Why not run Eerie Ultimatum over Primeval’s Glorious Rebirth? Sure, you can’t ramp into it with Mana Vault, Crypt, and Som Ring but it does bring back Doubling Season, Deepglow, card draw enchantments, and any other important non legendary permanents.

Hi,
I already tried to replace Primevals' Glorious Rebirth with Eerie Ultimatum but wasn't able to use it since the mana costs are too difficult to met.
Primevals' Glorious Rebirth was always better and there is no need to run both.
This decks runs 24 legendary creatures and/or planeswalkers and one of them (Atraxa) is sitting in the commandzone, so there shouldn't be a problem to cast Primevals' Glorious Rebirth if needed.

Deck Comments / Re: Tovolar, Dire Overlord - The Howlpack - Comments
« on: February 27, 2022, 05:22:43 pm »
Hi SMFrenzel,
maybe I can help you here.

To use the Daybound ability of the Howlpack Piper, The Celestus MUST be on the battlefield. Otherwise you won't be able to use it.

This is not correct.
Tovolar will only turn night in upkeep if you have at least 3 werewolfves or wolves.
If you have for example Tovolar and the Howlpack on the field, you can use her twice to bring in Ulrich and something else into the game.
This way you have two new creatures without casting anything at all, which means it will turn night the next upkeep and you can flip all werewolves and let ulrich fight another creature (if no one else played something in your turn, because old werewolves want transform then).

Also if you only have the howlpack on the battlefield you can use her as a elvish piper which is pretty nice because you are not casting the creatures.

And as the old Werwolves didn't receive an errata, they do not react to Tovolar, Dire Overlord ....

As I find these cards in nearly every Tovolar deck: Am I wrong, or why are they used ?

Tovolar miracle text:
24.09.2021    The second ability of Tovolar, Dire Overlord seems a little strange because Tovolar and other Human Werewolf creatures in this set transform when it becomes night anyway. Tovolar, however, isn't content to transform Werewolf creatures from just one set. This ability will allow you to transform Human Werewolf creatures from previous visits to Innistrad as well.

See: https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=535043

Important part is ...Then transform any number of Human werewolves you control. This is for your old werewolves.

I hope I could help you with this informations.

What is the right situation to use Aminatou's ultimate ability? If you are able get Aminatou's loyalty that high you must have a pretty good boardstate. Are you going to want to switch your boardstate with someone else at that point?

Aminatou's ultimate is more yolo then needed, since I'm not playing a flickering deck. The most important ability is her flicker in this deck.
Neverthless I already used her ability plenty, since you can ult her without a good board state.
For example, I can play aminatou and right after that I can also play deepglow skate and ult her if someone else have a really good boardstate.
Her minus ability will also give you back your stolen stuff since it will bring it back under your control.

Is the combo with The Chain Veil and Teferi, Temporal Archmage an infinite combo, or just a really good value play?

With Aminatou it can be an infinite combo.
Example boardstate:

1. Mana Vault/Sol Ring/Ancient Tomb/Mana crypt
2. at least 3 Lands or any permanent which can produce mana
3. Aminatou, teferi and the Chain Veil

lets say everything is tapped because you cast the chain veil in this turn.

Now 4 you can use Teferi 4 times. Everytime untap chain veil and 3 mana producer (one of them have to generate at least 2 mana)
Tefery loyality should be 1 now.

You can also use aminatou 4 times. If needed use her plus ability 3 times and her minus ability to flicker teferi.

You can use teferi again 5 times.

Use aminatous minus

you can use teferi 9 times, and so on.

You're using a lot of spells that create creature tokens in order to protect your planeswalkers from combat damage. You're also using Tainted Aether for the same purpose. What stops these cards from actively working against each other?

They are for different situations. Tainted Aether prevents the opponent from being able/wanting to play many creatures at all.
While the token generators ensure that I can defend myself against existing creatures.
I can also just sac tokens instead of lands so it is not a big problem to have both on board.

In the strategy section you mention that there are no planeswalkers with the text "you win the game". What do you think of Jace, Wielder of Mysteries?

