for abilities that require payment. I cut out a fair amount of cards to keep it at 60 cards and kept the runner ups in the Maybeboard.

Here is some of my thought process for the cards and why I chose them to include:

Winding Constrictor , Corpsejack Menace , and Forgotten Ancient // 4 copies auto-include as it's what the deck was built around
Nissa, Voice of Zendikar // Her -2 ability is thematic and +1 gives me some fodder. Her -7 is situational, but I included other card draw methods and some creatures with Life link.
Triumph of Ferocity and Ordeal of Nylea // They provide card draw based on pumping up my creatures. Thinning out Land from my library with the latter seems useful.
Feast on the Fallen // Perfect for multiplayer games. I get to cash in on other opponents whacking one another.
Aetherborn Marauder // Flying is nice and Life link will help me stay in the game. If I have combo pieces out it wouldn't be hard to gain a lot of counters on it.
Avatar of the Resolute // Trample is great for offense while Reach can be used situationally on defense. Playing it with only 1 +1/+1 is fine as I can pump it with other cards later.
Chronomaton // If I have leftover mana I can pump it up. Gets a lot scarier when more synergy cards start hitting the board for more counters.
Hydra Broodmaster // Base stats aren't bad for the initial cost, but the Monstrosity ability is why I included it. It can be a win more card, but also situational to hold onto in case my board gets wiped.
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord // 1 copy for the 1BG ability. Might be overkill considering I can win with large creatures.
Kalonian Hydra // High chance of drawing attention from removal spells, but who could pass up the synergy!
Managorger Hydra // It's basically Forgotten Ancient Junior. While it can't share its counters it can come out a turn earlier on curve and has Trample.
Varolz, the Scar-Striped // Screams "jackpot". Most of my creatures are 4 or less CMC and all have the potential to be large when they die. Deadly combo with the synergy cards.

General Magic / Ruling on multiple triggers of some ETB effects
« on: March 29, 2017, 08:02:23 am »
Some friends recently got me back into the game and I've mostly been playing casual multiplayer games. Sometimes I try and look rulings up on my phone if I get stumped or get mixed answers.

One of the decks I have enjoyed playing (as Kaladesh and Revolt were the new sets when I started) is my Aetherborn/Servo deck. I just made some changes that includes running all three modules now and a couple Panharmonicon. I think I have most of the interactions down, but want clarification on a couple:

#1 Ironclad Revolutionary
Reading the rulings for this card I take it there is 0% chance it can trigger any of it's effects multiple times? While that is dissapointing if that's the case it still has synergy with the modules at least.

#2 Aetherborn Marauder
I understand that all counters are moved as one instance, but would triggering it's ETB be redundant in this case? Can it even trigger more than once? My understanding of the verbiage is that it takes the counters, but isn't generating new ones on its own perse. So when it ETB's it would first move X counters to itself and any additional triggers would simply fizzle? I still love the card either way.

Otherwise I think I have things down. I haven't played the deck yet since I made the alterations and don't want to slow the game down by bugging everyone while they're taking their turns.
