Commander Deck Reviews / Gargos, Hyrda King

Gargos, Hyrda King

I have added the tokens to the token list, but I also added some Maybe-board cards to the list. These are not here to really be upgrades (Minus the Ulvenwlad Oddity, Cultivator Colossus, and Abundance). they are here to be more of a paradigm shift for the deck.

In its current form the deck likes to run by slapping down as many hydras as you can. Build an imposing board presence that kind of makes a target on you but also makes players want to avoid hitting you or angering your and the multiheaded hoard you have amassed by turn 4. Only for them to be alpha struck by a X = 10+ Finale of Devastation into a Craterhoof. (Last nights game after Broodmaster went monstrous).

The shift is to add more targeting spells that capitalize off of the second ability the Watcher has, which is angrily slapping the shit out of all the other creatures because you gave the team a few gifts. Personally, I prefer making a hoard and hitting hard, some people might prefer the pissed off parent approach. Either way, here is Gargos, the Vicious Watcher. Soon to be upgraded with the Ulvenwald Oddity, Cultivator Colossus, and Abundance. (do not ask me what I'm cutting... I am not sure yet.)

I have Squandered Resources, The Meathook Massacre, and Skirge Familiar chilling in the maybe board.

I am not sure what I would cut for them. I just know that there are times that you could really utilize the Familiar and Squandered to push yourself to a possible win.

Massacre can be used for that sudden win con. You just create a ton of tokens, drop the Meathook and capitalize.

Thanks Kaba haha, I will let you know how it plays this weekend, the last of the cards arrive tomorrow. I am excited to play it ^_^.
I enjoy decks that kind of make you have to think, that do not really play themselves. I feel like this will be like that with a little chaos in the mix.

OLD Description

This is a pretty simple deck to understand; it is a heavy combo based deck. It utilizes a couple combos that are accessible in the colors of Blue, White, and Red. So if you are into the control aspect of White and Blue but the Combo Aspect of Red and Blue, then this Jeskai deck is just for you.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

 ﴾Combos﴿

First: Kykar, Wind's Fury + Retraction Helix / Banishing Knack + Jeskai Ascendancy + Mox Amber 🠊 Infinite Mana and Infinite Spirits.

Second: Teferi, Time Raveler + Knowledge Pool 🠊 A pretty hard lock on your opponents. They can only cast at Sorcery Speed, but Knowledge Pool will supersede that making casting illegal thus preventing them from casting anything.

Third: Narset, Parter of Veils + Teferi's Puzzle Box 🠊 We all remember Leovold, Emissary of Trest right? Well Narset Box is the same combo. They will draw for turn, then place the hand on the bottom in a random order and draw no other cards.

Fourth: Ral, Storm Conduit + Doublecast + Expansion // Explosion / Increasing Vengeance / Narset’s Reversal 🠊 Infinite damage from Ral to everyone. Basically, -2 Ral, cast doublecast, Ral's ability will copy it. Let that copy resolve, then cast any copy spell targeting the original doublecast while it is on the stack. From here on you will copy the copy spell with the copy of the copy spell, got that? Doing so gives you infinite copies, with Ral -- infinite damage.

Fifth: Nadir Kraken + Mentor of the Meek + Ashnod’s Altar 🠊 This little gem was brought to my attention by https://commandbeacon.com/. This functions with stack play and trigger responses. When you draw a card, you make a Tentacle Token. The 1/1 token will put Mentor on the stack, respond to that by sacrificing the token to the Altar adding 2 colorless mana. Pay for mentor’s trigger allowing you to draw another card. This will add a Nadir trigger to the stack, pay for it with the last colorless mana remaining, this makes another 1/1 Tentacle Token. Thus looping the cycle.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

 ﴾Win Conditions﴿

The deck has a couple of win conditions.

🕂Impact Tremors with the First Combo will kill all the opponents. You could replace Impact Tremors with Purphoros, God of the Forge for a slightly harder to remove enchantment that deals more damage on Creature ETB.

🕂The Second and third combo are hard locks on the game. The third being the easiest to break, but if they do resolve chances are you have won the game due to the “Scoop Phenomenon.”