Valid point! But I have a huge problem with this jace. It will turn this deck into a Tainted pact/demonic consultation/thassa's oracle deck and doesnt fit into the Planeswalker archetype.
Since I'm not running any of these cards, he is just the planewalker version of laboratory maniac.

But if someone wants to play this, he can easily do, since this deck has a tainted pact mana base.

There's no mention of Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider anywhere. Isn't that also a really good doubling effect?

He is way to expensive {4}(b)(b), but I should mention him in the single card discussion. I'll add it.

If you're using Primevals' Glorious Rebirth, would you also want to use Eerie Ultimatum?

I already tried to replace Primevals' Glorious Rebirth with Eerie Ultimatum but wasn't able to use it since the mana costs are too difficult to met.
Primevals' Glorious Rebirth was always better and there is no need to run both.

Would Bloom Tender, Faeburrow Elder, and Crystalline Crawler be good mana ramp for this deck?

Yep they are all good ones and they will synergize with Teferi, Who Slows the Sunset (which is a new card) and Teferi, Temporal Archmage.
Bloom tender could replace the sakura tribe elder! Thank you for this

I have a few questions and suggestions. I've also sent you a private message with all the spelling mistakes you'll need to correct.

Hi Morganator! Thank you for your support, I updated the primer as you suggested.

It would be a good idea to reorder the cards in the inclusions and exclusions sections into alphabetical order. That way it will be easy for a reader to find a particular card.

Done.

It seems like this deck's card advantage is entirely dependent on Tovolar being on the battlefield. What do you do if he keeps getting removed, and how well can this deck recover from a boardwipe?

It is true, that this deck is entirely dependent on Tovolar, since werewolf tribal isn't really strong and letting them transform into werewolf in edh is quite impossible without tovolar.
Cards like heroic intervention, bear umbra, full moon's rise and yavimaya hollow will help to protect our board against board wipes.
In addition tovolar only costs 3 and can be recasted easily and he is a draw engine on his own.

It is also important to play smart and don't put all the creatures on the battlefield if no protection or haste is available.

A lot of mass removal are hard to handle for any creature based aggro deck but with haste and good ramp it is possible to come back quick after a mass removal.

I'm thinking to play wrap in vigor instead of cindervines, since I got a new removal with boseiju, who endures all. What do you think?

In the single card discussion you bring up Return to Nature twice.

Yeah cuz I'm dumg :-D

You explained why you're not using Beast Whisperer, but doesn't Guardian Project have the same downside you mentioned?

True. The reason is, that the cast trigger doesn't synergize with in search of greatness or howlpack piper and it is also on a creature body which will be easier to remove than an enchantment.
In addition Guardian project is {3}(g) while beast whisperer is {2}(g)(g).

In the "Strengths" section you mention that it's good against combo decks, but in the "Weaknesses" section you say it isn't. Which one is it?

It is really hard to say. Actually if there is 1 combo deck on the table you can just overrun it. But in a heavy combo enviroment, you can't kill all of them fast enough. And against high controll decks with many mass removal it can be a really really hard game as well.
I changed the primer.

You mention a couple of times that other players are hesitant to attack you because your creatures are bigger. But if you attack, then you won't have any blockers. What strategy do you adopt against a token swarm deck that has no problem throwing expendable creatures at you?

In that same vein, how do you protect against a voltron deck or a Gruul stompy deck where their creatures are much stronger than yours?

In my experience, attacking with the deck is almost equivalent to creature removal. Players block to a) prevent dmg and/or b) reduce draw. So I weigh up whether it makes sense to simply go to the opponent who has nothing on the field. Or whether I attack the opponent with many blockers to clear up the field or just cause immense damage. Aggro decks tend to be very simple, as attacking is often the only option. at the same time you always have to think about what you want to achieve with your attack.
Due to the kessig effect of Tovolar and some buffs like Berserkers' Onslaught/Unnatural Growth/Kruin Outlaw // Terror of Kruin Pass, the players are usually also more careful in the block, since a no block can often end in defeat.
In addition, after the attack I'll draw some cards and can play some blockers if needed.

