General Magic / Re: Games you've enjoyed
« on: June 12, 2019, 05:02:11 am »
I was playing a janky Yidris build and the game was the most boring game and the most crazy game I've ever played at the same time. My opponents were playing Niv-Mizzet Parun Control, Ur-Dragon, and Lazav Dimir Mastermind. It was my turn 10 and I cast Sunbird's Invocation then Aetherflux Reservoir then got Marchesa off of the Sunbird's trigger. I then pass the turn with Godo on the battlefield as well as Waste Not (I played them earlier) and Helm of the Host near the top of my library from Niv's Commit//Memory. Godo also had Whispering Madness ciphered onto him. Ur-Dragon hits me with Steel Hellkite and activates it for 4 destroying Marchesa and Aetherflux Reservoir. Lazav Swings with Etali that he stole from my graveyard earlier and gets a decent board state from that and passes (By now my opponents were running out of cards in hand as Niv kept their engines from working). Niv aftermaths Memory from his graveyard shuffling away my Helm of the Host which I thought was my only chance of winning and passes to me. I untap my board and draw the top cad of my library, Windfall. I cast windfall hoping to get value off of my Waste Not but before that I get duskmantle guildmage off the sunbird's trigger. I activate the duskmantle guildmage dealing about 5 damage to each of my opponents and getting a 13 card hand off the waste not. Unfortunately, even with all the black mana I the only spell I could cast was some dumb 2 mana artifact I can't even remember. Sunbird's triggers and I get Aether Tunnel, one of only 3 cards left in my deck that would make Godo unblockable. I then swing with godo twice using Whispering madness to wheel them to death.

TL:DR I got extremely lucky with Sunbird's Invocation after getting mana screwed to win the game.

Azra Oddsmaker is awesome keep that in.
Fight with fire is fine.
Ghostfire is fine.
Hackrobat is fine.
Lava coil is great.
Mountain is a great card.
Never Happened is fine.
Ravenous Chupacabra is fine.
Swamp is a great card.
Take out everything else.
I know it hurts to take out so many cool cards but cuts have to be made to make the deck better. Next you'll want to go down to 20-22 lands. Burn is more of an aggressive deck and my budget burn deck can sometimes keep a hand with only 1 land and survive and without all the 5+ mana creatures you will be fine.

Now you have 22 lands and the 12 cards I suggested to keep.
Thats a total of 34 cards, not enough for a deck. Some great cheap
cards I would suggest for you would be:
Burn Spells:
Shock
Lightning Strike
Lava Dart
Lightning Bolt (More expen$ive or $)
Needle Drop ($)
Cards that boost your burn spells:
Guttersnipe
Thermo-Alchemist
Electrostatic Field
Harness the Storm
Burning Vengeance (Works well with Harness the Storm)
Other Spells:
Faithless Looting
Light up the Stage ($)
Risk Factor ($)

You also may want to consider going mono-red. This not only increases your consistency with your land but saves you money for dual lands allowing you to use more powerful cards.
Here's a budget shell for a mono-red burn deck off the top of my head.
4 Shock
4 Lightning Strike
4 Lava Dart
4 Magma Jet
4 Rift Bolt
3 Harness the Storm
4 Guttersnipe
4 Thermo-Alchemist
2 Magus of the Wheel
21 Mountain
1 Detection Tower

Personally, I have a janky burn deck that uses Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded and Faithless Looting and Magus of the Wheel to ditch cards into the graeyard and use Harness the Storm to dig them out and using the cast triggers off of Guttersnipe to burn them out as I Lightning Bolt their creatures.

I hope this helps you a little bit. :)

No dual lands? If you're trying to be on a budget Choked Estuary is the best. Also Vicious Rumors can work quite well in the Duskcrank build. Rapid Hybridization and Pongify for creature-based matchups?

You put Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder higher than I would think with my very limited understanding of the format. Is there a combo that I'm missing?

I got it down to 103 cards and I will probably be able to take a couple out after some play testing. Thank you for all of the help!

I have 115 cards at the time of posting this and I honestly don't know where to go from this point. Feel free to suggest additions that aren't in the deck as well as suggesting things to remove. Thanks  :)

Also cascade is a may so in the off chance I cascade into Phage I won't lose on the spot but because I have so much unblockable stuff in the deck (atleast currently) it can just take out players if not dealt with.

Thank you Morganator and Judaspreiester for the suggestions! I will be taking out the cards Morganator said and will do some switching around of the lands. I've never seen Time reversal before that's quite nice. I am trying to keep the deck relatively cheep so I will not be running the Wheel of Fate or Winds of Change.

Thank you for the suggestions!
I agree that I should run more removal and bounce spells to be more interactive but I don't understand your point with the graveyard strategy. My only graveyard interaction is my couple delve cards along with of course the Lazav you mentioned but Vigor specifically stay out of the graveyard. I mainly put in the Lazav as a sort of toolbox card for a late-game strategy where I turn him into an Arixmethes out of nowhere or something along those lines. Rather than surveil cards I run a couple of wheel cards such as Magus of the Wheel and Windfall.
I do really appreciate your suggestion for Sword of the Animist as well but once again I don't understand why Aetherflux Reservoir is good to take out. Drawing it in the early parts of the game allow me to take damage from some threats while I develop my board plus I gain life off of Yidris's many cascades. It also works as a great finisher and it acts as a big threat while it's on the board. While life gain isn't my main strategy I find it very important.

Could anyone give me some suggestions to improve this deck while still keeping it under 115$ with the deckstats price? Thanks! (By the deckstats price I mean the price shown in the overview tab.)