🕂The First combo nets you infinite mana. Jaya’s Immolating Inferno, Comet Storm, Expansion // Explosion are some [X] spells that can kill all or most of all the opponents.

🕂The Fifth combo allows you to draw your entire deck. This works using only a single generic mana. If you hold up 2 Blue Mana, after you draw your deck you can cast Thassa’s Oracle after you draw your final card. Winning from the ETB of the oracle.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

 ﴾What It Wants To Do﴿

In the simplest form from this deck, it wants to win with a combo of cards that the opponents have a hard time stopping. In a complicated form, It wants to control the board in the aspect of removing opposition and count away anything else that you cannot deal with on the board. All while trying to lay out the foundation of a lock or a combo before your opponents know what is happening. There is a wealth of counters and removal spells in here to reflect that. It is also a little complicated in some of the combos that it utilizes. Tutor up your answers with several different tutors from the library and some that recur them from your graveyard.

Deck Comments / Re: Yawgmoth, The Infinite - Comments

UPDATE:8/16/2019 (This is outdated but to save the information I will be posting it here)

Yawgmoth has been updated and name changed.

Name: Yawgmoth, Death Disease, and Friends -> Yawgmoth, The Infinite

Cards Cut:
Plague Myr
Endling
Bog Witch
Archfiend of Ifnir
Grave Pact (Will be replaced by K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth)
Glistening Oil
Unearth

Cards Added:
Shadows of the Past
Scheming Symmetry
Reanimate
Sifter of Skulls
Sightless Ghoul
K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth (will Replace Gravepact)
Desecrated Tomb

Reasons: I made these changes because I found that using 2 Undying Creatures is fine, but difficult. When I played a Pawn of Ulamog however, no one batted an eye and then suddenly I play an undying creature the next turn, and proceed to win with infinite sacrifices. So adding a few more means to generate tokens or sacraficial lambs have been added, Sifter and Tomb were added for that reason. S.Ghoul was added to replace Endling, Undying being static and not activated is much better. Reanimate to replace Unearth for just better recursion. I also added Shadows of the Past, when a creature dies Scry 1, that is just too good not to have for 2 mana, if you do not have a way to keep cycling your creatures that die, or say you have Butcher Ghoul and Gravecrawler, this will allow you a way to dig 2 cards deep, Scry before you draw, and if it is not a way to win, bottom it and draw.

once K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth is released this friday, I will be adding him to the deck replacing Gravepact.

Happy hunting

Well COVID kind of hit hard and knocked me out of commander for a hot min. Most LGS's near me were not allowing any instore play and my friends and I had to retract to the lives of hermits.

But we are back now and with the new sets that have come out in the last year to year and a half. I took a quick look and I decided that I should hit up my old favorite.

I have made a Pir and Toothy 4.0, a more focused version of the deck with a slightly honed edge. It still has much room for improvement, but the way it is now is fine for me.

Enjoy everyone

Well, played the first game with this deck in a while. Started playing it again mostly due in part to the revamp of the deck as a whole.

Got two games in, got to the LGS late, and went 1-0-1. Game one: the deck was getting its real shuffle after being sorted out to type, color, and cmc. I kept a pretty poor hand to gauge just how... Bad it could be. It wasn't totally terrible however, it lost to a Grumgully, the Generous Persist Combo deck haha. Game two: this was a gauntlet, 2 hours, Izzet Mixzzix, Simic Tishana, Abzan Afenza, and Jeskai Kykar. The Izzet play countered anything and everything, but that caused hate towards them. This offered an opening, when there was no mana up between Simic and Izzet, I was able to Reversal a X=7 blue sun's zenith and get a new grip, roll into an emergency powers and windmill slam an Ugin, the ineffible. Not before playing a mentor of the meek, this allowed me to plus Uggy and Trigger the Meek for 3 cards digging. This also happened after I bombed a overloaded rift. This quickly lead to a Kraken Meek Altar combo with Thassa's Oracle.

All in all I am happy with the changes, but I do intend on removing Spirit Bond. Going to review some cards and think about something to add to replace it.