Voltron decks have a huge bottleneck, which is that they trying to kill with their commander. Most of time it is just enough to kill him or block him.
Other gruul stompy decks are just lacking of that insane draw engine and they not that fast and have way more problems to come back after a mass removal. For those it is goot to attack with some suprise mechanics like Howlpack Resurgence or Moonmist.
Moonmist will only prevent their dmg and can transform some of the werwolfs for more unexpected dmg.
Moonmist can also help to prevent dmg if someone attacks me and I can kill the creatures from the enemy.

General Magic / Re: Losing interest?
« on: November 23, 2021, 11:48:59 am »
Hi All,
I totally agree with WWolfe....unfurtonately I'm also losing interest in this game more and more.
But for Innistrad I was absolutely in to it, because I could improve my loved Edgar Markov Deck and finally build a EDH Werwolf tribal deck with Tovolar. So this block was very special for me.

But still there are some point, which make this game more and more uninteresting to me.

First of all the prices...each card which is just a bit better than average is >10€. Magic is as expensive as never before....If I check my old decks every god damn card is so fucking expensive. I Bought necropotence for 3€ 2018 now it is 30€ same is true for many other cards no matter if they are reprinted or not. People are willing to paying way too much money for cards and this is why it gets more and more expensive. This is also true for new products not only single cards. For example war of the sparks was 85€ for a Display at my local store...Innistrad crimson vow is 110€.

Next are these IP cards like walking dead and stranger things...limited artworks are absolutely fine for me but limited cards just for cash grabing reasons is an absolutely no go.

Also the card mechanics are just dumb...they printing just better versions of old cards for the eternal formats and increasing the power more and more.

The reprinting strategy is another annoying fact about mtg. I mean a lot of ppl are waiting for some reprints and then we get a god damn "masters" reprint edition for 250€ for an display....mate we want a reprint to decrease the prices and not to hold them on the same lvl.

Yeah last but not least the price strategy of wizard and the stores...like "you want to buy a pre con commander? which one because each have a different price, because  the prices of the single cards inside it are different on the secondary market, so I have the change the prices as well..." uhhh but you buying them all for the same price or not? "yes I do but mtg isn't lucrative therefore i have to base my prices on the secondary market"....

I still love to play with my friends and build some new decks and trying to play cEDH or something else but the last 2 years Magic getting worser and worser.

I'll still play magic and build new decks and buy some cards if they are fitting into my decks but I'll not be that focused anymore and check the next edition and spoilers and watching the content creators.

Thank you so much for your explanations! We have a pretty budget playgroup of 10 guys so every kind of decks are around. I was always looking for some underdog Deck that won’t OP-combo turn 1 or take 10 turns to play the first card :D. I really think I found it. Since 5k to spend on a Deck are a little too much i thought about taking some expensive lands out etc. your budget variant looks also very nice! Do you think it would loose its viability with more basic lands? I really really love Cpt. K‘iirk  and I am used to people focusing my commander … apparently they don’t like my scarab god. I will order my first cards tomorrow for that deck. I am very excited 😂👍🏼! Gonna start with all of the budget cards in your deck!

But it definitely looks super fun! Can’t wait to start it haha. Would you say it is more reactive or a pute combo Deck?

You're welcome!

5k is really a lot for a deck, but most cards have only risen in price in the last 1-2 years, so that the deck was not that expensive at first, but is currently hardly affordable. Therefore I can absolutely understand if you want to build a cheaper variant and I am happy if I can help you with it.

Do you think it would loose its viability with more basic lands? - Nah I think you can cut tainted pact and demonic consultation and put in some basic lands if you want to. I'm avoiding basic lands just for tainted pact and the option to win with the enemy thassa's oracle. If you don't need this win option you can easily cut tainted pact, demonic consultation and praetor's grasp.
If you have a praetor's grasp you can still play it to exile the win con or key cards from your enemy.

Would you say it is more reactive or a pure combo Deck? - It's a mix of both but more combo. This decks contains a lot of tutors so you can just look for any card you want. You can go for a combo card or for an answer but most of time just searching for the combo pieces and win the game is the best option.

It only becomes problematic when K'rrik is the strongest deck at the table and your friends agree to focus on you all the time. Since the strategy is very competitive you have to be careful not to be the main problem all the time. To bring in more stability, you can simply replace the expensive tutors with draw and removal and add 2-4 basiclands to the landbase by cutting of some of the very expensive rocks like LED or mox diamond. It is best if you make some budget changes that also fit the meta of your playgroup and also help you against the decks. My variant of the deck is geared towards having the frequently played cEDH commanders as opponents.

