Commander Discussion / Re: Which Tribes Don't Have a Commander?
« on: January 30, 2021, 02:03:29 pm »
Seton, Krosan Protector doesn't feel like a druid tribal commander. He doesn't give druids some kind of tribal identity; he just turns them into mana dorks, which some druids already are. Might as well play elves at that point. I also think WotC would have to have an expansion that makes druids an important tribe in that world's design in order to really flesh them out (perhaps an expansion based on Celtic mythology with gods based on those in the Celtic pantheon).

I read something about a Celtic druid ritual involving the wearing of a white cloak and the sacrifice of white bulls so WotC could add druids to White to make the colour pie's redheaded stepchild a more balanced colour. Foretell would fit a Celtic-inspired world as well; they brought back Morph in a precon so eventually bringing back Foretell is not unimaginable.

What we really need though is a Brushwagg commander.

Upvoting because White-Wolf and the World of Darkness are amazing. Long live the White-Wolf of the 90s.

I don't know how all-in on the coil tokens you want to go, but I'm sure Koma would be even better if you could create tons of the tokens to tap stuff down and make sure no one can get rid of him. Doubling Season, Second Harvest and Parallel Lives would be useful, especially if your token-creating creatures remain in the deck's final list.

Whelming Wave and Slinn Voda, the Rising Deep work well because they're asymmetrical board wipes in your deck.

Have you considered Paradox Haze? An additional upkeep means an extra coil. I'd also consider the original Sakashima. ANything that allows you to copy your Commander while ignoring the legendary rule seems pretty good.

Cloven Casting is neat, but it costs 7 and doesn't do anything immediately. You then need to cast a multi-colour instant or sorcery to actually get some value out of the enchantment. Seeing as Izzet isn't the ramp colour combination of choice, I personally wouldn't bother with the card.

Commander Discussion / Re: Coffers/Urborg outside of mono black

I used Urborg and Coffers in my Kess, Dissident Mage deck. It won with a huge Exsanguinate or Torment of Hailfire usually (sometimes with an Exproriate). I ran Expedition Map to tutor for it (along with a few other tutors of course). I never had mana issues.

I believe Zendikar's design was inspired by the dungeon-crawling and the exploring inherent in a DnD campaign.

Commander Deck Reviews / Re: Kwende - Knight Tribal (budget)

I'm not sure Tome of Legends is worth it in this deck. It is best used in a deck where you intend on casting (because there's some cost reduction) your commander repeatedly, or can flicker your commander a lot (e.g. Norin the Wary).

Does Endless Atlas bust your notion of budget? If not, this is excellent card draw in mono-colour decks. I would replace Tome of Legends for Endless Atlas personally.

Edit: I just noticed that Endless Atlas is in your deck already.

This seems like a fun casual deck.

Mana Tithe is a card I would take out. Outside of a fast cEDH meta (if even at that), I don't think it's going to be very useful. I feel like it's going to be a dead card in your hand most of the time.

Staff of Nin is another card I'd take out. It's expensive, the pinging ability is near-useless and the card draw kicks in on your next turn so your opponents have a chance to remove it before you even break card parity.

I would also include a couple of non-basic lands. Secluded Steppe and Shefet Dunes would be the first 2 I'd consider. Then you could look at Sandstone Bridge, Sejiri Steppe and Windbrisk Heights if a few utility lands coming into play tapped won't affect your tempo.

If you feel as if you need more first strike on your board, Advance Scout not only has first strike, but can hand it out to any creature of yours in need. Knighthood does the same, but I don't know if your deck actually needs it. Cartouche of Solidarity could be good too.

Here are some other creatures to consider if you want to up your threat density or swap out creatures you feel are subpar: Encampment Keeper, Elite Inquisitor, Consul's Lieutenant, Ballynock Cohort, Chieftain en-Dal, Mosquito Guard, Longbow Archer and Porcelain Legionnaire.

I completely forgot about Zendikar Rising and the party mechanic! This NEEDS to be in the Forgotten Realms set for sure.

...and this just goes to show how easily we forget the previous sets because there is always something new choo chooing along the hype train.

If budget is not a concern, Soldevi Excavations is a great land to have in such a deck.

I actually hope we don't see established Planeswalkers in the Forgotten Realms expansion. I would very much like this expansion to be more of a stand-alone set focusing exclusively on important Forgotten Realms characters and objects and places.

I forgot about Level Up. That is definitely on theme and it would be a missed flavour opportunity to not have it as a mechanic in the set.

If you don't want wheels, I'd go with another Izzet commander then. Arjun is not a great goodstuff commander and his chaotic ability is not a value engine. If he's your commander, your deck will be better if you actually use him beneficially by either weaponizing your frequent draws with a card like Psychosis Crawler, or going all-in on wheels and punishing the discard with Glint-Horn Buccaneer or Brallin, Skyshark Rider. Obstinate Familiar, Bag of Holding and Library of Leng are great in decks that require you to discard a lot.

General Magic / Re: What do you want to see in Forgotten Realms next year?
« on: December 31, 2020, 03:46:43 am »
I grew up reading DnD novels in the early and mids 90s so I really hope we see legendary creature cards for most of the important Forgotten Realms characters. This goes against my anti-intellectual property-crossover stance, but unlike The Walking Dead, Forgotten Realms actually fits the fantasy world of Magic: the Gathering.

Besides the usual suspects, I'd love to see a Guenhwyvar card. I hope we see tons of new legendary creatures from the DnD world, in the same way Commander Legends was loaded with new Commander options.