Hey mate, really love the work you put into this. I play dimir right now but was always thinking about playing a moon black version. Before I start pumping money into a new project I would very much ask you some questions.

Is it more for 1vs1 or does it also do well in a all vs all Szenario? Do you feel it lacks compared to more colors in power? And do you think I could also make it work in a little bit more Budget variant?

Thank you very much in advance! Love the deck and explanations!

Hey Schnoggi,
thank you very much for the kind words. It makes me happy to hear that you like my deck/work.

Now let me answer your questions.

Is it more for 1vs1 or does it also do well in a all vs all Szenario? - Well EDH is more a multiplayer than a 1 v 1 format, so the aim was to build a cEDH deck for multiplayer games. For example the deovtion combo with Gary works way better in a multiplayer game than in a 1 v 1. In a multiplayer game you don't need much interaction because your enemies will also interact and remove big threats. Especially in cEDH it can be helpful do be just the mono black guy and see how the others fight while you can easily explode if they offguard. Neverthless this deck can also played easily in a 1 v 1. It don't have a lot of interactions but enough for an 1 v 1 and also the aim is to be faster and be more resilent than interactive. As every 1 v 1 the power of this deck depends on the enemy. If you are playing against a hard counter deck like Lavinia, Azorius Renegade, then you wont have much fun tbh.

Do you feel it lacks compared to more colors in power? - Sometimes I wish I could remove some annoying artifacts or counter some stuff, but most of the time I don't care because I actually just need 1-3 lands and can finish off the game. The lack of colors is not the main problem, the main problem is that everyone will focus your K'rrik because he is absurdly strong and absolutely important for this deck. Playing mono color is also a blessing, you don't need tons of staples for each color, you don't need fixing and for K'rrik you don't even need black color just life :-).

And do you think I could also make it work in a little bit more Budget variant? - Of course! I already have a budget section on my primer.  I can add more cards to the section so that you have an overview of how you can build the deck in a cheaper variant. that takes some speed and power out of the deck but in a budget environment that shouldn't be a problem at all. I'm also testing a version of this deck without doomsday, if you are interested just check this deck as well https://deckstats.net/decks/118014/2296400-test-cedh-k-rrik-the-sleeper-a/de

Hi,
I build a new tovolar deck so I hope there will be some good werwolves in this set too. I mean we got some vampires in midnight hunt so why not some wolfies in crimson vow.

The invitation letter was with an M and a V so maybe Markov and Voldaren? Not sure about that wedding thing but maybe Edgar and Olivia? I saw the theme booster pack and there was a white haired guy on it who looks like edgar.

I would like to see Runo Stromkirk as the last Vampire Lord from Innistrad, we already have Anje, Olivia and Edgar so now is the best time to add Runo.

And yeah some nice vampires for my Markov deck would be nice.

I also expect a Sorin and Olivia. Maybe another Teferi? because why not we don't have enough teferis :-D

Hi everyone,
I did a primer for my Atraxa - Superfriends deck, which I'm playing for 2 years now.
There are many ways to play this deck and there are many Planeswalker to use in this deck. But after two years I think that I tried most of them and find the best for my own strategy.

I look forward to your suggestions and constructive criticism.

Cool! Yes, DotD is better for sure, I was just suggesting Persist in case you wanted one more reanimation spell :)

Yeah it is a good recommendation. I'll test and if I need more reanimation spells, I'll try persist. I just don´t like the restriction "non legendary" but have to test it first.

I think Dance of the Dead is stronger in your deck. Maybe you could also consider Persist ?

Yeah I think I´ll play dance of the dead. Persist is a nice idea but I think the other reanimation spells are still stronger.

I also updated the primer :-)

Yeah, sorry for not being more specific. I just wanted to point out that ballista + mikaeus on itself won't do much.

No worries, I thought you are talking about a specific combo within the primer, so I was a bit confused and tried to explain :-)
But yeah Ballista + Mikaeus on itself won't do much you are right
